WordPress 2.1 Upgrade Done

Well I made the leap and upgraded all my Web sites to WordPress 2.1 last night. I figured I might as well bite the bullet now instead of putting it off again and again.

Now it isn’t that the process is hard, it is just updating it on six or seven different Web sites can really become a boring and tedious task. I have to say I am really impressed with the final result. All of my Web sites seem to be zipping along a lot faster now.

Time hasn’t been on my side to check out all the neat new features, but so far I like what I see.

Before you get started upgrading your own Web sites, you might want to check out the plugin compatibility page over at the WordPress.org Web site. (thanks Kyle for the heads up on that) Luck was on my side, because I only had one plugin that didn’t work. After upgrading it – post upgrading WordPress, everything was back to normal.

Update – Well I might have spoken too soon, now it seems like I have a problem with disappearing tags. I have updated the version of Jerome’s Keywords plugin (and got rid of the tags in the head plugin) I was using and that might have fixed it. Give me a heads up if you notice any tags doing wonky stuff.

Update 2 – No such luck – just happened again on Firefox Facts when I approved a comment. Grrr…

Last Update – Well I upgraded all my Web sites to Ultimate Tag Warrior and things seem to be smooth again. Hope it lasts!

Google Reader Guide Updated

My Google Reader Tools and Guide has been updated again. I am going to try my best to keep it as updated as I can – or for as long as people are interested in it.

If you have any other suggestions for it, please let me know.

I have had fun collecting all these links, tips and tweaks from all around the Web – and I hope you have been enjoying checking them all out as well.

This might be the most popular topic I have covered via this Web site in a very long time. You know me though – always happy to help!

Where is the Web Hosting News?

My only major complaint with the Web hosting news industry is that there isn’t one. Almost every single big source of news inside of the Web hosting industry is nothing more than a press release dump. Now I have some good friends that write these press releases, so this is nothing against them. They are playing the game along with the rest of us.

I would like to see a source come out that did real Web hosting news though and didn’t just cut and paste press releases and call it news.

I want to see people doing investigations, research and putting together facts and information. Looking around the wild and wacky world of Web hosting, these places are few and far between. Why? It is too hard, that’s why. It is cheaper to pay one guy to sit there and cut and paste than it is to hire a team of writers who can give us something a little more than just the “company line”.

So where are the real Web hosting news Web sites?

Opera Cries, Firefox Parties, IE Sucks

Well the browser wars are heating up, so I thought I would give you a little inside information from the front lines of the war.

On the Opera front, they are still being cry babies:

It doesn’t make sense to Lie. “IE 7 comes out and adds tabbed browsing, but Opera has had that for 10 years.” He agreed that ideas should be shared — in fact, said Lie, Opera cooperates with both Mozilla and Apple, which develops its own Safari browser — but he’d like his company to get credit where credit is due.

“Credit is due Opera, and we’d like to see that reflected in market share,” Lie said.

Oh cry me a river!

Opera might have invented the browser tab, but Mozilla perfected it. Want proof? If they hadn’t, my other Web site (and eBook) would have been called Opera Facts.

Internet Explorer 7 launched today as well – and then fell flat on its face again. It is nice to see that Microsoft isn’t feeling the preassure to rise above any occasion.

A vulnerability has been discovered in Internet Explorer, which can be exploited by malicious people to disclose potentially sensitive information. The vulnerability is caused due to an error in the handling of redirections for URLs with the “mhtml:” URI handler. This can be exploited to access documents served from another web site.

Yes, that is correct. You upgraded to get a security threat. Yippee!

Now Firefox 2 seems to be the only browser that is having any success as of late. They are too busy planning celebration parties to care about what the other two browsers out there are doing.

There are now more than 300 parties registered worldwide!!! If you haven’t signed up to host or attend a Firefox 2 release party, head over to the Firefox Party Tool and do it today. We’ve also got Party Shirts! in the US Mozilla store. We’ll get them up at the international store ASAP. This is a limited run, only 1,000 shirts, and we’re selling them below cost, so get ‘em before they’re gone.

So there you have it, the latest news from the war on browsers. Who’s side are you going to stand with?

Another Year Older

Tomorrow is my 24th Birthday. :) So am I happy after 24 years? Yeah, I think I am pretty pleased with myself. I figured this would be as good of a time as any to go through some of my projects as of late.

