This is my last list of suggestions of web sites you should be subscribed to.

The list is now complete, well – at least for the current date and time. I am always subscribing to new content so I am sure more suggestions for web sites you should check out are coming in the near future.

The Wrong Advices – Lots of tech news, blogging and WordPress stuff to be had here. Great alternative view and look at a lot of this stuff if your tired of the same old crap from your A list collection of bloggers.

Worthy Example Link? Blogging is harder than you think

thepinkc – Ellie’s work here is totally fabulous, and I would have to say she might be one of the best under appreciated feeds in my entire list of web sites I subscribe to. Lots of tech, advice and optimization stuff here to enjoy.

Worthy Example Link? Get organized with Tidy Start Menu

Unclutterer – Who likes to be cluttered? I know I don’t. I take great pride in my organizational skill but it would be nowhere without sites like Unclutterer which are as inspiring as you can get to get out there and clean the garage, closet or maybe even just your desk.

Worth Example Link? Unclutter Your Online Passwords

Weblog Tools Collection – Once I started becoming such a big fan of WordPress this is one site I had to start coming back to again and again because they had more blogging goodies than most. From themes to plugins and even advice tons of fun to be had.

Worthy Example Link? Other Side Of Permalinks

Thanks goes out to these 4 excellent top of the line web sites and everybody else I have suggested out there since last month. Without you these lists would have been a lot of empty links.

Checkout the Entire Feed Suggestion Series!

Drupal – Drupal is a little more of a WordPress on steroids. Lots of goodies and better membership system in place too.

Nucleus CMS – Possibly the best WordPress alternative out there. Gives you all the same features, add-ons, plugins and support.

Textpattern – Flexable and open source blogging solution – much of the same WordPress look and feel.

Serendipity – This is a PHP-powered weblog application which gives the user an easy way to maintain a weblog or even a complete homepage.

Joomla – Like Drupal, might be too feature rich for the casual blogging fan – but a good engine for in depth web sites or basic blogs.

LifeType – A “state of the art blogging solution” is how LifeType describes themselves.

Habari – Looking at more blogging script alternatives, I ran across one that promises to be, “next-generation blogging.”. I don’t even know what that means, but I do have to admit Habari has a bright future in t-shirt slogans if nothing else.

Wikiblog – This one tries to mix the blogging and wiki sides of things into an interesting mashup of content creation.

eggblog – While a little light on documentation, Eggblog looks to be a nice alternative blogging script for those of you who might not want to follow the fold and use WordPress or one of the other more popular solutions out there.

There you have it – nine other tools you can use to get your content published and your articles out there to the world. Have one I missed?

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Mitchelaneous Facebook Fan Page!

There is no doubt, since the time that man first discovered he could put a sticky substance on the back of a small piece of paper and stick it to something that we like our sticky notes. They help us remember what we <strike>need</strike>, <strike>can</strike>, should be doing at any given date and time.

With that in mind I thought I would look at some of the best both online and offline solutions for us all in the world of getting things done.

Note Solutions for the Desktop

Stickies – This one has to be my all time favorite out of the all. It doesn’t just cover the basics, it also allows a lot of neat tweaks such as hiding them, setting them with an alarm, and transparency. Stickies can be transferred from one machine to another either over a TCP/IP network connection, or by using an SMTP mail server or MAPI client.

PrestoNotes – The interface might not be considered eye candy, but PrestoNotes does get the job done. PrestoNotes lets you create virtual notes on your desktop, that can be hidden or shown as needed.

Fast Note – Not to be out done by the competitors – Fast Note is small program to create post-it style sticky notes for your desktop It runs as a system tray icon and opens a small, re-sizable notes window when clicked.

Rainlendar Lite – Much more of a reminder tool than a real notes application, I think Rainlendar Lite belongs on this list too. Rainlendar Lite is a small and compact desktop calendar that comes with some powerful features under the hood. It integrates nicely with your desktop wallpaper and allows interactive access to selected dates, just click on a date to add an appointment or reminder. Very nice two in one solution.

Note-It – The freeware application is another that can not be sneezed at. The Note-It notes can be of various colors and optionally be kept on top of all other open windows. The notes can be saved, e-mailed or printed too. One drawback (or feature depending on how you look at it) is that they will be deleted on the next reboot (or when they are closed).

Final thoughts – when it comes to the desktop you only really need one of these programs to get the job done. Personally I would suggest using Stickies because it wraps all the basic features up in the best package.

Note Solutions for the Web

Google Notebook – Google’s notebook application make quick and easy work for saving various tid-bits of information on the Web. Working as a sidebar in Firefox or with the Firefox extension, you have yourself a one, two combo that can not be beat.

Zoho Notebook – The Zoho Notebook web app is a lot like Google’s version, but more in depth and feature rich. You can add other documents to your notes, as long as pictures, RSS feeds, video, sound and more. If your looking for the quick and easy route – go with Google. If you need a little more from your note taking, give Zoho a shot.

With or Without the Web, There is a Notes Application for Everybody

You don’t have to be up with the latest web trends to get your note taking done. As this entire article has shown you there are choices to be made on both sides of the fence. Did I leave off one of your favorite? Drop in a comment so we all know what it was or just tell me how much of a overly organized dofus you really think I am.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Mitchelaneous Facebook Fan Page!

I have really been having fun lately with Hosting Hoopla. Going on a “link hunt” to find the best the web hosting industry has to offer is always a challenge, because you often run into the same old stuff time and time again.

