What to do When You Find Yourself Getting Popular

firefox-facts-stats

Looks like my post-Firefox 3 bump in stats is starting to come to an end for Firefox Facts.   While the madness was going on (one post got up to 80+ comments!) I came up with a few tactics to try to milk the proverbial press cow as long as I could.

Watch where people are coming in.  Via Google Analytics I was able to check out in nearly real time where people were coming in via search, blogs and other places and edit my content to meet the needs of the people.

Keep an eye on search phrases and the results they get.  For example, if a lot of people were coming in for the phrase “firefox 3 themes” and the story they were getting was about the themes but didn’t give them much selection, I made sure I added a link to a post like this one that gave some new Firefox 3 ready themes for them to try.

Just some handy advice you might keep in mind for yourself next time you see your own web site going through a popularity surge.

Easily Add Related Posts to WordPress Install?

best-related-posts The WordPress Related Posts plugin might be the best of the bunch.  I have added this to a few of my various projects and online homes and I have to say I am really impressed that all you do is pretty much install, fill in some options and you are done.

Once activated, this plugin will automatically slip related links after all of your stories, articles and posts on your WordPress powered blog.

To your right here you can see what the admin interface looks like for the plugin.  Pretty simple stuff.  If you wish it will also add related posts to your RSS feed too.

If you want a simple way to keep people on your web site a little longer - related links to other stories they might be interested in is one of the best ways to do it.  This WordPress Releated Posts plugin is hands down the easiest of the many out there that do this sort of thing to get up and running.  On the web page for it, it says it is only for WordPress 2.3, but it has given me no problems at all on WordPress 2.5.

Marketing Tip - Plug Yourself. Love Yourself.

If you have several mildly successful Web sites, how can you gain even more attention and readers without doing much work? Well, one technique I have been doing since day one is self promotion. Think of it as loving yourself when nobody else wants to do so.

Learn to Love Yourself

Now we all put links back to our own Web sites and projects. There is nothing new or different about that advice. If you have several dynamic Web sites though, you can plug links in that will lead to real content and not just give you another link or two. Let me explain.

Love YourselfThanks to a few WordPress plugins here and there, I have at the bottom of my three major Web sites links where you can find “other work” I have done. So if somebody was reading this for an example and thought, “Damn that Mitch is pretty cool, where can I find more of his work?” they have it right there for them.

Thanks to that and to me linking to my other projects - I bring more links into myself than anybody else on the Web. In a way, I guess you could think of me as my own little “network” of Web sites with each one promoting the next one in the circle.

No Super Tool To Help You Here

There is no special extension or super plugin that will help you make this happen. You just have to use a little imagination and the tools that are available to you. Remember you are giving your visitors just a little more content - not an advertisement.
