RegisterFly Customers, Welcome to GoDaddy!

newgdg.jpgI have seen a number of folks out there confused as to why they are getting E-mails from GoDaddy saying that they are their new domain name register. Well, afraid it isn’t a scam folks. GoDaddy seems to be willing to pick up the slack where RegisterFly dropped the ball.

Web hosting and domain name provider Godaddy.Com is to receive domain name accounts from RegisterFly, it was announced this week. The move comes as a response to RegisterFly’s inability to maintain domain names registered by its customers and its subsequent loss of ICANN accreditation.

The company was the center of considerable controversy as its demise left thousands of domain name registrants stranded. Regsiterfly’s subscribers’ domains will automatically be moved to Go Daddy. On completion, over 850,000 domain names will have been transferred to Go Daddy.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Well, I can talk to you for ever on how bad GoDaddy’s Web hosting is but – as far as domains go, they are the king of the ring. So what do you think – is this fair or not?

Who Owns Dig.com and Diggg.com?

DigggCall it curiosity or call it boredom.

If I owned my own cable news network, I could call it an investigation. When you tell somebody who doesn’t know about tech and Web-like things – you tell them to check out “digg” on the Web – they are going to first try “dig.com”. They aren’t going to find what they want though. Dig.com goes to a Disney Web site.

Diggg.com is also registered, although it does not go anywhere. It is owned by some guy in Norway? You can go look at the whois domain name information for yourself.

How about digggg.com? It is taken.

Work fast though, Diggggg.com is free for registration from what I could find.

Dead Like Me – The Movie?

Dead Like MeI never understood why those idiots at Showtime canceled Dead Like Me. It was one of the greatest shows and one of the few I made time to watch each and every week. It has been a few years since the cancellation – but the fan following just keeps building. Thanks to that – it looks like there might be a Dead Like Me movie in the works.

There is now talk of a Dead Like Me movie in the works, with Stephen Herek (Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead, Mr. Holland’s Opus, Rock Star) supposedly on board to direct. The movie is slated to be a direct to DVD affair, but considering that this is where the show seemed to find its audience, I don’t think that will be a problem. No word yet on whether or not the entire original cast will return, or what involvement (if any) series creator Bryan Fuller will have.

All I can say is “Whoo hoo!” and I hope they can get it all together and produced at the same great level of acting and story writing that the TV show was done at. For more on Dead Like Me and it’s cult following (and I mean that in the nicest way) check out DeadLikeMeOnline.com.

Geek Certified Goes Up for Sale

Geek CertifiedWell it looks like one of my favorite Web hosting “middle man” Web sites is possibly being sold.

Geek Certified is a good support certification outfit inside of the hosting industry. The best thing that they do is moderation for support between Web hosts and Web hosting clients.

So why sell a good business? Well it looks like the reason might be because they never charged user fees to the Web hosts or hosting clients, and they can not afford to keep the service up and running.

That’s a death nail that not enough of us think about till it is too late, I’m afraid.

So what does the future look like for Geek Certified? Well, I hope it is picked up by somebody who will really do something with it. Too many hosting Web sites these days are being bought out just for the sake of saying you own the service, then it sits there and nothing is done with it.

For the companies out there that have been certified by them this might be something to keep your eye on. You want to make sure they stay fair and active – because nobody is going to want to associate themselves with the product if it goes downhill from here.

5 Most Popular Hosting Podcasts

Hosting PodcastsI was looking through the archives for my podcast and a few popularity tracking scripts for WordPress and it really is neat to see what podcasts really are the most popular ones. Why keep this list secret though?

You deserve to see the most popular hosting podcasts. Heck you are the reason these are to the top choices – and the best of the best.

1. Lieberman Hosting Woes, WHIR TV 2.0 – Episode 73
Poor old Joe Lieberman just can’t catch a break. First the democrats turn against him, and then his Web site goes down. Is it the work of hackers or just bad Web hosting? Also, WHIR TV is back in the news but is it any better than it was before?

2. Assassinating Spam – Episode 100 – Episode 100
Need to know how to kill off your spam? No need to hire a hit man. I’ll let you know how to do it with your own SpamAssassin. Also customer service tips, often asked question in hosting and some of the latest headlines from inside the industry.

