Need Organizing Help? Colorful Vista Folders!

Remember a few posts past, when I asked if anybody had a solution for Windows Vista color coded folders?  I had this on Windows XP with the help of programs like Folderico.  That is when I decided it might be better off creating my own colorful Vista folder icon pack so I could just do this myself - no extra program needed!

Download the Vista Colorful Folder Pack! (.zip)

All of the icons are  in the .ico format, and supports the following sizes:

256 x 256, 128 x 128, 64 x 64, 48 x 48, 32 x 32, 24 x 24, 16 x 16

Why color code your folders? Having color coded folders for certain documents is more than just about “making things pretty”.  It is also very helpful when it comes to getting things done.  Let’s say you use the green folder for your bills, green is the color of money - hence it makes you jump right to it instead of having to hunt through all those yellow folders.

Depending on how popular these are, I might release more colored folders in the future. Feel free to use them however you like.  If you pass it around to a friend, might also mention where you got it and ask them to subscribe to my RSS feed for more!

How Do You Customize My Documents?

fun-folder I’ve been out searching for a program that will allow me to quickly color code the folders on my Vista machine.  The only problem is, I can find a lot of good programs that work with Windows XP but this must be a harder task to accomplish on Vista.

Here are a few of the Windows XP programs I have tried (all good solutions by the way) that just haven’t gotten the job done thus far.

So I am asking you, do you know of a good Vista folder customizer out there?   I need something that would allow me to quickly change the colors to kind of help organize things a ‘bit in my PC.   Better yet, how do you organize your “My Document” folders?

I Want Sandy - Personal Assistant via E-mail

I Want Sandy!Having a hard time remembering certain things that you don’t really have time to write down? Well, if you are one of those people who live in their e-mail inbox IWantSandy.com might be the service for you.

Using this service could not get any easier. You get you own e-mail to contact Sandy at and she will then remember or remind you of certain things. For an example if you send her an e-mail saying, “Remind me to post about Sandy on Mitchelaneous in 15 minutes” then in 15 minutes you will get an e-mail back reminding you of the task you need to do.

The service (trying my best to stop calling the service “she” and “her”) knows the words remember and remind the best. Here is a little more information.

When you signed up, I sent you a “Welcome” message containing your own personal Sandy email address. You send me stuff by writing to me at that address, either directly or by Cc’ing me on a message to someone else. You can write to me in the subject line or the body of an email message — I pay attention to both.

More details about the service can be found on the official web site.

All in all I think this is a neat service, and I am currently trying to find reasons to use it more and more. If you need a little help getting your projects (and/or life) in order you might want Sandy too.

Pin Windows to Your Desktop

Working support, I have to look at a multitude of programs and windows on my desktop every single day. Now sure, I would like to pin certain things on top and let other things fall to the bottom of the window stack. The question is - is there an easy way to get that done?

DeskPinsThe best program I have found to do just that is DeskPins. This freeware application allows you to put simple pins in the corner of your windows to keep some things on top. Here is some more information on it from the developers of the program:

DeskPins can be used to make any application topmost, that is, to keep it above all other windows. Just grab a pin from the DeskPins icon in the system notification area (a.k.a. taskbar tray) and click on any window.

This adds the “always on top” functionality to every program you use. If you have Windows 98/ME/2000/XP and you want to organize your desktop clutter this is one good way of getting it done.

This is a page I look quickly at when I want to go somewhere else. It should be small - yet easy to quickly navigate through.

Get the Basic Gadgets Out of the Way First

Your first tab should have all of the gadgets on it that you actually get some use out of. I like the weather one along with the Google Reader one the most. You might also put other application based gadgets here so that you can get good use out of them.

Here are a few good “basic” gadgets to get you started:

Easy Way to Gather Gadgets Based on Topic

Now every tab after that should be based around things the interest you. You can create them very simply by naming the new tab after your interest. For me I would type in “Web Hosting” and then make sure the check mark for “I’m feeling lucky. Automatically add stuff based on the tab name” is selected.

iGoogle - Tabs

From the suggestions they give you - you can cut out the ones you really don’t like and add a few it might have forgotten.

Should You Create a Popular Tab?
