Looking for a specific type or kind of icon for your next big design project?  Well, I have found three different icon search engines to help you in your pursuit of the perfect icon.

FindIcons – This tool features a sophisticated search filtering and result matching system both make it possible for you to get an icon you need in every design tasks. In other words, you type in the keyword that describes your icon, hit search and then grab the one you need.

Iconfinder – This is one I have been using for a while now.  Featuring over 164,000 icons and over 550 icon sets, you are bound to find an icon you like or that will fit in perfectly with your design here.

ICONlook – Last, but not least – you have ICONlook, which also serves as a great way to search and find new icons from all over the web.  It also includes search filters, so you can search for a file 12×12, 16×16, 22×22 and well, you get the general idea here.

So there you have it, three great ways to go search for new icons and images.  Out of the three, I really like Iconfinder the best.  If you have another you think does the job better – be sure to leave it in the comments!

Looking for a few free icons to make your new website design really look good?  Look no further than our friends at Default Icon.  This repository of free icons is a nice place to grab a lot of free icons to use for your own needs.

This is definitely a slick collection of free icons to choose from.

You get black on white, or white on black versions of each icon shown on the web site.  Each icon comes in the png, gif, and eps file formats and range in the following sizes:

• 64×64
• 48×48
• 32×32
• 256×256
• 24×24
• 16×16
• 128×128

The icons have been released under the Creative Commons Attribution-No Derivative Works 3.0.  What does this mean for you?  It allows you redistribution, commercial and non-commercial, as long as it is passed along unchanged and in whole, with credit to interacivemania.  Which this is not too much to ask for what you are getting in return.

Yes, that is the painting of Vigo from Ghostbusters 2.  I really like them both, so hard to pick which one is my favorite.  I really hope to stumble across even more wallpaper like this soon.

Over the past couple of years, I have created a lot of free custom video game inspired desktop icons for you all to download.  While keeping a running list of these on one page worked for a while, I figured it was about time I cleaned up and organized my free icon collections I have created for you to enjoy.

Free Vaga Icons – this set of 60 semi-transparent .png icons are all 16×16 in size are are ready to be download and used for free!

Free Web Dev Icons from IcoJoy – Icojoy team is happy to present you some free icon sets. These icons are free to use in any kind of project unlimited times.

Splashy Icons – 470 icons and counting, all free to use for any web site layout design.

Free Web Design Icon Set – There are 310 of them and they are designed to be used on web design projects, but some are also suited to be used as system icons. They are all 16 by 16 pixels, in PNG format and free to use in print and web projects.

Sizcons – This icon set is free to use for any way you see fit and is available in both 16×16 and 12×12 sizes.

Xiao Icons – This free icon set is alright to use without any permission.  They are simple, great looking and free!  Perfect for any web designer on a budget.

FamFamFam Icons – The FamFamFam icon sets (Silk, Flags and Mini) have been a favorite of many web site designers for a long long long time.  Most of these are free to use, as long as you show the creator how they are being used and you give them a link back – which isn’t too much to ask.

So in conclusion, the person who said you can’t have something for nothing was wrong.  Here is a LOT of something for nothing.  I would suggest though that if you use any of these icon sets, you do thank the designer in one way, shape or form.  I am sure they would appreciate it.  Have another set of free web designer icons you like, or you would like to share with the world?  Feel free to leave your suggestions and praise in the comments.
