One more cool feature is it looks like you can create a private site too, that would only be accessible to the people you invite. Give slinkset.com a shot, and if you create one yourself feel free to share it here with us.

There is another digg clone from the hosting world to look at today. HostingBookmarks.com is the first though to focus more towards hosting news and help rather than hosting deals.

I’d like to see them ditch the “this was made with Pligg” stuff – kind of makes a bad first impression. Funny enough though, when you register and login it goes away from public view so maybe it is something they are just not seeing. To be a success it looks like this web site just needs more members.

Submitting a link couldn’t be easier – so that is one positive. Here is an example link I submitted for testing purposes:

http://www.hostingbookmarks.com/WebHostingHelp/The_Web_Hosting_Show/

Overall with a little bigger of a user base and a few tweaks to the interface here and there, Hosting Bookmarks could be an awesome service and tools for finding out what is going on inside the hosting world.

So with Hosting Bookmarks in the mix, that makes three social hosting tools out there to date:

Deals – Top Host Deals

Reviews – Hostigg

News and Links – Hosting Bookmarks

What will be next? I am still sort of surprised that none of the bigger hosting players have jumped into this mix – but then again it is still early in the game.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Mitchelaneous Facebook Fan Page!

So will Top Host Deals become the digg of the web hosting world? Well there is a little ‘bit of competition out there in the market – ok, by competition I mean one other hosting deal social site Hostigg.com.

Top Host Deals looks nice and look as if it hit all the major high points to be a leader in this area of the web. You have the highest voted hosting deals. You have upcoming or just submitted deals. You have categories to help you trim down your search.

Now that Top Host Deals is out of the gate, I will be interested in seeing what they do to separate themselves from the crowd.

It seems like these days when I go check out my feed reader to do some reading from my favorite news sources and blogs – there are a lot of posts you can spot that were written just for the sake of trying to bait the social bookmarking and ranking sites for popularity’s sake.

I am not sure this is the best writing practice. Why? Well after you get success with it once, you try it again and again. After a while, all you have left are a lot of wasted hours that you could have spent doing something more creative.

Sure it seems like a lot of these links that you see on digg, delicious, and others seem to come with a pre-packaged and sure fire way to make it to the top. There is a lot to be said for creativity as well though. Just because you wrote one “top 50 Firefox extensions you can use under water” post does not mean that every top 50 post you write will be just as popular.

You also need to worry about offending your current audience as well. New readers are grand, but if you can’t keep them they might start to look elsewhere. Take for example Mashable.com.

I used to really love reading Pete’s web site but the last few weeks it has been nothing but top ten, twenty and thirty lists. I am sure he’s gotten a lot of incoming links from the social bookmarking places but as a reader – I am bored, and I am sure I am not alone.

So don’t write to become popular – become popular because of what you write.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Mitchelaneous Facebook Fan Page!

If I owned my own cable news network, I could call it an investigation. When you tell somebody who doesn’t know about tech and Web-like things – you tell them to check out “digg” on the Web – they are going to first try “dig.com”. They aren’t going to find what they want though. Dig.com goes to a Disney Web site.

Diggg.com is also registered, although it does not go anywhere. It is owned by some guy in Norway? You can go look at the whois domain name information for yourself.

How about digggg.com? It is taken.

Work fast though, Diggggg.com is free for registration from what I could find.

I really love the new Digg layout that got launched yesterday. It is so much better than the last one that was released. After the last one, digg left it’s place for me as my start page – and I just started to subscribe to updates via the RSS feed.

Now though, I think I will find myself coming back more and more.

There is just so much goodness to check out right now, almost too much to talk about. Of course, being one of those prolific podcasters, I have to talk about the new podcast feature. Want to give me an early Christmas present?

Go Digg the Web Hosting Show Podcast!

Sure, when you look at the list of podcasts that are on top there are no big surprises right now. It is the same top list that every other podcast catcher or ranker shows. I doubt I would ever even break past ten diggs at the most. This feature does show that Digg has a future in finding new media and bringing it the attention it deserves.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Mitchelaneous Facebook Fan Page!

4. You are likely to see the same 10 extensions listed on at least 5 different lists.

5. They are a cheap ploy by bloggers to get attention from social networking Web sites like Digg.

I have the solution for all the Netscape versus Digg arguing going back and forth on the Web these days. We take both Kevin Rose and Jason Calacanis and put them in a ring! Let’s toss in a ladder for good measure, and high above the ring we could put a big sack of publicity.

Watching them both battle it out in headlocks and suplexes would be a lot more entertaining than seeing the battle of the egos that we have now. This isn’t about Netscape wanting Digg’s users. This is about Jason Calacanis wanting free publicity by picking on the biggest dog in the yard. Even if he eventually looses this battle, he has already won the war. More people have checked him out and have checked out the new Netscape.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love watching a good fight. I just wish they would pick up the pace and take it to a back alley somewhere in Silicon Valley. Now that would be a pay-per-view event I could really get into.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Mitchelaneous Facebook Fan Page!

As many of us do, I get tired of finding a story on Digg, get excited about reading it, and then finding out the Web page has already gone down due to traffic. Every so often, via the comments on Digg you can find mirror links, but I am tired of waiting.

That is why I plugged the Digg – add mirrors script into my Greasemonkey extension for Firefox. It adds a nice small box of mirrors to the side of the link on Digg. From here, if a link is down, I can still get to the content.

So Jason Calacanis of the new Netscape actually wants to pay folks for finding stories. I say good for him. People need to make money, and as somebody who earns a living off of what he makes from the Internet, I like seeing this type of system work. I don’t know one person who could honestly say he would turn down money for just sitting around and finding links on the Web. Eric Rice has it right.

Now where I see a problem to this idea of stealing away the top Digg users is that I don’t go to Digg to go see what top poster number one through five is posting. I go to Digg because I want to see what is on Digg. Five guys leave, five guys come in to take their places. I think if Netscape really wants to win, they are going to have to take a look at Digg and do whatever Digg isn’t able to do right now. Don’t steal ideas, make ideas.

So to sum things up, getting paid is good. Stealing “talent” and ideas? Well, that one seems a little sleazy.
