Need a Better Game Review?

Video Game Reviews From time to time, I’ll go to the video game review sites like Gamespot and others to see what is new in the world of video games.  Unlike the other areas of tech I seem to be involved in, video games are purely for pleasure and nothing else.

The problem comes in when you want to just get some reviews.  You have to battle through popup ads, pretty graphics and ten page articles.  If you don’t have much time, and you just want to know how good a game it try No Fuss Reviews.

This site will deliver you what you want, need and love most about video game review sites the easy to read thumbs up or thumbs down.  Type in any game title and then the console that it is on and you can get a simple one through ten review of the game.

Another neat feature is, let’s say you don’t know what the title is exactly but you know it is for the Wii and it has "Mario" in the title.  just type in Mario, select Wii on the side and it will give you all the Wii games with Mario in the title.

Netvibes Ginger Has Got it All

netvibes_white I got an invite to Netvibes Ginger release a few days ago, and I have to say after playing with it for a while it is an awesome upgrade to an already awesome start page solution.

There are tons of positives.  The overall loading seems to be faster than the previous version.  Also adding content to the page is a lot easier thanks to the new top dashboard-like area:

The public "Universe" is cool too - as now I can push out my own customized page on Netvibes for the public to see.  To check out the one I created while testing, go to:

Here is another shot of host Netvibes looks with a little personalization and flair added to it.  This shot is very colorful but in all honesty you can customize almost every aspect of how it looks and they even have 2 new themes to use too.

I could only find one negative.  The new social aspects of it, that is the only area where I am not so sure about yet.  Maybe because I don’t have any friends using it yet (might be better to test it with a few good buddies).  Not sure if I want to manage yet another collection of friends.

Final thoughts on Netvibes Ginger is that it is a winner and another nice reason to use Netvibes as one of your start page solutions.  They are really trying to move beyond being just a start page though and are evolving into a place where they hope you will hang your had and stay a while.

CamStudio - Easy Desktop Recording

CamStudioLooking for the perfect way to roll out a few tutorials here and there?

I have looked everywhere at every single product. For the best tools for the cheapest price my personal best find award would go to CamStudio. It is free and gets the job done.

The interface is simple enough for you to master within a few minutes and the number of different projects you could do with this are almost endless.

Personally, I wanted something to do a few quick captures so I could do a few more video tutorials - showing things from my desktop.

Here are a few more details from the developer:

CamStudio is able to record all screen and audio activity on your computer and create industry-standard AVI video files and using its built-in SWF Producer can turn those AVIs into lean, mean, bandwidth-friendly Streaming Flash videos (SWFs)

CamStudio did not let me down. There are a handful of advanced features too - but they really were not needed for what I wanted to do. As long as I can send that avi into a video editing program or upload it to a place like YouTube I am good to go.

Things that Bug Me About Vista

I think the world has seen enough over the top Vista bashing. I did want to share some of my bad experiences for others though. I have to say I am amazed by reading the press that I didn’t have more problems than I did. If you believe what a number of reviewers and tech minds would have to believe you would think that Vista was about as useful to you as a newspaper is to a homeless man in the rain.

User Account Control in Vista is annoying, but not driving me crazy yet.

The only device I had trouble with getting to work with Vista was my old Logitech keyboard. Other than that though, all my other gadgets seem to have worked the first time around.

Had to finally upgrade my old version of NoteTab Pro to the newest version (actually ended up buying NoteTab Std cause it got the job done for me. Read the rest of this entry »

Vista, Quick Thoughts = Not That Bad!

Windows Vista, not that bad?For those of you watching my recent twittering, you probably noticed that I ordered myself a new PC. The one thing that made me really reluctant about moving from my old 3 or 4 year old previous Windows XP machine was Windows Vista. I have heard so many horror stories on the Web how could somebody not be scared?

After spending some time with it last night though I have to say it is not that bad. Sure, there is room for improvement - but think about any previous Windows version. It is never “right” when you pull it out of the box. It takes a lot of tweaking, love, tossing midgets at it and affection before you get it the way you want it to be. Another Social Hosting Site - HostingBookmarks.com

There is another digg clone from the hosting world to look at today. HostingBookmarks.com is the first though to focus more towards hosting news and help rather than hosting deals.

Hosting Bookmarks

I’d like to see them ditch the “this was made with Pligg” stuff - kind of makes a bad first impression. Funny enough though, when you register and login it goes away from public view so maybe it is something they are just not seeing. To be a success it looks like this web site just needs more members.

Submitting a link couldn’t be easier - so that is one positive. Here is an example link I submitted for testing purposes:

http://www.hostingbookmarks.com/WebHostingHelp/The_Web_Hosting_Show/

Overall with a little bigger of a user base and a few tweaks to the interface here and there, Hosting Bookmarks could be an awesome service and tools for finding out what is going on inside the hosting world.

So with Hosting Bookmarks in the mix, that makes three social hosting tools out there to date:

What will be next? I am still sort of surprised that none of the bigger hosting players have jumped into this mix - but then again it is still early in the game.
