There is no doubt in my mind that Internet marketing and search engine optimization are playing a larger and larger role in a webmaster’s life. A few years back, you would put up a web site and hope for the best. These days though, you must really study and learn several aspects of the marketing game if you want to stand a chance.
Marketing in general has really always excited me, so I thought it might be a good idea to talk with somebody who does this as their day to day business. Daryl Kennedy is the VP of Operations over at TechWyse Internet Marketing. When approached about the interview - my first thoughts were “Whoo hoo! Now I can pick the brain of somebody who really understands this Internet marking stuff” and I have to say I was not disappointed.
How did you find yourself in the Internet marketing world? Most people on the web want to get to the top themselves in popularity. You guys specialize in helping other people make a name for themselves.
Daryl: Getting into the Internet marketing world for myself was quite by accident. I have always been a resourceful person. I have always enjoyed efficiency and understanding new technology. After being in the business of developing web sites, I decided it would be far more resourceful to learn and understand the newer search engine phenomena then hit the streets cold calling which was far more traditional.
After studying search engines for about 6 months, I quickly found that by following search engine principles I could get our own company on the first page of Google, Yahoo! and MSN rather easily. Ironically, many other companies across North America and especially Toronto, Canada began noticing themselves! Since this was clearly a way for companies to begin to generate revenue they began asking me to help them in the same way.

Talking to a few people both inside and outside the web hosting game there is a certain business model that seems to be taking off in popularity. Many large web hosts looking for new revenue streams are trying to also be Micro hosts. Now what is a Micro host?
Web hosting disk space and bandwidth offers are so large these days it is getting ridiculous web hosts have to do something new. You can always lower the price - so why not make fast food’s equivalent to the web hosting world? That is Micro web hosting 101.
Now who would want to use a stripped down and less expensive hosting plan? Well you will need to toss in a few more perks. Maybe an easy to use page editor or a template system. The target for these will not be Joe down the street who has years of experience in coding HTML, PHP and working with MySQL databases. The target is Jane, who has never done a web site before and wants something simple and quick so that she can type in the content, hit save and she never has to look at the site again for six months.
So is Micro hosting a bad thing? No. It is creating yet another business model that will make the web hosts money and the customers of the web host happy.

Every so often I get an e-mail from a web host who is running a blog and they tell me they have run out of “blog-like” things to say. “Hogwash!” I yell back at them. Ok, so I have never actually used that word exactly - but you get my point. If all else fails, promote yourself.
Yes, corporate blogs and bloggers should be more egotistical and talk more about themselves when there is nothing else left to say.
Here are a few suggestions to get you started:
1. Tell the story of how you came to be. Have you told your rags to riches story yet? Let people how the company started up and how it has grown since then.
2. Pitch one of your products and let me know how real people can make use of it. Don’t pitch it to me as a salesman, give it to me as a person to person conversation and win me over on why it might be for me or somebody that I might know.
3. Who are you? You might also do a type of “profile” post where you tell people more about the folks behind the scene. Let me know who worker number 1,356 is and why he is so important to the day to day business. (and if he’s not, time to give him the pink slip!)
As you can see, when talking about one’s self you could really go on and on. Have any other suggestions as far as ideas go for more corporate writing spot on the Web?

There is no doubt that the two “easy ways out” when it comes to Web popularity - you either know somebody famous that mentions your service or you. The second way would be to pay lots and lots of money on advertising. Other than that, building a “successful” brand on your own is really hard.
The main problem we suffer is that a lot of folks only focus on following the big voices Online. If somebody like Robert Scoble, Kevin Rose or Leo Laporte don’t mention it, use it, or give it a thumbs up you are dead to a lot of the world. That is not their fault, they are just folks Online as well that just happened to get lucky and gain a real voice out there in the geeky world we live in.
Firefox Facts gain most of its popularity because Chris Pirillo really helped inspire and lead me into the entire project from day one. So I have gotten a perk out of this type of popular voices driving the popular vote.
I’ve recently been actually spending money in promoting the Web Hosting Show in new audiences and I have to say it has been paying off a little ‘bit. Most of my projects are done as a hobby though - so not sure if I can count myself.
I do feel sorry for folks out there trying to build a business from the ground up because if your not on the A-list or know somebody on the A-list it is almost impossible to “make it”.

Well it looks like one of my favorite Web hosting “middle man” Web sites is possibly being sold.
Geek Certified is a good support certification outfit inside of the hosting industry. The best thing that they do is moderation for support between Web hosts and Web hosting clients.
So why sell a good business? Well it looks like the reason might be because they never charged user fees to the Web hosts or hosting clients, and they can not afford to keep the service up and running.
That’s a death nail that not enough of us think about till it is too late, I’m afraid.
So what does the future look like for Geek Certified? Well, I hope it is picked up by somebody who will really do something with it. Too many hosting Web sites these days are being bought out just for the sake of saying you own the service, then it sits there and nothing is done with it.
For the companies out there that have been certified by them this might be something to keep your eye on. You want to make sure they stay fair and active - because nobody is going to want to associate themselves with the product if it goes downhill from here.

I have been following the RegisterFly saga via the Web Hosting Show over the past few weeks and it just seems to be getting uglier and uglier. It is safe to say that I would recommend anybody registered with them with any service they provide should get out now while the getting is still good.
After reading through a few posts on Web Hosting Talk, I noticed a thread talking about RegisterFly being hacked. Here is a screenshot that was posted:
I hope things get better before they get worse, but from the looks of things brighter days are not ahead anytime soon for the RegisterFly company or their customers.
