Comics for the Web Hosting Industry

When it came time for me to create the Web Hosting Show, I almost went in another direction. After I finished writing my first eBook on the Web hosting business, I wanted to do something else Web hosting related. So what did I almost jump into? I wanted to do an Online comic.

I was first inspired by the one that Matt Hartley used to be a part of a few years back (the name escapes me now), but it was just one of those projects I never got around to.

Web Hosting Comic #1Well, never got around to till this past weekend. I worked on a few sketches, scanned them in and if I get enough praise or kind words I will keep posting them.

Give me your feedback, comments and suggestions. Should I keep it up or stick with my day jobs? :)
Doing a cartoon is one of those childhood dreams that I just have not had the time to get around to yet. I figured though with a new year right around the corner - there is no time like the present. If I don’t at least get to try each one of my childhood dreams at least once, what kind of person would I be?

Also, have I made you feel guilty enough to say you love it yet? You know me, I can go on and on if I have to!

Web Hosting Industry Needs Charisma

Random Web Hosting Complaint #1:

Now I have had my complaints about the Web hosting industry before, that much is for sure. One thing that I really think that the Web hosting industry needs is more charisma.

The entire industry is built around the idea of being dull and boring. To the outside world it is a business about nothing else than gray boxes and guys in suits and ties. Now you might be fine with that, but I am not. There are a few stand outs here and there, but not nearly enough.

Where are the attention getter? Where are the people who are not afraid to speak their minds? Where are the bad guys and the good guys in the Web hosting industry? When you look for personality - you are going to be looking for a really long time. Take the Web Host Industry Review.

Now it might be one of the more popular Web hosting magazines out there today, but it is boring. I keep it by my bed to help me during nights I have a hard time sleeping. OK, maybe it has not gotten that bad yet. It isn’t the one thing I want to show folks though when it comes to sharing how exciting the industry I am in can be.

If you are not going to talk about things that excite me, at least try to talk about it a way that will excite me.

I noticed one of my old Web Hosting Show video tutorials got some praise over at the Web Hosting Finds blog. Now that was something I created just for the sake of doing something a little different. Being the six hundred foot penguin dressed in a chicken suit in a sea of guys wearing black and white is never a bad thing.

Where is the Web Hosting News?

My only major complaint with the Web hosting news industry is that there isn’t one. Almost every single big source of news inside of the Web hosting industry is nothing more than a press release dump. Now I have some good friends that write these press releases, so this is nothing against them. They are playing the game along with the rest of us.

I would like to see a source come out that did real Web hosting news though and didn’t just cut and paste press releases and call it news.

I want to see people doing investigations, research and putting together facts and information. Looking around the wild and wacky world of Web hosting, these places are few and far between. Why? It is too hard, that’s why. It is cheaper to pay one guy to sit there and cut and paste than it is to hire a team of writers who can give us something a little more than just the “company line”.

So where are the real Web hosting news Web sites?

Top 5 Web Hosting Industry Blogs

I have been maybe the loudest voice when it comes to Web hosts and Web hosting related services needing to blog, and it sounds like finally somebody has been listening. A year or two ago when I started talking about this, there was maybe two or three Web hosting blogs out there. Now the numbers have grown.

The numbers have grown enough to where I can actually do a top five list without feeling like I have to make half of them up.

The WHIR Blogs

OK, so maybe this isn’t just one blog - but I am going to sum them all up together, because they do give you the nice option of subscribing to all of them at once if you would like. Now what is so great about The WHIR’s Blog?

Well they give you a lot of interesting voices and views from the Web hosting industry. They have some voices from one side and other voices from another. The thing some people don’t understand is Web hosting is a really big tent - and the WHIR Blogs try to fit a lot of the industry biggest spots under their feed.

Amy’s Blog

Amy Armitage (from Lunarpages.com) has a nice blog that I would say is the closest thing to a professional blog Lunarpages has got.

I like the feeling of the whole thing. It has a much more personal feeling to it, and shows that Web hosting doesn’t always have to be about servers and uptime. You can create interesting Web hosting content without feeling like you are putting folks to sleep.

FastServers’s Blog

The folks over at FastServers.net also have a blog for both industry insiders and folks interested in the world of Web hosting to check out and read. Now the content here usually is a little more business focused, but that is OK too.

It gives you a secret window to look through when it comes to running an impressive data center. With multiple authors and interesting content - there is a lot of promise for this company blog to do great things in the future.

Inside ISPCON and HostingCon Blog

The two most important conferences inside of the Web hosting industry both have blogs as well. Now some of the content might be more relative the closer you get to the events, but there is more than enough content to read through and keep you happy all year long.

Both also have podcast content of the conferences as well.

Now sure, that isn’t all of the Web hosting blogs out there - but most of the best ones have been listed. If you need some more hosting content in your RSS reader, check out these Web sites as well. If you have one I didn’t mention, please leave a comment and I will add it to the list.

Oh yeah, just as a final reminder - you can’t forget about one of the best blogs/podcasts out there today for the Web hosting industry, the Web Hosting Show!