Mitchelaneous
This blog has seen a lot of change here recently. If you haven’t visited it in a while, please do so because I spent the last few days changing the styles around a little ‘bit. I like the much “cleaner” interface much more than the old one. Give me your feedback and thoughts.

Firefox Facts
Well I am happy to say that we are less than 1,000 downloads away from the Firefox Facts eBook hitting the 20,000 downloads mark. Once again I’d like to thank Lockergnome for setting this whole project into motion for me.

I’d also like to thank each and every one of you for downloading it this many times. So tell your neighbor, tell your family, tell your dog to go download the best free eBook on Mozilla Firefox and lets get that download number even higher!

The Web Hosting Show
My podcast is going good as well, which is nothing new. I just posted my 80th official edition of the show, but I have recorded and posted more than 100 audio segments to the Web site over this “almost” two year period.

So many other podcasts have gone by the wayside, and I still claim that I am the number one Web hosting podcast out there today.

Hosting Hoopla
The Web’s only Web hosting news and link reader hasn’t seen many updates as of late, due to other projects coming first. I have had some talks about selling it to the highest bidder as well. If you are interested, shoot me over a line and we will talk.

MitchKeeler.com
OK, so there hasn’t been any real update here. Just a few weeks ago I installed WordPress here, did some editing to the template files, and now have WordPress running my static Web site. I would post how I did it, but it involved a lot of, “Does this work? No… How about this?”. I don’t think that would be traffic driving content.

Now on top of all that, I am also working as a moderator for Lunarpages and Web Hosting Chat. I also have a few contributing writer credits at both Lockergnome and the Web hosting magazine, Ping! Zine. So as you can see, I am more than able to stay busy at my new “old” age.

Hosting Hoopla – Simple View

shoop.gifWell here is another feature to Hosting Hoopla that I have been working on for a while now. Some people E-mailed me and told me that Hosting Hoopla was too complicated. I can see where they might be coming from with that, so I have created Simple Hoopla!

This new view will give you a single column aggregated resource of the latest Web hosting news and links from a variety of different Web sites. This time though they are all blended together.

As usual, I’ll proably get ignored by the big Web 2.0 blog watchers – but as long as I made a few folks happy, that is good enough for me.

The New Hosting Hoopla

Alright, my renovations of Hosting Hoopla are now done!

I hope everybody enjoys the new look and in time, I’ll be organizing a little more of the backend and adding some new neat features to the Web site. This was a Web site I started for myself more than anybody else. I needed a place to gather all the Web hosting information I could for producing the Web Hosting Show. Now that it is done and designed, I am excited to share that resource gathering with the rest of you out there.

The Hosting Hoopla updates RSS feed is working again as well. You can pick that up at:

Feel free to drop me a comment or an E-mail and let me know what you like, what you don’t like and what you would like to see in the future.

Greasemonkey Scripts on Firefox Facts

firefoxlogo.jpgDue to the popularity of Greasemonkey within the Web and myself lately, I have decided to give it a little more coverage here on the Firefox Facts Web site. Along with themes, tips, extensions and links, Greasemonkey deserves a spot here because it does one thing. It makes Firefox better. So watch out for the newest Greasemonkey posts, and if you have any scripts to suggest just send them in to me.

My Deal With Hostaga

Some of you have asked about the new Hostaga image and link on the Web site. Well, since the route of sponsorship (or as I like to call it “supporter”) worked so well for the Web Hosting Show, I figured I would try it out here. I’ve known the owner, Tris, for some time now, and I know he runs a tight ship.

So how has the experiance been so far? I have to say I have been more than impressed. They might be a little smaller than your average Web hosting company, but that isn’t always a bad thing.

So if you are looking for a good Web hosting deal, you might give them a shot.

New Domain, Same Great Mitch Taste

Well I finally pulled the plug on Blogware and moved things over to Mitchelaneous.com. Hopefully I will be able to get all my Blogware stuff canceled soon so I can focus more on creating content and less on managing the backend. Blogware hasn’t been too bad of a service, I think I just out grew them. I needed more and they just couldn’t get it to me.

My RSS feed will stay the same, only the main URL is changing here. So make sure you update your bookmarks to my new blogging home Mitchelaneous.com. Leave me a comment and tell me what you think!
