WWE’s Maria Kanellis Desktop Icon

Playing around with creating desktop icons for my Windows Vista PC, I was using this picture as a kind of test to see what I could do.  Looked good to me (come on, it is Maria after all), so I thought I would release it out to all of you.  Can you tell which icon stands out more?

WWE Maria Desktop Icon!

It is in the .ico format, and supports the following sizes:

256 x 256, 128 x 128, 64 x 64, 48 x 48, 32 x 32, 24 x 24, 16 x 16

Download the Maria Kanellis Desktop Icon (.zip)

Download it and feel free to do whatever you want with it.  If you pass it around, just make sure you give me a link back, or better yet just subscribe to my RSS feed and we will call it even.

Playing with Prism Again

Prism Rocks! Prism, Mozilla’s answer for bringing the web in as desktop applications, continues to amaze me.  I just downloaded the newest release,  and it has a few new features worth checking out.  They have an extension for one, that works with Firefox 3 so that you can quickly split out web applications from Firefox without the need to manage a separate Prism application.  You can convert to a Prism powered application right there in Firefox.

You can also pick an icon to represent the web site or Prism application you are setting it up as.  By default it searches for the favicon, but you can edit it to go to any image.  That image will become the desktop icon for it.  The Fluid Flickr group had a lot of nice icon examples you could use too. (thanks to TwisterMc for that jewel)

To help with performance, each Prism app also runs in it’s own profile:

Prism now places each web app into its own process/profile so they don’t interfere with each other, which also makes it possible to install a web app twice and use it simultaneously with two different user accounts.

Personally Prism really excites me a lot and if this is still the beta form of the project, I can’t imagine the goodies waiting for me in the final release.

Is Your Desktop Naked?

Well, mine is. Working with an empty desktop can make managing your work a lot easier. For me, all the folders and paths I need are right inside of the start menu. From there I can get to my documents, music, photos and more.

Mitch’s Empty Desktop

With a clean desktop I have more room to work. Now for designers you could see this coming in handy because they would have plenty of place to work on multiple images, files and folders and have them all saved to the desktop.

With my podcast - I do much of the same. I keep all the different segments I have recorded save temporarily to to desktop so that way I have them handy when I need them. That way when I finish my job or project I can just hit Ctrl + A then move them over to a new folder if I need to keep them or hit delete if I want to toss them away.

How about you? How naked is your desktop or have you tried it with a naked desktop? For me it is one of my easy productivity techniques that keep me sane.

Mitch Does Dual Screen (Productivity Tip)

Decided to hook my old monitor up next to my new one, since my new PC can handle both. At first it was a little odd but I do have to say I feel more productive at least.

Dual Screens

It makes it much easier to check e-mail, browse the Web and work on an article all at the same time. Of course right now I am still amused by moving windows from screen to screen but I am sure that will pass with time.

Top Picks for Screen & Capturing Gratification

Need a better way to capture the images on your desktop? Now anybody using Windows for more than five minutes can tell you that this is what the “Print Screen” button is for, right? Well true - that does get the job done but some of us need a little more. Here are my best suggestions for desktop image capturing and web site image capturing.

…for the Desktop

MWSnap - this is a powerful free tool that puts your screen capturing ways on steroids. If Microsoft ever released a power toy for screen captures, I have a feeling this is what it would look like.

MWSnapHere are five MWSnap features I like the most (in no specific order):

  • 5 snapping modes
  • Support for BMP, JPG, TIFF, PNG and GIF formats
  • System-wide hotkeys
  • Clipboard copy/paste
  • Auto-start with Windows and minimizes to system tray

…for the Web

WebShot - By far, WebShot is the best web site screen capture freeware package you can get. You can capture full size or thumbnail screenshots in a number of different image formats. Wish the documentation was a little better, but it really isn’t that hard to figure out.

Web ShotsHere are some of the features WebShot provides that I really enjoy a lot:

  • Automatic determination of page width and height that captures the whole page accurately. Does a great job every time.
  • Browser size specification allows you to capture the whole page or part of it.
  • Image encoding to JPG, GIF, PNG, and BMP with image quality control to save on disk space. Everybody should have a format to love.

There are a few other options out there too but these seem to far out weight their alternatives from head to toe. So next time you need to grab an screenshot of something on your desktop you should be more than prepaired to meet that chore head on with these freeware goodies.
