Offer Multiple Subscription Methods

When getting started building a brand Online, a lot of people ask what should they do first?  Well after you get your content flowing, you need a way for people to follow that content.  That is where RSS and all the various feed readers out there come into play.

Everybody has their own way of doing things though, so you need to make sure you meet everybody’s needs.  Thanks to services like FeedBurner, this is pretty easy.  From inside their web site you can generate tons of those subscription links, as well as your standard big orange button and even e-mail newsletter management.  It is by far the best option out there.

As a rule of thumb, you want to give people the ability to follow you via:

  • Your Domain (visiting your web site)
  • Via RSS (using the feed reader of their choosing)
  • and a newsletter (which you can easily setup with an RSS feed with FeedBurner)

Also it never hurts to let people know your RSS feed over and over again.  Such as how I am right now begging you informing you to subscribe to this feed if you want more informative posts just like the one you just read:

Compare your RSS Subscription Numbers

This is a tool I think Google and/or FeedBurner would be smart to pick up as soon as possible.  FeedCompare.com allows you to compare any two feed subscriptions to see how you stack up against the competition.

Above you can see the results of the Mitchelaneous RSS subscription feed numbers in comparison with my podcast, the Web Hosting Show.  You can also drag over a specific time frame to zoom in on the results.   Now lets see what happens when you compare the Web Hosting Show with The WHIR’s main daily news feed:

The Web Hosting Show is hanging in there - was actually surprised how close we were.  Is this the part where I am suppose to beg you to go subscribe to the Web Hosting Show’s RSS feed so we can beat them?  Ok, well you can - but it is all in good fun.  As you can see, FeedCompare.com can be a lot of fun.

Plug Your Yahoo Pipe into FeedBurner

Yesterday I told you how to create a mega ego feed using Yahoo! Pipes. As I told you then, the RSS feed that it spits out is really ugly. Don’t you wish you could make it something you could at least remember or make easier to type out? Thanks to FeedBurner you can.

Step #1 - Get That Ugly Pipe RSS Feed Address

Yahoo! PipesFirst thing you need to do is get the RSS feed for your pipe you created. You can do that by going to the Yahoo! Pipes Web site, click “my pipes”, click on the name of your pipe, and then clicking on “Run this Pipe”. From there click on “Subscribe” and select the RSS output option (Get as RSS).

If you need an easier method, or you missed a click in there, take this URL and replace “yourpipeid” with the random spew of letters and numbers Yahoo gives you to identify your pipe.

http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=yourpipeid&_render=rss

Make sure you have that copied to your clipboard (in Windows higlight it all, right-click and select copy) so you can paste it in our next step.

Step #2 - Plug the Ugly Feed Address Into FeedBurner

FeedBurnerNow that you have your ugly RSS feed in hand, point your browser towards FeedBurner.com. Paste your ugly RSS feed into the text box on FeedBurner’s Web site and click on the “Next” button. From there you will walk through the steps of creating a FeedBurner feed to replace your hideous pipe feed.

What does the final result look like? Well I created an ego feed of my own via Yahoo! Pipes, plugged it into FeedBurner and ended up with the Mega Mitch Feed.

Now from there, you can use FeedBurner to customize the look and feel of your feed and add all kinds of neat functionality to it.

FeedBurner Breeds Paranoia

Yes, I said it - FeedBurner breeds paranoia. As some of you might have noticed I slowed down with the number of posts that I produce around the Web over the holiday weekend because I was a little burnt out and honestly had too many things on my plate.

The time off though did wonders, because now I am just itching to create more content. The problem comes in when I start checking out my FeedBurner subscription numbers. I like to check them out at least once a day, and when I do I am usually happy with they go up and a little depressed when they go down. With the lack of posts the last few days, they have been going down a lot - and not I am racking my brain on how to fix that.

This is something I do every time I notice a lowering in the numbers - it makes me a little paranoid. Did I say something wrong? Am I not as entertaining as I used to be? Well, maybe I can not blame FeedBurner for my entire problem, but it doesn’t help me any.

Damn them for providing me such quality statistical information!

FeedBurner Networks

feedburner.jpgI saw a “My Networks” link on top of FeedBurner that I had never seen before. Silly me, I just had to click it! This was the message sent my way via the tubes.

We can’t say, but since you landed here, we applaud your curiosity! You are one of a select group of FeedBurner publishers who can now create and discover other FeedBurner Networks. Networks is our new service (still in beta) that helps subscribers, other publishers and even advertisers more easily discover your great content.

This looks like a really interesting idea. I like the idea of bringing feeds and media together in little hubs for people to subscribe to. You can go join a network that is already in place, or you can go and create your own.

So what is to be gained by joining one of these networks?

Every participating publisher has an equal opportunity to appear on a network “landing page” that is comprised of the most recent headlines from the collective group (view an sample landing page). We encourage publishers to brand their network with a descriptive and compelling name and even include a logo.

FeedBurner provides a number of promotional tools to help participants get the word out including a network badge, chicklet and FeedBurner’s popular BuzzBoost service. In addition, publishers who are invited to join a network will also have the opportunity to submit their feed to FeedBurner’s growing advertising network, FAN.

Check out more details on this at FeedBurner.com’s Web site.

FeedBurner Rocks

feedburner.jpgAs I mentioned earlier in the week, I have had problems with my RSS feed updating through FeedBurner. It looks like all is working well again, and I only have one team to thank for that. FeedBurner bended over backwards for me while I was having the problems. Having a free service do what they can to make me happy is a nice thing to see these days. It almost makes me want to buy a paid account just to say thanks!

I have been a user of FeedBurner almost since their launch, and I have to say those folks are good at what they do!
