The Super Mario Icons

This is an icon set I have been wanting to create for a while.  Both Mario and Luigi are icons in the bigger sense of the word.  They are an important and enduring symbol for Nintendo, so why not add them to my desktop icon collection?

The Game Drawer – SNES and N64 Games

SNES and N64 Game Collection

Time for part 3 of my video game collection here.  This time around, I am going to go shifting through drawer number three which is home to my old Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64 games.  As you can see, my n64 game collection is a little on the low side – however, my SNES collection is pretty large.  In there you have such greats as Super Mario All-Stars, Super Mario Kart, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Goldeneye and more.

The Game Drawer – Mobile and NES Games

Mitch's Mobile/NES Game Drawer

I recently did some reorganization of my various video game collections – to make things a little more manageable.  Sorting most of the newest game systems seemed to make sense.  Here is the top drawer in my filing cabinet collection which has all my PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS, NES, Gameboy and Gameboy Advance games.

The PSP, Nintendo DS and NES games fit in really nicely.  The Gameboy and Gameboy Advance games though have to be just tossed into a plastic bin – for the sake of keeping them in the same general area.

For the Nintendo DS, I have:  Brain Age, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, New Super Mario Bros (missing from picture), and Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings.

For the PSP I have: Lumines, World Poker Tour, Burnout Legends, Twisted Metal: Head-on, Mega Man Powered Up, and Ultimate Ghosts ‘n Goblins.

For the NES I have:  Bad Dudes, Super Mario Bros 2, Pro Wrestling and Batman

For the Gameboy I have: Arcade Classic 3: Galaga/Galaxian, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, Arcade Classic 2: Centipede/Millipede, Paperboy, Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, Mega Man IV, Metroid II: Return of Samus and Final Fantasy Adventure.

For the Gameboy Adance I have: Metroid: Zero Mission, The Legend of Zelda, The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, Fire Pro Wrestling 2, Final Fantasy IV Advance, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, Metroid Fussion, and Earthworm Jim.

Also in the drawer (between the Nintendo DS and PSP games) are a handful of PSP demo discs I got for being a member of PlayStation’s Gamer Advisory Panel.

Maybe not the biggest, nor the best collection out there – but I like them all.  Stay tuned for more video game drawers in the future.  I’m only getting started here.

Mitch’s Best and Worst e3 2009

e3 Winners and Losers I have either watched, or seen summaries of each of the press conferences from e3 of the big game consoles, so I thought I would give my opinion of what I liked and what I didn’t like so much.

Sony’s Best – ModNation Racers looked like the most fun thing they had to show, I really like the mix of the Mario-style kart racing with the do it yourself track building.

Sony’s Worst – Final Fantasy XIV was one of those moments of the show where you get really excited, till they say the word Online then you get sad again.  I never played the first “online” Final Fantasy, so maybe I should give it a fare shake first – however I am more of a fan of the more traditional Final Fantasy series.

Nintendo’s Best – It would have to be a tie, because I am really excited about Super Mario Galaxy 2, New Super Mario Bros Wii (horrible name though) and Metroid: Other M.

Nintendo’s Worst – Wii Vitality Sensor is really weird.  Being somebody that owns 4 nun-chucks, 2 classic controllers, a Wii Wheel, the Wii Zapper, and 4 Wii-motes – I am running out of places to store all these accessories.  Also, why do I need a biorhythm sensor to play games?

Microsoft’s Best (and Worst) – Project Natal.  Now I don’t have an Xbox 360, so I am not a fair judge here – however I see this full body motion control to be a real winner or a really big loser.  Now, I understand where kicking a ball might be fun with this, but what about shooting a gun?  Are they expecting me to yell, “pew! pew!” at the screen?

Overall, I think this year’s e3 show, from the point of view of the big three consoles will be, “Oh, you know that motion control stuff we made fun of from the Wii, we do that too… but better!”.

There Will Be Brawl

There Will Be Brawl

Not often do I find original content that I really like to watch or flock to like a giddy school girl, however every so often I find a diamond in the rough as far as the independent content being delivered out there.  That is where the web series There Will Be Brawl comes into play.

This dark, dramatic parody of Super Smash Bros Brawl is just fun to watch for any older Nintendo fans out there.  Yes, this web site does come with a warning that the series is not intended for anybody under the age of 17.

A new episode debuts the second Friday of every month over at The Escapist web site, which is where I found the videos in the first place, however you can also find out more about the cast and crew at ThereWillBeBrawl.com

More Legend of Zelda Free Desktop Icons

It is no secret that I am a huge fan of anything that has the Legend of Zelda slapped across it.  With that said, some people asked after my first Link icon, why did I stop there?  Well, that is a good question, that now has an answer.

