Modules in Drupal let you extend, build and customize the core functionality of this content management system powerhouse. Chances are if there is something you would like to do with Drupal, somebody out there has written an add-on for it. If not, it is pretty simple to dive in and write your own. Here are 5 of the most installed Drupal modules out there in the wild today.

Views

This tool is essentially a smart query builder that, given enough information, can build the proper query, execute it, and display the results. It has four modes, plus a special mode, and provides an impressive amount of functionality from these modes.

Token

Tokens are small bits of text that can be placed into larger documents via simple placeholders, like %site-name or [user]. The Token module provides a central API for modules to use these tokens, and expose their own token values.

Pathauto

The Pathauto module automatically generates path aliases for various kinds of content (nodes, categories, users) without requiring the user to manually specify the path alias. This allows you to get aliases like /category/my-node-title.html instead of /node/123. The aliases are based upon a “pattern” system which the administrator can control.

FileField

FileField provides a universal file upload field for CCK. It is a robust alternative to core’s Upload module and an absolute must for users uploading a large number of files. Great for managing video and audio files for podcasts on your own site.

Administration Menu

The module renders all administrative menu items below ‘administer’ in a clean, attractive and purely CSS-based menu at the top of your website. It contains not only regular menu items – local tasks are also included, giving you extremely fast access to any administrative resource and function your Drupal installation provides.

Drupal is a slick and very extendable content management system worth checking into. These modules show that Drupal may even be one of the easiest CMS scripts out there to hack around with to get the website you really need. To learn more about Drupal, be sure to check out Drupal is the Best CMS You Never Used.

Looking for a great photo album organizer to put on your website or to base your website on? Gallery is a great open source script that will let you get that job done. It looks great as a stand alone website, and it also blends in seamlessly into your current website design too.

Here are some of my favorite features that come with Gallery:

Auto Rotate Images – Gallery can look at information in pictures from digital cameras and automatically rotate them as needed.

Image Quality and Size Defaults – You can limit the quality and size of images so that when images are uploaded, Gallery will resize them to save space.

Main Gallery Page Settings – The configuration wizard contains all of the settings for how the main Gallery page looks and acts including showing or hiding the album tree, search engine, or album owner, and what frames to show around albums.

Email Support – Set up email support to have your Gallery email users when their accounts are created or when they forget their password, email you copies, email people when the Gallery is updated, and more!

Gallery-wide Slideshow – enable or disable a slideshow that includes all pictures in the gallery

Commenting – turn off or on the public commenting system and configure it.

Logging – enable logging with syslog or the Windows logger

RSS publishing – publish your Gallery with RSS!

Album Defaults – set defaults for the way that all new albums will originally look

If you would rather host your photos on your own hosting account, rather than relying on one of the free album hosting services out there, Gallery is a great choice. When it comes to customizing the script, you can do so by creating or using a theme. There are many free ones to download or you can tweak the CSS to make the page display you want to.

With Gallery, you are in control. You can download it, and test it out for free on your own hosting account from gallery.menalto.com.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Mitchelaneous Facebook Fan Page!

Check your website’s social ranking status with Siteholic. This neat tool will give you a lot of details concerning your domain’s age, Google PageRank and other search engine and social network ranking statistics you need to keep track of. The best thing about it is, it keeps all these details, all in one location, on one very simple page.

Now, I love to keep tabs on all the statistics of my websites – this way I know what I might need to improve, where I am doing good, and site building techniques I might not have thought about before. Some of the details Siteholic provides to you about any domain include:

Domain’s Age

Google Backlinks

Google Indexed Pages

Bing Indexed Pages

Site Value

Digg Links

Google Bot Last Visit

and much more!

Here are a few more details about the tool from the developer:

Having a website with good content does not get you results. The next step is getting your website indexed in various major search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing etc. If your website is not listed and indexed in these search engines, people would never come to know about the existence of your site. Also it is important to know about the social bookmarking and how people are sharing your site.

Get a holistic view of your website ranking and social media presence. Go check out siteholic.com!

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Mitchelaneous Facebook Fan Page!

Now that our marketing month here on Mitchelaneous is close to an end, I bet you are wondering, "How am I suppose to remember when to do all of this stuff?". Well, I think the best route you should take is to create yourself a marketing to-do list calendar – so that this way you can always know what to do today to improve your blog, your brand or your business.

Now first, we have to find you a calendar. You could use a traditional paper calendar, and just jot your notes down on it. Then again, we live in a digital age, so let us turn towards some of the online calendar services.

Online Calendar Suggestions

Here are two of my personal favorites:

Google Calendar

30 Boxes

Both of these great online applications will let you setup reminders and notes for yourself, so that you know what to do on each day of the month. Now, how do you break down the things you need to do? You can get as complex as needed, but here are a few guidelines to help you get started.

Daily Marketing Goals

Look at simple things you can do to help improve the big picture. This might be as simple as contacting a new partner to see if you can get a deal going, or maybe spell checking one page a day.

Weekly Marketing Goals

For your weekly goals, look at tasks that might take longer to get done. Mark down events that could take two or three days, such as a new website launch or a possible landing page redesign. Set a goal for yourself here, but remember to keep it as flexible as you need.

