Share a Cup of Text with TinyPaste

Have a big block of text you need to send to a friend?  What about a list of URLs or another miscellaneous reason to copy and paste something over from any sort of document to a friend?  TinyPaste is here to help.

Tiny Paste

To use, all you need to do is copy any text you have into the pastebin and then hit the submit button.  In return, you’ll be given a URL to get easy access to that text.  Think of it as TinyURL for just about anything text-based.  As if that wasn’t enough to love – they also have a Firefox extension too.

The Majority of People Suck at Copywriting

As a writer, going out and reading other people’s content out there from time to time is enough to make me want to run off to a deserted island never to be heard or seen from again.  Now I am far from perfect, but time after time I see the same offenders when it comes to copy and headline writing.  Need some examples?

Networking Junkies – You know the type.  They are those people who join every single social network out there, and all they have on their page is enlarged Hanna Montana fan-made glitter signs and copy that reads, “THIZ is MY MY MYSAPCE DuDeZ!  CoMES OUT AND LetS DO THE PARTY! WHOOOO!”

Firefox Add-ons – Just when you think you have found the Firefox extension that will solve all your problems, you go to read more about it and the description goes something like this…

“This tool lets you copy the video from the Youtubez.”

Come on, you spent month after month working on this great Firefox add-on and the only thing you can give me as the user, trying to sell me on your download is two sentences?

Carbon Copy Web Hosts – A good majority of the copy on web hosts’ web pages are just stolen from the guy down the street.  Copy and paste is too easy of a task for these guys, and come on, what do you expect?  They are trying to keep the three customers they have happy who happened to mistake them for somebody important.

Social News Headlines – For an example on this one, go to Digg.com and check out any headline on the page.  Enough said.  Ok, that in itself if the main problem here.  Not only do they give us a crappy headline, then they try to sell us on the point that their headline did all the work.  Come on diggeruzer987, the headline does not say it all!

So do you agree with me yet?  If you can think of anymore copyrighting offenders please feel free to let us all know in the comments.

Make FTP Listings in the Browser Better Looking

When looking at your basic FTP file listing in a browser, it can be a ‘bit on the dull and boring side.  Why not spice that up with a custom user style?  If you have Stylish for Firefox installed – and pick up the “FTP pages were awful” style you could even make them look this pretty…

210_after

No more ugly black and white boring listings for me, I like this much better.  Not only does it look better but it is also much more functional too.

Get More From Google Notebook Guide

Google Notebook Tips

Google Notebook for me has been a life saver in more than one occasion. Right now I use it mainly to manage work related stuff, like quick responses to often asked questions but there are a million and one ways you could get a lot out of it. It is a powerful for just about any job.

googlnote.gif Google Notebook Tools

Get the Google Notebook Firefox Extension – The Firefox extension makes a handy helper if you find yourself diving into Google Notebook a lot during your day. It gives you a little popup menu to manage your notebooks in the bottom right hand corner of the browser.

Open Google Notebook in Firefox Sidebar – This is a hack I guess you could say that I stumbled upon several months ago. Still useful if you like to use the Firefox sidebar function a lot.

Google Notebook for your iGoogle Homepage – If your first stop in your browser is Google, then this iGoogle gadget is a perfect one-two punch to your note saving ways.

googlnote.gif Google Notebook Tasks and Tips

Search Google Notebooks – Always interesting to see what information has been made public and searchable via Google Notebooks.

Getting Things Done with Google Notebook – If not saving isn’t your deal – then you might want to look at using it as a to do list instead. This article from Lifehacker will help you becoming a “getting things done” guru.

Recover Lost Notes from Trash – One handy feature this is still new to Google Notebook is the ability to recover deleted notes and notebooks. Say you have a change of heart about deleting one of your collections, you can recover it here – as long as 30 days hasn’t passed.

Note Your Google Search Results – After using Google Notebook for the first time you should have a new selection under your Google search results to “Note This”. This will add the search result to your notes for safe keeping.

Add “Sections” Back to Notebooks – After the latest redesign, the “sections” seemed to be lost from Google Notebook. To get them back – click on the “New Note” button and then where it says, “Type, paste or add section” click on the blue link for section and you should give yourself back the divider for your single notebook. Organization rocks!

