I have a thing for free file hosts, as you can tell from my previous list of providers. I keep getting resources sent my way though – a new one each day at least, so I wanted to share one of the more impressive ones I have seen with you, Send6.

The interface of their web site is very simple and to the point. You put in your e-mail address, the e-mail address you wish to send to and upload up to 1GB worth of files. If you hadn’t figured out the catch of the web site yet – you can send 6 files in all. One thing I really like about this service (other than the brain dead simple interface) is the fact it looks like they have a business model too. You can pay from $9 to $99 a month for a different range of limits and these additional perks:

Custom branded version of our service with your own company logo

Use your company domain name (e.g., http://send.yourcompany.com)

Detailed visit and download tracking, and delivery notification

Full hosting, tier-1 bandwidth, server management, and support

If your looking for another free file host to use to send those large photos or movies over to Grandma or your CEO – Send6 definitely deserves your interest.

Add me on Twitter! Come follow my daily antics, links, tips and more @mitchkeeler on Twitter!

Kayla Fleming, the Vice President over at Surpass Hosting is one of those people who I had always read or watched (no wait, that makes me sound like a stalker doesn’t it?) but never introduced myself to till a few days ago. I needed an interesting personality to talk with and she seemed to take the proverbial cake. I have been a big fan of her work and wanted to learn a little more. According to her profile over at the WHIR…

Kayla has experience in all areas of web hosting from conducting market research to securing server environments. Kayla has worked with Internet companies for nine years and has been involved in the web hosting industry since 2002. Under Kayla’s direction, Surpass has reached record growth each year. She is also responsible for the company’s forum, one of the most active communities among web hosts.

Now your caught up to the same spot it Kayla’s story I was at before this greatly enjoyable chat between the two of us.

How did you “break in” to the wild and wacky world of web hosting we live in today?

Kayla: My first job was doing tech support at an all Mac powered ISP. That was powerful inspiration to stay on the geek path. I watched sites like Blogger.com pop up from thin air and saw a lot of trends unfold. I think it happened very naturally and I was at the right place at the right time.

Where is hosting going to be in the next 10 years? Will it be the same or will we all be controlled by the servers we control right now?

Kayla: I would say that hosting may be going home, that is to home servers and increasingly faster Internet connections. But no matter how many do-it-yourselfers are out there, web hosting is still providing a service, a helping hand, and a look into where the Internet is headed. I feel that in 10 years, it will be very much the same as it now.

What is the one thing that Surpass offers that you think nobody can match you on? I want something you look at, and just think, “Damn, we are pretty good at that”.

Kayla: When I think of Surpass, I immediately think of “friendly” and “personable” above all. I think our forum at www.surmunity.com is one of the largest hosting forums. Most of our staff chat on Surmunity when they’re off the clock and at home. We enjoy what we do and want to help people get their businesses and ideas on the web. If anyone has a bad experience then there won’t be anything fun about that. So I think we are good at ensuring people will have a good experience.

Would you rather be known as a personality inside of the hosting world or would you be happier just sitting behind a desk doing your job? From what I can tell there are two different types in web hosting. The social ones that love to mix and mingle, share ideas and put their faces out there and the ones who hide in a basement somewhere in Montana, which are you?

Kayla: In the past year I have enjoyed traveling more than ever and hope to attend more conventions (excuses to take photos for my Flickr). But deep down I am still a content geek in front of the computer for hours; I’m not very complicated.

You are the VP over at Surpass Hosting. There are not many women in powerful positions in the hosting industry. Is that just because there are more men than women in the hosting area or for some other reason?

Kayla: I think this stems from the tech industry in general. Web hosting is also a very unique sector of the entire tech field. Until the average person can answer “What does web hosting mean?” with perfect confidence, it will take some time before both sexes are commonplace.

Why are there so many different web hosting choices out there?

