New Web Hosting Show Theme Suggestions?

images I have been looking for a new theme to use for my podcast, the Web Hosting Show.   I have been using the same awesome theme (which I still have much love for) but after so many years, I am getting the itch to try something new.  Really want something with a little less techno beat and something more “rock” related.  Think I have narrowed it down to these two choices:

Which one do you like more?  Found them both at PremiumBeat.com, which I am really looking forward to seeing how well working with them will be.  Thus far, for the budget podcaster - they seem to have the cheapest deals for royalty free music.

Bored? Try Your Hand at Scribbls!

Have a little too much time on your hands this weekend?  I’ve got a web site that is filled to the brim with silliness that I think anybody could get a kick out of.  The Web site is Scribbls, and the purpose is to help put together two other drawing to make a new one.

here are a couple of examples:

bread-october

 platypus

Just as fair warning, some of the combinations get rather adult in nature - but it is all in good fun from what I can see thus far.  As with anything else these days, you can also vote for the best ones too - just in case your not feeling very artistic.  If anything can be said about Scribbls is that it is unique, which is hard to find these days.

Top Host Deals = hosting + digg?

Top Host Deals

So will Top Host Deals become the digg of the web hosting world? Well there is a little ‘bit of competition out there in the market - ok, by competition I mean one other hosting deal social site Hostigg.com.

Top Host Deals looks nice and look as if it hit all the major high points to be a leader in this area of the web. You have the highest voted hosting deals. You have upcoming or just submitted deals. You have categories to help you trim down your search.

Now that Top Host Deals is out of the gate, I will be interested in seeing what they do to separate themselves from the crowd.

Don’t Write for Popularity

It seems like these days when I go check out my feed reader to do some reading from my favorite news sources and blogs - there are a lot of posts you can spot that were written just for the sake of trying to bait the social bookmarking and ranking sites for popularity’s sake.

I am not sure this is the best writing practice. Why? Well after you get success with it once, you try it again and again. After a while, all you have left are a lot of wasted hours that you could have spent doing something more creative.

Sure it seems like a lot of these links that you see on digg, delicious, and others seem to come with a pre-packaged and sure fire way to make it to the top. There is a lot to be said for creativity as well though. Just because you wrote one “top 50 Firefox extensions you can use under water” post does not mean that every top 50 post you write will be just as popular.

You also need to worry about offending your current audience as well. New readers are grand, but if you can’t keep them they might start to look elsewhere. Take for example Mashable.com.

I used to really love reading Pete’s web site but the last few weeks it has been nothing but top ten, twenty and thirty lists. I am sure he’s gotten a lot of incoming links from the social bookmarking places but as a reader - I am bored, and I am sure I am not alone.

So don’t write to become popular - become popular because of what you write.

XXX Domains Get Voted Down Again

The one story that always seems to come back to me is the triple X domain name struggle. If I am not mistaken, I think I talked about it on the first episode of the Web Hosting Show podcast and that was over two years ago. I do believe that it was first introduced in around the year 2000.

Why can’t we just give it up already? Here is some more information about the ruling from the Domain Tools blog.

Advanced word at the ICANN meeting tonight in Lisbon just came in. I understand that the board has voted down the Dot XXX proposal tonight. The board decided behind closed doors that the new TLD should not be added to the Internet root. It is a long standing tradition at ICANN to have the secret board meeting the night before the official board meeting.

If this ever goes through (which I can almost promise you it will not) it isn’t going to make your Internet safer. It isn’t going to keep all the adult Web sites under one roof. The only thing it will do is make the rich richer. You have to bet they are already making deals for the best .xxx domains and they will be going for top dollar.

Sure you could block the .xxx domain and filter out all that new porn. The old porn is going to stay where it is at though. No successful site is going to want to change their domain name, that is Web suicide. If the US government tries to make them do it, they will just base themselves out of a different country where we can not reach them.

So in turn, instead of creating an easier way to filter porn, we are actually creating more porn on the Web. Dot XXX is not the best idea in the world.