Monthly Marketing Goals

Your monthly goals should be more in sync with "big picture" goals. Did you sell more or less things that you did the month before? What about comparing your stats this month to your stats a year ago to see how you stack up. Give yourself a big monthly goal to work towards – that can be made up of your daily and weekly goals.

It might take a few months to work out, but once you find the right marketing schedule for yourself – you will find you are becoming more productive because you have that list of things to check off for the day, the week and the month ahead.

I spent much of my weekend playing with the beta version of the new Windows Live Writer, and I do have say – they have won me over again. This program is sleek, it gets the job done and really – it is hard to believe that it is put out there by Microsoft for free, because there is no close competitor to Windows Live Writer out there. So lets take a look at why you might want to switch your blog updating to this magnificent tool.

The biggest improvement by far is how they got rid of the sidebar, and moved everything to the top of the program window. I often write with a browser open on the left – and Windows Live Writer open on the right, so I need all the screen real estate I can get. This new look gives me more space to write – and hides more of the features I don’t really need or use.

It supports a number of different blogging platforms – including WordPress, so that is always a positive. Another feature I like is that they moved the tags, categories and set post date all to the top, so it is easier to remember to set them. In the previous versions of Windows Live Writer, these were dumped in on the bottom of the window and often overlooked.

Want to give it a shot? You can download and try out the Windows Live Essentials beta of Windows Live Writer. Just be careful during the install, because it will also ask you if you want a ton of other products you might or might not want to install just yet. I give it two thumbs up, a nice improvement on an already nice blogging program.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Mitchelaneous Facebook Fan Page!

Thanks to Disqus, you can now quickly like or dislike any post that has Disqus as the commenting engine of choice (including all my projects).

These are the kind of surprises I like to wake up to in the morning.

Here is a little more about the feature from the Disqus developers:

This feature continues Disqus’ goal to help pull a true community out of the audience that visits your site. Liking comments has been a core piece of Disqus since the beginning, and we’re now extending this feedback mechanism to the top-level page or article itself. Community Likes is an easy, quick way for your visitors to give feedback and make their presence known on your site, all without having to post an actual comment.

You can read more about this innovation here. Now, sure this might be “borrowed” from Facebook, but it doesn’t mean it isn’t worth using.

I have become a big fan of Disqus for managing the comments across my websites. They have really gone from being a lackluster set of commenting tools to one of the best website add-ons very quickly.

Try it out, and see how you like* it.

* – Pun was fully intended.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Mitchelaneous Facebook Fan Page!

Ever wonder if there was a search engine devoted to just searching Twitter images? Oh there is – and its name is Twtimage. This website is a Twitter photo search engine. It will fetch search results from twitpic, tweetphoto, img.ly and yfrog.com. So, how does it work and is it worth your time?

Well, to start things out we navigate ourselves to the website, and type in a search term. I am going to type in HostingCon 2010, since that happened last week. I am sure somebody had pictures of that, right?

Darn it. Ok, how about we go with that other big convention, ComicCon? Whoo hoo, we have results…

When you click on one of the thumbnailed images in the search results, you are taken to the main page for that image on whatever service it was fetched from.

While it might not be perfect yet – I would definitely say to keep an eye on twtimage.com as I am sure it will only get better from here.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Mitchelaneous Facebook Fan Page!

Need an easier way to find the perfect user name? When looking for a user name, you want one that has not been taken before, and is available via all the popular social networks – and maybe even as a domain name. If you are in search of a helping hand in your search, NameChecklist is the place to check first.

The idea of this online tool is simple enough. You can use the service to check if our brand name, user name, domain and vanity URL are still available across dozens of social network website and the web.

For example, when I typed “funkymonkeymitch” into the search box, and hit the button labeled, “Check”, it showed me that user name is available via:

Twitter

Netlog

Flickr

LinkedIn

Last.fm

Foursquare

Facebook

MySpace

Delicious

JoinedIn

Gowalla

and YouTube

It also check to see that this user name is available to be registered as a .edu, .org, .com, .net, .nl, .be, .de, .fr, .co.uk, or .us domain name. This is handy, because you never know when I might start up funkymonkeymitch.com just for fun.

Last, but not least, it shows you search engine and media results for that user name. You get the number of results in Google, Flickr, YouTube, and Yahoo.

NameChecklist is a great website to keep handy to make sure your brand is setup and registered across all the different social network websites out there, to check for domain name availability, and also to check and see who’s talking about that user name right now. Check it out at namechecklist.com.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Mitchelaneous Facebook Fan Page!

Need a simple way to like this, that or the other via Facebook? FBLiky is that tool. This online tool will let you share your “likes” on Facebook. All you have to do is type in something that you like, and let the website do the work.

So as you have seen in the picture above, I decided to share the fact I like vienna sausages. Once you hit the button labeled, “Publish” you are taken to a page designed specifically for that thing you like.

Now, you can click the “Like” button, to be the first of your friends to like this or leave a comment on the page using the Facebook connect social plugin. I clicked the like button, because I don’t want to seem like a liar or anything. I do love some vienna sausages. So now, back on your Facebook profile you will see this.

There you have it.

If you want to play around with FBLiky and share your own odd tastes in processed meat in a can, point your browser towards fbliky.com.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Mitchelaneous Facebook Fan Page!