Kayla: It seems like any type of profitable market will become saturated. I was in Buenos Aires, Argentina for New Year’s and while at a street fair, I saw someone selling fresh orange juice. Then a few blocks down there would be another person doing the same. You’d also see people selling the exact same ugly wallets that no one was buying. The key difference here is that people will always enjoy eating and drinking, but will never have a constant need for ugly wallets. Yet, if people see certain products being sold, they’ll want to try it, just to see if they can do it as well or better. Even if it may not seem possible or profitable at first. So all of the good web hosts are glasses of delicious orange juice.. and the bad ones are ugly wallets.

I want to thank Kayla for taking time out to talk with me, and if you want to see more of her work be sure to check out Surpass Hosting, her WHIR.com blog, and her own personal site.

Add me on Twitter! Come follow my daily antics, links, tips and more @mitchkeeler on Twitter!

Talking to a few people both inside and outside the web hosting game there is a certain business model that seems to be taking off in popularity. Many large web hosts looking for new revenue streams are trying to also be Micro hosts. Now what is a Micro host?

Web hosting disk space and bandwidth offers are so large these days it is getting ridiculous web hosts have to do something new. You can always lower the price – so why not make fast food’s equivalent to the web hosting world? That is Micro web hosting 101.

Now who would want to use a stripped down and less expensive hosting plan? Well you will need to toss in a few more perks. Maybe an easy to use page editor or a template system. The target for these will not be Joe down the street who has years of experience in coding HTML, PHP and working with MySQL databases. The target is Jane, who has never done a web site before and wants something simple and quick so that she can type in the content, hit save and she never has to look at the site again for six months.

So is Micro hosting a bad thing? No. It is creating yet another business model that will make the web hosts money and the customers of the web host happy.

Add me on Twitter! Come follow my daily antics, links, tips and more @mitchkeeler on Twitter!

It has been fun the past few days watching the debate on the Web Hosting Show about fxts.net and a segment I did talking about their “promise” to give their clients 10 terabyes of disk space. Well, I give Daniel – the guy in charge over there a lot of credit because he has defended himself and his action.

Alex (from Sliqua Enterprise Hosting) had held the fire to his feet though without going over the line. Here are just a few examples of the discussion that has been had.

Daniel (from fxts.net)

Actually, fxts.net is not a fraud. We had contracted with JaguarPC to offer our service, which was a big mistake. JaguarPC was not a good partner with which to try to do something like this.

Today, we just relaunched our $1 hosting service, with much smaller specs. We plan to increase the specs back to 10 Terabytes each of bandwidth and disk space once we finish building our server cluster. We have moved to HostGator, having already purchased one server with them.

What started on a reseller account at JaguarPC grew too fast for JaguarPC to want to handle (we tried numerous times to upgrade to a clustered server solution at JaguarPC, and they basically told us to go screw ourselves as they were too lazy to help us upgrade). This, combined with a major DDoS attack, forced our service down for about five days. We spent this time moving to our new server at HostGator and reconfiguring the service. We have already begun to transfer old user accounts, and have already refunded most of the users who had accounts on the old server.

Again, after our cluster is fully up and running, the 10 Terabyte plan will be back.

Alex (from Sliqua Enterprise Hosting)

That’s pretty amusing to say the least… Per the comment from Daniel, somehow HostGator is going to allow you to offer such a plan under a reseller account? I’m not trying to be rude, but I don’t know any hosting company that is going to allow you to host 10TB worth of anything for $1. The cheapest I’ve seen a provider go on even 1TB is around $150/mo and that was because they are actually setup in a cluster for Backup space with approx. 200TB.

However, I’m really glad someone is going out there and trying to take full advantage of the “promised” resources provided under their oversold hosting accounts. Maybe this will inspire the majority of hosting companies out there *NOT* to oversell, or at least make it impossible to do what fxts.net is doing with their reseller plans. While I feel bad for JaguarPC and HostGator having to deal with your “requirements”, I don’t believe in overselling hosting and wish them the best of luck dealing with you as a customer.

Check out the entire conversation here.
