Where Are You in the Green Hosting Debate?

green-hosting-debate I’ve got a lot of positive and negative feedback on this week’s edition of the Web Hosting Show podcast.  The most interesting of the bunch is the debate over how usual “green” hosting really is.  I know some hosts out there really want to do better by the environment, and feel like this is helping.  After reviewing all the facts though I still feel like it is a three card monte-like scam.  Here is a view from the other side of the fence from Jen L, one of the debaters…

We do it, and if it’s a scam, then so is my electric company regulated and overseen by the government.

At my home, I have the option to pay a premium for renewable energy, and I have lots of official stuff on my bill showing the higher price I pay with the guarantees that money got fed into the grid. My electric company releases the energy I pay for into the grid – they have to, or its illegal. Are the zaps coming into my house guaranteed to be clean?

No. Energy delivery is communal – but the higher premium I pay puts more clean energy into the grid that would not otherwise get there. If enough people chose to pay for the higher premium, a higher percentage of energy in the grid would be renewable. Does it come with the same ego boost as solar panels on the top of my house? No. Does it ensure that less pollution comes from me because I pay more than everyone else? Yes. It makes a difference.

It’s the same concept. Green Tags enable people that want to buy renewable energy but who don’t have it directly available to them to do so. If *everyone* did it no matter where they were, we could all be green in a short amount of time.

If you wonder if its a scam, ask to see the certificates that were issued (as we all get certificates saying precisely what we bought), and the report as to how they arrived at how much to offset. If they can’t give it to you, then yes, possibly, it’s a scam.

If they *can*, the place you are hosting is paying for their energy *twice*, once to keep the power on, and again in the same amount to feed that energy they used back into the grid as green energy so someone else doesn’t have to use dirty energy.

How someone voluntarily choosing to pay for their electricity twice can be considered “a scam” is beyond me.

Check out podcast 151 for yourself and join the debate.  Is green hosting good or just another sales gimmick to get you in the door?

Best of the Flash Video Players

A few months back I did a round up of some of my favorite flash podcast players that are out there, but then I got people asking about the video podcasters out there.  What type of tools could they use other than going with a YouTube, Revver or another Online service?  Thanks to these downloads, you can get your own flash video player going for a relatively cheap price.

Flowplayer might be my favorite of the free flash video players out there.  It has multiple color schemes and skins you can use, as well as being lightweight and not overly obnoxious with the basic design.  If you want to upgrade you could also pick up the commercial license which would allow you to remove the Flowplayer logo when maximized, bug fixes and one month of support via e-mail.

Flowplayer Video Player

JW FLV Media Player is another one you should check out if your looking for your own emendable flash video player.   It supports flv, mp3, h264, swf and more.  Also included is streaming support, RSS, play lists and accessibility features too.  Released under Creative Commons, it too is totally free to use too.

JW FLV Media Player

Wimpy Wasp is not a free download to try, but it is worth checking out.  This product too allows you to play flash video on your site by plugging and playing with the flash video player.  Makes the process of putting your own flash player out there a lot easier.  While you are on their site, you might also check out the Wimpy AV Player too.

Wimpy Wasp Video Player

Willing to pay for your player?  You can also get a lot of other flash video player projects over at FlashDen.  You may have to pay a little but they have a slew of downloads to browse through to see if they will fit into your current project or web site.  Have another favorite, let me know and leave a comment.

The Hosting Guide eBook?

I have another sub-project under wraps for right now, but I’d like to explain things a ‘bit so I can get some feedback from you.

I have had the idea for some time now to wrap up some of the full length guides (maybe four or five of them) from the Web Hosting Show podcast, and turn them into a short eBook.  Then, when you are downloading – you could pick up the eBook to read or you could have the option to go listen to that “chapter” via the past podcast.

Then later on down the road, if this project is a success I would like to do a few volumes of the same, maybe after four or five guides later on.  My outlook on this is I’d like to help and get the help in the hands of those who need it in anyway that I can.  Since another eBook as been “in the cards” for me for a while, figured this might be the best of both worlds.

Voice Training Tips for Podcasters

I have more talent in my big toe...

Searching the Web for ways to make myself sound better when recording I ran into a lot of voice training tips for speaking and singing. Funny enough, some of the singing ones work too to help you sound better when recording a podcast (such as the Web Hosting Show).

Here are a few of my favorites:

Yawn three times before you start talking. Now I am sure there is some science behind this I don’t understand. I do have to say though it helps a lot, especially if you think you sound a ‘bit nasally when you record your voice (think Fran Drescher).