That is one of the reasons for the redesign and refocusing of the HostingHoopla.com web site. I wanted to make reading about the web hosting industry fun and informative again.

Now do I expect you to come visit the web site each and every day? No. I want to make things easy for you and that is where the RSS feed comes into play. I have had a number of folks subscribe directly to that. The more popular method though seems to be signing up to get daily updates via your e-mail’s inbox.

+ Subscribe to Hosting Hoopla by E-Mail
+ Subscribe to the Hosting Hoopla RSS Feed

These are two ways to track what is going on in the hosting world that can not be forgotten about. Also I have one last offer for the web hosts or hosting professionals out there. Feel free to contact me at mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll be happy to take your own submissions for the list too. I’d really like to get more coupons and deals from any web hosts or other people who have offers to give in the hosting industry.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Mitchelaneous Facebook Fan Page!

I have always been fixated with the idea of having an easy to manage link blog but have never found an easy way to make it happen. Since I am using del.icio.us for my bookmarking, I don’t want to use that for my link blogging too.

So what is a geek to do? I decided to use my “shared” items list from Google Reader – do a little tweaking here and there and get it up and online that way.

The good news for you is you can now see the neat links I find via my favorite feed reader. (insert excitement here)

The good news for me is this is almost brain dead simple to do, so I shouldn’t lose interest in it because it seems to be too much work.

Everybody wins! Go check out the new Mitchelaneous Links section to see some of the links I have suggested that you check out. If there is anything else you’d like to see there – let me know.

Want to be the best of the best? Well if you are ignoring all of the social networking that is being done out there you are missing out on a lot of big chances to expand your audience and bring in a few new customers, readers, or listeners – depending on the business you are in. Here are a few proven social networking tips I have either used myself or seen used by others.

1. Building Your Brand via the Social Networks

If you have a brand that people like, chances are they will want to be your friend on these various different social networks that are out there. There days there are more and more MySpace and Facebook profiles based around businesses, podcasts and important people on the Web.

2. Make Friends With People Like Yourself

Find like-minded people and friends and add them to your lists via the different social networks out there. This way you are building a little network of people who are just like you and probably will enjoy anything you write or post about. Don’t just go adding a million random people just for the sake of adding people. Find people who you think would interested in what you have to say.

3. Share Your Posts and Content Via the Social Networks

Use the message posting and sharing services they provide to your advantage. MySpace has the “Post a Bulletin” where you can pimp your goods. Facebook has the “Share a Link” function that does much of the same thing. Post teaser links (giving a little ‘bit of information) and a link to go back to your own Web site.

4. Use Widgets and Gadgets to Pimp Your Digital Goods

Take advantage of some of the RSS gadgets out there you can add to places like MySpace to spread the word about yourself. You could use FeedBurner’s headline animator or something like SpringWidgets – where you can put a flash powered RSS reader right on your profile.

5. Add a Player for your Podcast Promotion

Podcasters – there are a number of flash mp3 players you can use as well on MySpace and other social networks that let you plug in custom code. One of my most favorite ones is the one that Odeo produces. Check out my list of the five best podcast players to get a couple of more suggestions.

6. Watch the People Watching You With MyBlogLog

One of my favorite networks out there, MyBlogLog provides you with a little widget you can put on your Web site that shows other MyBlogLog members who are visiting your Web site. Not to be one to show the trap door in the hat that the rabbit is being pulled through – but this is a good trick to make yourself look more popular than you really might be.

7. Add a Link to your Forum Signature

Forums are those social networking tools before social networking had a name. Adding a few link to your signature (if allowed via the forum rules) is a good way to get some links coming back into your Web site too.

8. Add Your RSS Feed to Facebook

On Facebook you can plug your RSS feed right into your profile. Just edit your “Notes” section and include that they should be importing from your RSS feed of choice. Word of warning though, if you post like 20 messages a day you could be getting yourself into trouble. Might just want to include your “light” RSS feed here.

9. Stumble Yourself on StumbleUpon (and get others to stumble you too!)

Make sure you get your most popular content and Web sites listed on StumbleUpon in one way, shape of form. They will deliver you a boat load of traffic (if you content is good) and they also have a pretty cool advertising service as well.

10. Always Digg in Moderation

To digg or not to digg – is that really a question? Now I am not going to tell you to submit everything you do to Digg. Most people find that very annoying and it could get you blocked from the service. It is good to have an account there though so you can meet like-minded people and you can also watch (and interact if you must) when something of yours makes it to the top of the list there.

11. Include a URL on Your Profile Picture

Create a profile icon or picture for the services you sign up for that has your URL on it. This might sound like a cheap form of advertisements – but the more often you can get people to see that URL – the more likely they’ll give it a visit or at least have it stuck in the back of their head to use at a later time and date.

12. Add a Link Back to All of Your Various Projects

More likely than not, all of these services allow you to list at least one link back to your Web site or Web project – take advantage of that. Make sure you include your links and give them descriptions as well so that people know what they are clicking to.

13. Don’t Forget Your Subscription Links

When you include your link to your Web site on one of the social networks out there, also make sure that you list your RSS feed as well. You might put that little orange icon next to each link so people know how to subscribe to you content. You might also include the “Add to Google” or “Add to My Yahoo” type subscription buttons as well to make it easier for people look at your link to subscribe via their subscription method of choice.

14. Is Your Project Social Network Friendly?

Do you have something that others might want to share? Online comics like bLaugh are a good example of this. Right on the Web page, you are given an little “embed code” so that people can share your link on the Web via any social networking service.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Mitchelaneous Facebook Fan Page!