Google Notebook: Use the Privacy Option – Make sure you are not sharing information you don’t want to have public! Since this posts was written I think the default for notebooks is the “private” setting.

Know of anymore tips? If this becomes as popular as the Google Reader guide I did, might have to keep it updated with suggestions if you have them.

5 Best Download Extentions for Firefox

When it comes to downloading files, I like the default Firefox download manager. Sometimes though I am looking for a little more power when it comes to downloading things from the Web.

If you yourself want to become a master downloader – here are the extensions you need to have in your browser’s tool belt.

  1. Download Statusbar – This extension puts your current downloads in the status bar (or right above it) so you don’t have to worry about the default Firefox download manager popping up without warning and throwing off your current browsing.

    Download Statusbar

  2. FlashGot – Download one link, selected links or all the links of a page together at the maximum speed with a single click, using the most popular, lightweight and reliable external download managers.

    Flash Got

  3. PDF Download – PDF downloads need more control! This neat extension allows to choose if you want to view a PDF file inside the browser (as PDF or HTML), if you want to view it outside Firefox with your default or custom PDF reader, or if you want to download it!

    PDF Download

  4. FireFTP – If you need a good FTP client extention that brings that FTP functionality right to the browser, look no further than FireFTP. Along with transferring your files quickly and efficiently, FireFTP also includes more advanced features such as: directory comparison, syncing directories while navigating, SSL encryption, search/filtering, integrity checks, remote editing, drag & drop, file hashing, and much more!

    FireFTP

  5. Fast Video Download – My personal favorite of the “download that flash video” series or extentions that are out there right now. Download video from: Angry Alien, Anime Episodes, Anime Forever, Bad Jojo, Blip.TV, Bo-Funk, Bolt, Break.com, Bubblare.dk, CollegeHumor.com, Current.TV, Daily Motion, Danerd.com, eVideo Share, Google Video, Grinvi, iFilm, Libero.IT Video, HI5 (VideoEgg), My Space, MetaCafe, News.NTV.ru, PornoTube, Put File, Streetfire, Totally Crap, You Tube, V-Social and Vidiac.

    Fast Video Download

So what do you think deserves to be number six on this list?

Using Del.icio.us to Backup Bookmarks

Backup BookmarksIf I ever lost my bookmarks I would be totally lost.

From projects to cool sites to those darn dancing badgers – I need my bookmarks to survive. With that in mind, I have been backing up my bookmarks early and often using these steps and I thought I would share them with you. When it is all said and done you too will be able to use del.icio.us to backup your bookmarks.

There are only two steps you have to take to backup your bookmarks from your browser to Del.icio.us:

Step One: Export from Browser – The first thing you need to do is export your bookmarks from your browser. I use Firefox, so we will stick with that for now. In the Firefox menu bar click on “Bookmarks” and then “Manage Bookmarks” to pull up your bookmark manager.

Export Bookmarks from Browser

Once inside of there, go to “File” then “Export…” and save the “bookmarks.html” to your desktop.

Step Two: Upload to the Web – Login to the del.icio.us web site and then click on the “Settings” link at the top. Under the “Bookmarks” section click on the link for “import/upload”. The rest of the steps from here are easy to follow. Read the instructions and upload your “bookmark.html” file you backed up earlier.

Importing Your Bookmarks

As a tag, I usually use “bookmarkbackup” but you are free to use whatever you wish. Just make sure it is unique so you don’t get them mixed up with your other saved items if you use del.icio.us for multiple reasons.

There you have it. Now your bookmarks should be saved and you don’t need to worry – just in case the worst might happen to your browser, computer and/or house. Del.icio.us to the rescue again!

Gmail Tweaks Worth Switching For

Make Gmail BetterGoing with the recent e-mail issues I have been having – there are several neat things I have learned and picked up along the way while switching from Yahoo! Mail to Gmail. I know there are more people in this same boat so hopefully this will be helpful to all.

Maybe the best (pardon the pun) tool I have found while switching has been the Better Gmail extension for Firefox. It ads a lot of the little customizations that I have been looking to do. My big ones were to hide the invite box, hide the ads, and make Gmail use https:// by default.
