MSNBC = Disaster TV?

Some people out there watch disaster movies, just to see the panic, destruction and frankly, watching stuff blow up.  I have a feeling that MSNBC fans are of the same ilk.

Here is some of their Democratic National Convention coverage:

Association of Internet and Hosting Service Providers

The Web Hosting Show The Web Hosting Show was great this week.  I got a one on one interview with Paul Hirsch of the AIHSP (the Association of Internet and Hosting Service Providers) explaining this new web hosting group, what they hope to do and how you too can join up.  Check out the podcast for the entire interview:  What is the AIHSP? - Episode 162 of the Web Hosting Show!

Here are some of the questions I asked Paul about the alliance:

  • Where did the idea of staring up AIHSP begin?
  • After looking over a lot of the goals the AIHSP has set, a lot of them seem to be aimed to benefit employees. What about contracted workers, who often not given the same rights as an employee?
  • I have one major concern, what happens to the little web hosts?
  • What can people and businesses do if they want to get involved?

To learn more about what the AIHSP wishes to do, the best place to check out first (after you listen to the podcast, of course) is the AIHSP Goals page.  If you want to learn more about this exciting group or get involved yourself, check out aihsp.org.

OneNews - Create a List of News

OneNews for WordPress in Action The popurls-style of lots of sources on one page is a very interesting one that a lot of people have tried to copy.  Here is a theme for WordPress however, that will get you off on the right foot.

OneNews does a great job at giving you a WordPress powered multiple news headlines on one page tool.  Ok, maybe that isn’t the prettiest way to describe it but it has got me inspired to perhaps create my own new project styled much like this one.  Now just got to find the time…

Social News Site in a Box

Always said you would like to have a social news site like digg, but didn’t have the time to develop or work on it?  Thanks to slinkset.com, you don’t have to.  They promise to deliver you your own social news site that you can customize, user your own domain on and auto-post links via RSS for free.  Here are a few examples:

thymesuck.com_277_280 elections08.slinkset.com_277_280

One more cool feature is it looks like you can create a private site too, that would only be accessible to the people you invite.  Give slinkset.com a shot, and if you create one yourself feel free to share it here with us.

Looking Ahead at WordPress 2.6

With Firefox 3 out, now I need something else to look forward to in the area of tech.  Hmm, WordPress is already working on version 2.6 you say?  I like WordPress, and the hinted at list of new features looks to be building on an already solid 2.5.

Here are a few things to look forward to in WordPress 2.6:

  • Post Revisioning
  • A “Press This” bookmarklet for tumblelog style quick posting
  • A new image editing dialog that offers lots of control over the images in your posts
  • Theme previewing as seen on WordPress.com
  • Built-in word counting in the post editor
  • The ability to relocate your content directory
  • The ability to move wp-config.php out of your web root
  • Drag-and-drop sortable galleries
  • Bulk delete, activate, and deactivate for plugins
  • Check box range selection with shift-click

You can check out the full list of goodies over at Ryan’s blog and also pickup the beta 1 if you have a place you’d like to play with it.

Alltop is all the best of the web?

Inspired by popurls, Alltop hopes to deliver you what popurls does but do so in a way that covers more content rather than cool page tweaks. If your looking for a way to browse through a lot of news rather quickly, without cluttering up your RSS feed reader then Alltop is a must have bookmark.

Best of the Web?

From celebrities, gaming, news, photos, politics, food and more they have more than just a few topics covered well. They also seem to specialize in just bringing the best resources on a lot of different topics together in one spot.

Where a place like popurls gives you general geeky web goodness with a lot of page customization tweaks, Alltop focuses on delivering you as much relative content as they can and do so in a stylish way.
