Turn Off YouTube Spam

YouTube Spam?

Anybody else getting more YouTube spam lately?

I have noticed a few more trickling in lately – so decided to do something about it. If you go visit your My Account page and hunt for around 10 minutes you will find a link for E-mail Options. From there, you can set YouTube to “Don’t send any emails for the above events”.

Hit save, and you should be all fixed up. No offense lovemeChristy72, your just not my kind of girl though.

Don’t Write for Popularity

It seems like these days when I go check out my feed reader to do some reading from my favorite news sources and blogs – there are a lot of posts you can spot that were written just for the sake of trying to bait the social bookmarking and ranking sites for popularity’s sake.

I am not sure this is the best writing practice. Why? Well after you get success with it once, you try it again and again. After a while, all you have left are a lot of wasted hours that you could have spent doing something more creative.

Sure it seems like a lot of these links that you see on digg, delicious, and others seem to come with a pre-packaged and sure fire way to make it to the top. There is a lot to be said for creativity as well though. Just because you wrote one “top 50 Firefox extensions you can use under water” post does not mean that every top 50 post you write will be just as popular.

You also need to worry about offending your current audience as well. New readers are grand, but if you can’t keep them they might start to look elsewhere. Take for example Mashable.com.

I used to really love reading Pete’s web site but the last few weeks it has been nothing but top ten, twenty and thirty lists. I am sure he’s gotten a lot of incoming links from the social bookmarking places but as a reader – I am bored, and I am sure I am not alone.

So don’t write to become popular – become popular because of what you write.

Get Hosting Links in Your Inbox

Hosting Hoopla - Links and Resources

I have really been having fun lately with Hosting Hoopla. Going on a “link hunt” to find the best the web hosting industry has to offer is always a challenge, because you often run into the same old stuff time and time again.

That is one of the reasons for the redesign and refocusing of the HostingHoopla.com web site. I wanted to make reading about the web hosting industry fun and informative again.

Now do I expect you to come visit the web site each and every day? No. I want to make things easy for you and that is where the RSS feed comes into play. I have had a number of folks subscribe directly to that. The more popular method though seems to be signing up to get daily updates via your e-mail’s inbox.

+ Subscribe to Hosting Hoopla by E-Mail
+ Subscribe to the Hosting Hoopla RSS Feed

These are two ways to track what is going on in the hosting world that can not be forgotten about. Also I have one last offer for the web hosts or hosting professionals out there. Feel free to contact me at mitch@mitchkeeler.com and I’ll be happy to take your own submissions for the list too. I’d really like to get more coupons and deals from any web hosts or other people who have offers to give in the hosting industry.

Hide Sidebar Link in Google Reader

Hide Google Reader SidebarWant to hide the sidebar menu in Google Reader but you can’t remember exactly which keyboard combination that was suppose to be? For the combination challenged – I have found a great Greasemonkey user script that does the trick.

The GR Menu Hider gives you that option. After installing it just click the link and your sidebar is there – then it is not. By hiding the menu you can have a larger space to read your feeds.

Tip: For those of you who don’t want the extra script, the way you hide the sidebar via the keyboard shortcut is by hitting the “U” key.

You can go pick up the Greasemonkey script here to install. The only thing different was I wish it was a little icon instead of the words “Toggle menu”. That just seems to stick out like a sore thumb to me.

Simple Hosting Links, News, Resources

Hosting HooplaFeeling like I should go touch up a few older projects of mine, HostingHoopla.com has gotten a major upgrade and refocusing. Hosting Hoopla is now the best “link blog” the web hosting industry has ever seen.

Has the hosting business seen any others? Shh.. don’t steal my thunder.

I’ll be putting up links there on a day to day basis, combing through the press releases and neat web development resources to find the best of the best for all of you. With each link I pass your way I’ll give you a quick description and let you sort of know my feelings about it. I guess you could say it is a kind of extension from the Web Hosting Show podcast. Just think of it like WebHostingShow.com but without all the text and podcasts getting in the way.

Of course you can subscribe via the RSS feed or even get daily e-mail updates. Don’t forget the mobile device friendly version of the Hosting Hoopla link list as well. Many ways to take in the hosting goodness.

Feel free to let me know what you like, what you don’t like, what you need and what you want. I am totally open to suggestions, just send them my way.

4 Favorite Totally Random Feeds

Feed IconI was just clearing out some of my feeds that I am subscribed to – and thought now would be as good of a time as any to list some of my favorite feeds that I subscribe do.

Weblog Tool Collection – Loads of good WordPress news, themes and plugins all in one spot. [RSS Feed]

Unclutterer – Unclutterer.com is a site on personal organization, simple living, and getting rid of clutter. [RSS Feed]

NoDQ.com – This is one of the many pro wrestling (WWE, TNA, MMA) news and rumor web sites out there. Doesn’t have a feed, so I created this one with FeedYes.com. [RSS Feed]

Lorelle on WordPress – Yet another good WordPress and just general writing tips blog that I get a lot of use and information out of. [RSS Feed]

Now back to deleting some of the feeds out of Google Reader I don’t like as much as the ones above. :)
