Yeah, it might be a ‘bit of a bizarre idea – but it is a lot of fun to play.  The demo has been released for Mega Man 8-Bit Death Match.  I didn’t have high expectations for this simple Doom mod, but I was really blown away by how much fun it was.

You start the game out being dropped into an area with familiar faces from the various Mega Man games.  Personally I haven’t gotten past the first level, but I have had a lot of fun trying thus far. Here is a little more information about the game from the developer:

Mega Man 8-bit Deathmatch is a new multiplayer game that aims to take Mega Man’s 8-bit style gameplay and turn it into an online multiplayer first person shooter. Everything you know and love from the classic series will appear in lovely 3d with 8-bit textures and sprites. You will be able to pick from any of your favourite Robot Masters from Mega Man 1 through 6, as well as find and use their weapons scattered around levels.

The battles from within the game are intense (and rather hard) but not so hard that I don’t want to give it another shot later today.  check out these trailers for an idea of what to expect from the look and feel of the game:

Pick up the demo, and let me know what you think.  If you are a big Mega Man fan, this should lead to more than a few hours of endless fun.

So a black mage, Mario, Kirby and Mega Man walk into a bar (and stop me if you have heard this one) and happen to make some really cool wallpaper in world 1-1 of Super Mario Bros. OK, maybe I need to work on the punch line but while we are talking about great wallpaper, I wanted to share this with you.

Everybody has had the dream of playing a classic game like Super Mario Bros with another character.  Wouldn’t it be cool to run around the Mushroom Kingdom as Simon Belmont?  How about Mega Man? Your dreams can come true thanks to Super Mario Crossover.

The idea here is simple.  You play in the world of Super Mario Bros, but you have the choice of several different characters (other than just Mario).  You can play as Simon Belmont from Castlevania, Samus from Metroid, Link from the Legend of Zelda, Mega Man from well… Mega Man and Bill from Contra.

Each character has all their original move sets and power ups, which makes for a very unique game playing experience.

It is very satisfying to whip a Goomba in the face.

Go play Super Mario Crossover for yourself and see what all the buzz is about.  This is simply the best flash based Mario game I think I have ever seen.

I promise you I am trying my hardest not to make any “to the point” jokes…honest!

The quick talking and walking Blade Man was the guide to an ancient castle before the Roboenza incident. The castle’s lord had a fascination with swords, which inspired the robot’s design. He knows a great amount about weapons and swords and can speak on the subject for a very long time.

Chill Man runs around firing his Chill Spike in order to either get you to run into the spikes or to freeze you so he can jump on you. Overall, I found him as a boss to be one of the easier ones.  But now let us get to the “goods” and get you your free icon download link:

Why do I love Nitro Man?  He might give you the best weapon upgrade in Mega Man 10.  The Wheel Cutter attaches to Mega Man’s arm to dart at enemies.  By releasing the attack button, the Wheel Cutter is then launched at enemies, following the contours of the landscape.

Mega Man 9 was great, and I have a feeling Mega Man 10 is going to be even better.  Although I haven’t picked Mega Man 10 up yet (trying to decide if I want the PS3 version or the Wii version) I couldn’t pass up the chance to do a few more desktop icons for you.

The first Robot Master I’ve picked to create a desktop icon for is Sheep Man.  Yes, he is over the top corny – but that is what makes him such a great selection.  He is this year’s Plug Man.

Here’s a ‘bit more of a bio for Sheep Man:

Originally a robot created to manage sheep on a ranch. Who doesn’t love Mega Man?  The challenge, the cursing at the level, the broken controllers, and then the satisfaction of beating that (insert random thing here) Man boss.  Then, of course the grim realization that you have at least seven more bosses to go.
