Wallpaper Deal from Vladstudio.com

Right now Vladstudio.com is having a special Valentine’s Day deal. You can just $19.99 (usual price is $29.99) to get a lifetime membership to the site. I have always been a big fan of this site – but didn’t use it much since the free stuff is rather limited.

With a paid membership though you get higher quality wallpaper and the usual watermark is removed. I am a big believer in supporting people who bring you excellent content for almost nothing and with a deal like this, how could you turn it down?

Support Tip: Give Me All The Details!

When asking any business for support, you should make sure you do so by including all the details that might be needed to answer that support request. Sometimes just posting a simple question is not enough and you need to make sure you explain yourself so you can get an answer quicker.

First thing you should do is state your question. Make it short, simple and to the point. You see after this simple step many people stop and just send that in to a support team. That alone is not enough.

You need to include more details about what it is you are asking about, why you think you need it and what it is exactly. The more oddball your question – the more information somebody might need. For example this question here:

Do you support WordPress on your Web hosting accounts? WordPress is a blogging engine that uses PHP, MySQL and more. Here is an example of the specs list needed for hosting it.

Is easier to answer than:

Hi there I want to install a script for something but I need to know if you support my thingies I need for it thanks.

Support professionals in any arena are not mind readers. You have to try to do your best job at layout out the question in a way anybody could understand if you want the quickest results.

Want Help from Your Web Host?

Hosting HelpI’ve worked in Web hosting and customer service for a number years. Over those years, I have noticed a lot of little things that might help you get your issues solved faster and help you build a better relationship with your own hosting support team.

Give me a preview of your issue, question or problem in the title of the E-mail or help desk ticket. Don’t put in “Dude, Site is Lik the BrockeN!”

Make sure you include every bit of information you think might be needed to solve your question. Usually a Web host will let you know what type of verification they need from you for certain things. Provide that stuff first and you’ll take at least one step out of the support process.

Don’t insult your Web host. I don’t care if you had twelve servers and they all just went down and now your in all on the floor crying. Yelling and insulting your Web host is not going to help things any. Take a deep breath and do your best to work with your Web host in getting the issues taken care of. No need to make things more stressful than they already are.

Outsourcing Your Support Needs

Is it a good thing when a Web hosting company starts to get rid of their workers in the United States to replace them with cheaper labor from overseas?

Of course not! I do have some good friends that live overseas and that are in the Web hosting world as well. Those are not the folks I am mad at. I am mad at the big hosting companies tossing perfectly good system admins out on the street and then going to these overseas sweat shops to find a replacement.

Now I don’t think this is as big of a problem as it used to be – but it is still going on. Companies outside of the USA are doing it as well. Computer companies are the worst offenders when it comes to these practices.

Hosting Support

This is the last of my Web hosting comic series for now. If you have enjoyed those that I have posted in the past and this one as well, please let me know. In other words, leave a comment man! I would love to continue if you want me to.

Hosting Support is a Dirty Job

Working any sort of customer support job is hard, but working customer support for a Web host is even harder. Oh you think sitting around and answering people’s questions is an easy job? I would beg to differ and I’ll let you know why on this edition of the Web Hosting Show.

Start With Lunarpages on Monday

hdr_logo.jpgWell, I guess it is about time I said something public about this. After my offer to the world for my “professional services” more than a few folks came out and offered me a job. I have to thank everybody who did so, and I wish I could work for you all. After much debate though, I decided to go with Lunarpages.com. Starting tomorrow, I am going to be working on their forums and doing pre-sales chat for them. I know, it isn’t the biggest job in the world, but I didn’t want too much work. I just wanted a 9 to 5 type job to where I could keep doing my writing, and get some extra cash on the side.

It has been two years since I last worked in this type of job, but I think as soon as I get used to it again, all should be well. Customer support is like riding a bicycle, right?
