There Will Be Brawl

There Will Be Brawl

Not often do I find original content that I really like to watch or flock to like a giddy school girl, however every so often I find a diamond in the rough as far as the independent content being delivered out there.  That is where the web series There Will Be Brawl comes into play.

This dark, dramatic parody of Super Smash Bros Brawl is just fun to watch for any older Nintendo fans out there.  Yes, this web site does come with a warning that the series is not intended for anybody under the age of 17.

A new episode debuts the second Friday of every month over at The Escapist web site, which is where I found the videos in the first place, however you can also find out more about the cast and crew at ThereWillBeBrawl.com

Super Mario Defence (Mario Meets Defend Your Castle)

Ever wanted to play a Super Mario game as Bowser? Well, here is your chance with a little Defend Your Castle thrown in for good measure.

You aren't going to make it Luigi(s)!

Your goal in the game is to keep the Marios, Luigis, and other Mushroom Kingdom good guys from reaching your castle.  To help you, you have all kinds of evil tools, such as babombs, goombas, and spring boards (ok, so spring boards aren’t that evil… until you fall to your DOOM!).  With 13 towers and 20 levels, you should be entertained for a long time.

Go play Super Mario Defence and let me know how high of a score you got.  Although simple, it is really addictive once you get the hang of things.  I would also recommend watching the tutorial that is included to help learn the basics of being that reptilian mastermind Bowser.

Down Right Creepy Mario Wallpaper

Why is it that we are all kind of amused by making Nintendo’s favorite plumber, Mario, so darn creepy looking?  There have been some real oddities posted out there in the past that have put a new light on the overall wearing hero,  but this one might take the cake on being the creepiest thus far.

Here is what the artist in question, Rob Sheridan had to say about this oddity of a masterpiece.

I never felt like I’d quite finished the Mario portrait I did a couple weeks ago. The background was rushed and I didn’t have time to make the bricks change over as they should have. So since it proved to be so popular, I figured it was worth expanding upon a little bit.

Desktop Icons from Mario’s Junk Drawer

Ever wonder what things might be kept in Super Mario’s junk drawer.  For us, it is old extension cords, and screws that have fallen out of things that we never even knew we had.  We have old batteries and super glue.  What would the Mushroom Kingdom’s favorite plumber have?

Here is what I would imagine would be at the bottom of Mario’s own junk drawer.

Decorate Your Desktop with Mushroom Icons!

Time to do another free desktop icon release!  This time around, I figured I would focus on Mario’s favorite treat, the mushrooms of the Mushroom kingdom.  It always kind of freaked me out that a power up was a decapitated head of one of the Mushroom Kingdom citizens.  What do you think Toad would say if he saw Mario eat a mushroom?  Would he be shocked?  Could be they are all cannibals anyways.

Here you have, for your desktop customization needs five of the most popular mushroom power-ups in icon form.

Look Back at Super Mario 64

super-mario-64

Looking through some of my past registered games on Nintendo’s web site, I figured – why not post my thoughts about some of my favorites and not so favorite purchases?  Today I’ll tell you about a game that probably needs no introduction, Super Mario 64.  Back in the day, I could play this game for hours and hours on end.  So, I figured – why not relive a part of my childhood and pick it up on the Wii’s Virtual Console?

The story is simple, you are Mario – Princess Peach has been kidnapped, and you have to beat the snot out of Bowser. Why mess with a formula that works?

Everything I loved and hated about this game is still there.  Of course, you never remember the things you hated until you play it again, so let me start there.  I hate the “collect the hidden 6 red coin” challenge.  Doesn’t Mario have anything better to do than to look for oddly colored coins?  Makes me feel more like he has got Attention Deficit Disorder rather than being an Italian man on a mission.

Now that I have that out of the way, the rest of the game is still pretty fun to play.  You get to go free roaming over a number of different stages, complete all the missions you need to until you can fight Bowser.

Get stuck?  There are a number of walkthroughs online that should help you get back on track.

Between the classic controller and the GameCube controller, I liked using the classic controller more.  Either one will work though.  Overall, I would highly recommend purchasing Super Mario 64 if you are looking for a new Wii Virtual Console game this weekend.

Think of this as your Mitchelaneous bailout.  So without further interruption, here is my release of what I would like to call the Super Mario coin icon pack.  Here you have five familiar forms of currency from various Mario games.

Mitch’s Top 10 Video Game Themes

Not so much these days, but years ago the music in games were much better.  I miss those days, of getting certain video game themes stuck in my head.  Maybe it is more nostalgia than not – but I don’t care.  Here are my top 10 favorite video game themes of all time…

Ridley’s Theme from Super Smash Bros Brawl (and Metroid)

Pit’s Theme from Kid Icarus

Create Your Own Super Mario Tune!

ss1This is one of those programs you just happen to stumble upon but you know you have to at least give it a shot.  Mario Paint Composer allows you to create your own Nintendo inspired tune using the old SNES Mario Paint-ish layout.  Even if you don’t have a musical skill in your entire body, it is fun just to drag and drop things onto the board and then hit play.

It is both Mac and Windows friendly too.  Just download, unzip and you’ll be off on your own music creating adventure.  Here is an example video I found via the ‘ol YouTube:

Mitch’s WiiWare and Virtual Console Collection (thus far)

I still have a little more room on my Wii for games, but I am coming close to having to ditch some previously downloaded titles for some new ones.  Give me a couple more months, then I’ll join the chorus of people asking more disk space on the Wii (either via the SD card or by adding an external hard drive).

Here is my WiiWare and Virtual Console Collection so far…

  • Super Mario 64 – Childhood memory, spend many an hour on this game.
  • Sonic the Hedgehog – Never had a Sega, so thought I’d give it a shot.
  • Sim City – Seems to be slower than I remembered.
  • Contra III: The Alien Wars – Awesome fun, but really hard without a friend.
  • Super Castlevania IV – One of the best Castlevania games to this day.
  • Super Mario Bros. – Who doesn’t have this one downloaded?
  • Internet Browser – Handy to check Gmail and Google Reader on.
  • Mario Kart 64 – Fun, might might not make the cut if I need the room.
  • Kid Icarus – Another (never played it the first time) game but happy I have it now.
  • Everybody Votes Channel – Removed it since I only checked it out once or twice.
  • Splatterhouse – Gory fun, but still lacks something…
  • Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream – Fun boxing fun, where did Mike Tyson go?
  • Castlevania – Maybe it’s just me, but this is really hard!
  • Super Metroid – Could play this one forever, over and over again.
  • Super Mario Bros. 3 – Best multi-player Mario game to date.
  • Check Mii Out Channel – Removed it too, due to never using it for anything.
  • River City Ransom – Reminds me of a bad 80′s movie in a good way.
  • Defend your Castle – Well worth the $5 spent on it, and highly addictive.
  • Dr. Mario Online Rx – I needed a puzzle game, and Dr. Mario delivers flawlessly.

Anything else I should check out?