I don’t know!  No wait, that isn’t a very good answer so let me do this for you.  Based around the Super Smash Bros Brawl character designs, here are some free desktop icons for you to used based on some of the other Hyrule inhabitants.  Enjoy!

No More Heroes

No_More_Heroes Looking for a Wii game that is a little more geared towards an adult audience?  No More Heroes thus far has been a great investment of a video game.  Think of it as a mix of Kill Bill, Grand Theft Auto and Star Wars, all mixed into one.  Oh yes, you can also save on a toilet.

The Basics – Kill Everybody!

The idea here is simple, You are Travis Touchdown and you are wandering through the fictional town of Santa Destroy, California killing people to move yourself up the list of the world’s best assassins.  In your hand is your beam katana, which can be best described as something to fight with and probably as close as you can get to a light saber without being sued by George Lucas.

Once again, thumbs up for toilet- based saving! Yes – that is awesome indeed.

After Playing, What Do I Think?

I have only played through the first stage thus far (was battling to find the time to do so all last week!) but having done so, I am just itching to play some more,  the unique look, innovative controls and the craving of want to know what happens next are all driving me towards the Wii and away from finishing this review up.

Did I mention that you save on a toilet?

Now word of warning, this is a very mature-rated game, so for those people looking for something the whole family can play, you might not want to pick it up.  However there are dozens of other family friendly games to choose from, so that should not be a problem.  In a way, the originality here reminds me a lot of Viewtiful Joe (another uniquely different game for it’s time).

I love the fact that when your saving you sit on a toilet.

How Much Will No More Heroes Cost Me, the Average Wii Owner?

For those that say there are no new ideas when it comes to video games, No More Heroes proves you wrong.  Sure, it might be a once in a few years shot, however I think No More Heroes deserves all the praise it has gotten, plus now it is relatively cheap (under $20 on Amazon) so there is no excuse not to get it, if you have a Wii.

Oh yeah, the toilet saving is awesome too.

Wii System Memory Fix, Zelda, and More Gaming Goodness!

I am a huge Nintendo fan boy today.  After going through my feeds, finding out all the latest news from the GDC 09 – they have just done a lot of things to make me a very happy customer.

New Zelda Game! – The first thing that got me excited as a new Legend of Zelda game coming out for the Nintendo DS.  The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks looks a lot like the previous DS Zelda game, the Phantom Hourglass – except this time you have a train?

Wii Solves Memory Problems! - So the second thing that got my all excited today was the new SD Card Menu added to the Wii. There you can launch channels saved on the SD cards by temporarily utilizing the Wii’s system memory. Also the Wii added support for SDHC cards up to 32GB! I am just look forward to downloading more Virtual Console games on my 2GB memory card.

New Final Fantasy Sequel – So for the third thing that left me giggling like a school girl, we have Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. A sequal to what SNES fans will remember as Final Fantasy II. Now if they would only do a sequal to the greatest Final Fantasy game ever, Final Fantasy VI.

iGoogle Gets Video Game Themes – Last, but not least, there are a ton of new video game related themes for iGoogle. So now I can start my day with Mega Man!  You know, it would go perfectly with the Mega Man 9 desktop icons I released a few months back.

So if I seem a little overly happy today, now you know why.

Going Retro with the FC Twin Game Console

FC Twin - Play NES and SNES Games

About a week ago, I picked up the FC Twin.  Now, what is it?  In a nutshell it plays both old classic NES and SNES games.  I have a good collection of old Super Nintendo games to play, and I picked up a few more old Nintendo games on eBay to check it out.  Overall, it is a pretty nice machine – if you don’t pay too much for it.

First, I will give you my complaints.

Not all games will work with it correctly.  Wikipedia has a list of a few games that you will have trouble with.  I found on Contra 3, the bullets for the guns disappear every so often.  It is also pretty ghetto when you pick it up for the first time.  You expect it to have a little more “bulk” to it, but honestly feels like a couple of pieces of plastic slapped together.

Now, moving to the positives about the FC Twin, I really liked that this is two systems in one.  Also, it comes with you standard red, white and yellow A/V cable, so no worrying about screwing an adapter on an off my HDTV.  The controllers were a little stiff – but the system does work with the classic SNES controllers if you have a few laying around.

You can usually find these best on eBay, if you are interested in picking one up for yourself.  When push comes to shove, it is a nice alternative – however I am still going to go hunting for both an old Nintendo and Super Nintendo. FC Twin just doesn’t recapture that Nintendo vibe very well. Call me nostalgic. I would give the system three freaky Mitchelaneous thumbs up out of five.