Hum to yourself for a few minutes, without having your top teeth touching your bottom teeth. Try going up and down in pitch and see if you can find the right tone for your voice that way. Try to stay natural though, or you’ll sound like your doing a bad Barry White impression.

Last voice training tip that I think a lot of people would get use out of would be to practice. Record yourself talking and see what you like or don’t like. Maybe you need to speak a little lower? Maybe you need to speak a little louder? Maybe you need to speak a little slower? Any long time listeners to my podcast can tell you I can get easily excitable – but I have been trying to do a better job at telling myself inside my head to sloow dooowwwn.

3 Years of Podcasting

This week marks the 3rd birthday of the Web Hosting Show podcast. Three years later and 143+ podcasts recorded, I think we are still going strong and thankfully can continue to say we are the number one web hosting podcast out there today and the one and only voice of the web hosting world.

Here is a little more of what to look forward to on episode 143:

It is not only my birthday, but it is your birthday too. The Web Hosting Show has been rocking the web hosting industry for three year now, and hopefully for many more years to come. No surprises, no special guests no fluff will be here today though. I am just going to do my job and give you a grade A podcast you will soon not forget.

Thanks to one and all that have helped make the Web Hosting Show a winner.

Basic Podcast Tips from a Hosting Media Rock Star

Sony Headphones SuckThe end of the month will be the Web Hosting Show’s third year of production. Hard for me to believe that hundreds of people have been tuning into me week after week, but I appreciate any and all of them more than they would ever know. To do my best to pay something back to the community I thought I would share some of the podcasting tips I have picked up on over the past three years so maybe you can get your own audio podcast project off the ground.

Try moving the mic around!

That is the number one audio recording tip I would give anybody. You would be amazed how differently you can sound depending on where the mic is. Most will tell you to put it under your chin so you don’t “pop your p’s” but for me, I like to keep it at a distracting eye level (that is with a headset mic).

Move in a little closer…

You don’t want to sound like you are in an empty room, echoing around – unless you are pretending to be the booming voice of god in your audio podcast. Make sure your close enough to the mic to where you don’t sound too loud but your not sounding too far into the background either. This will take some time to find the exact spot that is right for you.

Try to speak from the heart!

Having a guide or show notes is good for a base, but don’t be afraid to go off on your own. Often times I’ll pre-write my show notes and as I record get off when I had wrote down. Why? Well after hearing it out loud I think to myself, “Well it would be better if I go off in this direction instead”. Then I’ll update my notes later to reflect that.

Stick yourself in the Cone of Silence?

Try your best to eliminate any and all background noises. That means if you have a loud heater in the winter months, turn it off to record. If your air conditioner’s buzz is being caught by your mic, turn it off in the summer months. Suffer for your art so your listeners aren’t left wondering – what was that noise I just heard?

The last ‘bit of advice I would have for you is have fun! Don’t think of your show, audio recording or any other side project like this as a job. Treat it like a hobby. Audio podcasting might not be for everybody, but there is no way to find out if you like it unless you try. As long as you try to have fun with it, your listeners will pick up on that positive energy and will tune in again to hear more.

Hosting Debate Over 10 Terabyte Deal

It has been fun the past few days watching the debate on the Web Hosting Show about fxts.net and a segment I did talking about their “promise” to give their clients 10 terabyes of disk space. Well, I give Daniel – the guy in charge over there a lot of credit because he has defended himself and his action.

Alex (from Sliqua Enterprise Hosting) had held the fire to his feet though without going over the line. Here are just a few examples of the discussion that has been had. Continue Reading →

Listen to the Angry Mob (I Mean Wonderful Customers!)

As I start working on next week’s edition of the Web Hosting Show podcast, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to take a look back at last week’s digital masterpiece.

The highlight of the show for me as far as advice goes was should web hosts listen to the customers – even if they are an angry mob trying to beat down your proverbial door? I say always – but then again, I’m all about making good public relations.  Here are just a few other topics from this week’s episode of the Web Hosting Show.

  • Another cPanel Backup Tool Review – Site Backup CP!
  • Best Blogging Scripts this Side of the Hosting River!
  • A New Hosting News and Resource Link Suggestion!
  • Tease on My Article in the Next Edition of Ping! Zine?
  • Better Tools and Tips for Quick Responses!

Check it out on WebHostingShow.com or download the mp3 and listen while you yourself figure out if your going to deal with those angry mindless clients banging at your door. Afraid it might be too late to dig out an escape tunnel.
