Vista Downloads and Stylish Tools

Here are a few of the cool downloads I’ve been playing with that have made my Windows Vista week a little more stylish and useful.

Windows Sidebar Styler - I wasn’t going to use the Windows sidebar at first, but I thought I would give it a chance for a while and thus far the calender and notes are pretty handy to have there. Windows Sidebar Styler allows you to tweak the look and feel of it (which is needed after a while) and a few other cool features. It is a keeper if you use the sidebar any in Vista.

Logon Studio Vista - This one isn’t helping me as far as performance or getting things done, but have just cool effects and things isn’t always a bad thing. Logon Studio Vista allows you to change the background for the login screen in Vista. There are plenty of pretty ones to choose from too. Just take your pick! Read the rest of this entry »

Record Breaking Web Hosting Podcast

Web Hosting and Development PodcastLast week’s episode of the Web Hosting Show had nearly 2,000 downloads in the span of 7 days. That is a new personal record for me. Now I am not usually one to talk about numbers, because compared with other out there I know I am probably going to be laughed or at least snickered at.

I don’t care though, because I am still proud!

So you know what, lets do it again! Episode 116 of the Web Hosting Show was just uploaded today. Download it, share it - give it to a friend because it is one heck of a good show if I do say so myself. On this week’s show I covered:

  • Company Bio of FastServers.Net (Part 2 of 3)!
  • Google Webmaster Tools Setup Guide and Help!
  • How to Catch Hosting Friends with LinkedIn!
  • The Best Way to Submit Your Site to the Search Engines!
  • What is a Reverse IP Lookup?

So what are you waiting for? Go download the mp3 and lets see if we can get 4,000 downloads this week!

2 Hosting Podcasts, 1 Wacky Hosting Guy

Can I talk you in to a deal? I promise to deliver you two web hosting podcasts you can be both informed and educated by and all I ask for in return, is that you listen to them, enjoy them and maybe pass them along to a friend or two. That’s not asking too much - is it?

+ Interview With a Host Searcher - Episode 113

On this podcast I was thrilled to get to have a sit down chat with Host Search’s Web Editor John Hughes. Because of the Web Hosting Show, I have known John for a few years as one of the public voices and go to guys for Host Search. He really is one of the “good guys” in the hosting industry.

+ Who Hosts That Site? - Episode 114

  • Check Out a Free Resource to Find Out Who’s Hosting Your Favorite Web Sites on each of the Internets
  • Should Web Hosts Start an Anti-Popup Policy?
  • Mitch Starts His “One Midget Joke Per Podcast” Policy
  • One Dump Promises To Give You Another Reliable (and free) File Hosting Solution

Two free hosting podcasts to be entertained by all done by just one wild and wacky web hosting guru. Love and care is in there, but I left out the puppy dog tails. Come on, puppy dog tails are what boys are made of - not podcasts, silly.

Safer Browsing Tips for Anybody

Now I know there are a lot of “safe browsing tips” article out there in the world today. The problem is most of them are aimed towards folks that already know how to protect themselves, for the most part, Online.

Those people are not the ones needing help. The people needing help are the ones that just spend a few hours Online each night and want to find something and happen to stumble across a few bad links and get themselves infested with badness. If you find yourself in this camp, read on.

Danger Surf the Web Like You Have a Brain

The number best thing you can do for yourself is to surf smarter. Don’t go looking for crazy midget midnight cracks for your favorite image editor. Stay away from places that just do not seem right. One tool that will help you tell the good places from the bad places is McAfee’s SiteAdvisor. It will give you the red light and green light warnings for good and bad places Online.

Danger Be More Careful With Your E-mailing Ways

Another helpful tip for folks who might not be in the know would be to be careful what you open in your E-mails. We have all heard the “don’t open E-mail attachments” rule. It is a good one.

Follow it!

I don’t care if you know who sent it - still, do not open it. If you really want to check it out, call the person on the phone or E-mail them real quick and ask. If the say, “Yeah, I sent you those naughty photos of (insert your favorite celebrity here)” then go ahead and open it. If they say, “Hu?” then get rid of it as soon as possible.

Danger Don’t Search Google for Free Crap

Remember that old saying, “If you have to ask, you’ll never know”? Well it is true as well. If you type in to Google “give me free music downloads of (insert famous recording artist here)” you are going to get yourself into trouble.

The days of the old Napster ways have come and gone and it is time to find new ways of finding your free stuff. Look into indy bands, find free tunes on the artists’ Web sites that you actually know, or break down and buy the damn music.

Hopefully this will be a good beginners’ guide for getting around the Web without getting yourself in trouble. The best thing you can do is use common sense - and if you don’t have that, then make sure that you browse the World Wide Web with a friend who does.

With Firefox 2 coming out today, you might be wondering what to do with it next. You got it, but how can you make it better, faster, stronger? I’ve been updating Firefox Facts with launch coverage today, and as always you can expect a lot of extension reviews, themes and much more.
