Worried about WordPress 2.3?

WordPressOnly thing about using WordPress is if you use it on multiple web sites - it is a ‘bit of a pain to update them all at the same time. Thus far I haven’t had too many issues getting things done. It is just a slow and tedious process to go through. Here are some of the issues I’ve run into. Read the rest of this entry »

My Only Beef With Ubuntu

I have been trying out Ubuntu via Wubi for a while now, and I can honestly say I have only had one big beef with it during my tinkering. There is no good one, two three step process for editing the monitor settings. Now that might be more a problem with my computer than the OS itself - but it has kept me from using Ubuntu full time.

Trying to search around and find a way to edit the brightness and contrast to where things don’t look ultra-bright has been a pain. If that could be made into an easier process - then sure I might give it a permanent chance. Other than that, it does seem to fit all the rest of my needs.

Of course there is probably some Ubuntu gurus out there having a good laugh at the fact I can’t figure this situation out. Afraid this old HP desktop computer though might just not have it in it to go too open source.

Also there are a lot of different Linux flavors I haven’t gotten to try out yet either, so maybe I can find one that fits me just right.

RegisterFly Still Getting Hit

RegisterFly folks, I have an offer for you - but I will leave that for last.

You know you are in a bad spot when you are a domain name register and your Web site is down for any period of time. That is almost as bad as visiting a Web host, seeing it down, and then once it comes back up have a big “99.9% Uptime” logo flashing in your face.

If you want to hear some of my thoughts on what RegisterFly has gone through thus far, I would check out the Web Hosting Show from two weeks ago. The latest ‘bit of news to happen in their recent streak of bad luck is going offline for a little while. You can read all about the technical details at Netcraft. I am not sure if I feel more sorry for the RegisterFly company or the customers of RegisterFly.

Once source of news on this story I have been surprised by is ICANN. I never even knew they had a blog till somebody from the ICANN organization left me a comment yesterday via WebHostingShow.com. It is bookmarked, and is now one of my best friends when it comes to tracking all this RegisterFly trouble.

If anybody from RegisterFly’s side of things wants to have their side of the story told, I am offering you an open spot to do it on the Web Hosting Show podcast - the number one hosting podcast out there today. There is an open door for them to send me any audio statement they wish to send and I will play it for the world to hear. Now the only question is, will they take me up on it?

Grid Server Outage at Media Temple

I hate to be the one to tell you that I told you so, but I did. According the Netcraft:

Customers of MediaTemple’s GridServer, which received widespread attention upon its debut last month, experienced significant downtime Tuesday. GridServer is among the many cluster-based grid hosting services, offering the promise of enterprise-level reliability and scalability in an affordable web hosting plan.

Now that I got the “I told you so” out of the way, let me say something in the defense of Media Temple.

Bad things happen, no matter who your Web host is.

Media Temple’s advantage is also it’s disadvantage. They are host to a lot of popular blogs out there, so when things are good they get praise ten times more than anybody else. When things go back - the same thing happens in the negative sense.