3. Ads, Girls and Xbox Giveaways – Episode 99
Girls, games and marketing – if this Web Hosting Show episode hasn’t gotten you at least a little excited about the fun you have in store for you, I don’t think anything will. From big boobed advertising ploys to getting yourself a free Xbox 360 just for reviewing your Web host you can see there is a lot in store for this episode of the Web Hosting Show.

4. What is Dedicated Web Hosting? – Podcast 77
The shared Web hosting that we all see from day to day isn’t the only type of Web hosting plan out there. You also have the dedicated Web hosting plans. Now you have heard the name before, but do you know what it really means?

5. Ecommerce Web Hosting Guide – Episode 93
You know Joe right? Joe lives down the street from you and runs a little comic book store downtown. Joe doesn’t know much about the Internet but he does know that he would like to expand his business. What should Joe do? Joe should look into getting into ecommerce.

Do you have a favorite episode of the Web Hosting Show podcast? If so – leave a comment and tell us what it is!

XXX Domains Get Voted Down Again

The one story that always seems to come back to me is the triple X domain name struggle. If I am not mistaken, I think I talked about it on the first episode of the Web Hosting Show podcast and that was over two years ago. I do believe that it was first introduced in around the year 2000.

Why can’t we just give it up already? Here is some more information about the ruling from the Domain Tools blog.

Advanced word at the ICANN meeting tonight in Lisbon just came in. I understand that the board has voted down the Dot XXX proposal tonight. The board decided behind closed doors that the new TLD should not be added to the Internet root. It is a long standing tradition at ICANN to have the secret board meeting the night before the official board meeting.

If this ever goes through (which I can almost promise you it will not) it isn’t going to make your Internet safer. It isn’t going to keep all the adult Web sites under one roof. The only thing it will do is make the rich richer. You have to bet they are already making deals for the best .xxx domains and they will be going for top dollar.

Sure you could block the .xxx domain and filter out all that new porn. The old porn is going to stay where it is at though. No successful site is going to want to change their domain name, that is Web suicide. If the US government tries to make them do it, they will just base themselves out of a different country where we can not reach them.

So in turn, instead of creating an easier way to filter porn, we are actually creating more porn on the Web. Dot XXX is not the best idea in the world.

Don’t Touch the Legos

Come on people, don’t take the legos away, please! Think of the poor children!

According to the article, the students had been building an elaborate “Legotown,” but it was accidentally demolished. The teachers decided its destruction was an opportunity to explore “the inequities of private ownership.” According to the teachers, “Our intention was to promote a contrasting set of values: collectivity, collaboration, resource-sharing, and full democratic participation.”

So in other words, if I build a house that has no doors and kind of looks like a boat on wheels – this is a bad thing? Sure it is good to teach kids to play nice with each other but they are going to have to learn eventually that not everything looks the same in the real world.

Is it better to own your own blocks or use the blocks of the community? Personally I would like to have my own blocks. That way I know little Jimmy down the street with his runny nose didn’t get snot all over my gray blocks. If I work harder, I should have more blocks than the guy down the street. Everybody wants to own a little ‘bit of something.

Social issues and politics aside, lets just let the kids play with the damn legos. We are slowly ruining all other childhood pass times, lets not see legos go the way of dodge ball and tag (both known to be banned in some schools).

Was RegisterFly Hacked?

I have been following the RegisterFly saga via the Web Hosting Show over the past few weeks and it just seems to be getting uglier and uglier. It is safe to say that I would recommend anybody registered with them with any service they provide should get out now while the getting is still good.

After reading through a few posts on Web Hosting Talk, I noticed a thread talking about RegisterFly being hacked. Here is a screenshot that was posted:

RegisterFly Hacked

I hope things get better before they get worse, but from the looks of things brighter days are not ahead anytime soon for the RegisterFly company or their customers.

New Podcast Web Site Layout and Design

Well with all of this talk about the Web Hosting Show about to begin it’s third year of bringing audio content to the Web hosting industry – I figured it was about time to give the Web Hosting Show’s Web site a new look and theme.

Yes, we are saying goodbye to year two and hello to year three with an entire new design on WebHostingShow.com.

If you still see a few new things creeping up, don’t mind me – I am just putting the finishing touches on the layout. I do have to say though that this one is so far my favorite of all the “looks” the Web Hosting Show has had.

New WebHostingShow.com

So let me know what you think, and if there is anything you would like to see added – please be my guest and suggest. This Web site is as much yours as it is mine, so if you want to see something here please let me know.

Opinions, suggestions, ideas and complaints are always welcome.
