WHIR Blogs Are Getting Better

I might have given them a rib or two when they first started, but I do have to say that the WHIR’s blog section is getting better over time. I have really been enjoying some of the content they have been putting up the last few weeks and I hope there is more good content to come.

Now some might say I go a little overboard when I criticize the Web Host Industry Review, but that is because I would like to see them get better. Anything I have said has not been really meant to be taken in a mean spirited way. I just think from time to time they could do better – and it is nice to see that they have come through with that via the new WHIR Blogs.

So I might be the first to poke them with a sharp stick – but I will also offer them a pat on the back when I see something that I like. Keep up the good work Liam!

Review Me Shows Promise

Now I have touched on the topic of getting “paid to post” entries and how stupid all of this fighting back and forth has been with the ego bloggers against the regular “Joes” and “Janes” on the street. It all comes down to one simple idea. Do you want to do what you want to do or do you want to let a small group of popular bloggers dictate the “rules of blogging” to you? I picked the first choice.

This afternoon I signed up with Review Me, and in turn I am going to be getting paid $30 once this post is posted and done with. With that said, if you go through the Web site and want me to write about something it will only cost you $30 as well (looks like they bumped me up to $60). Not too bad of a price, I must say. Some people are getting up to $250 – but I don’t know who is going to really pay that much for one post. I probably could have had a higher number, but since the domain name switch a few months ago I have been building link popularity all over again.

The idea behind Review Me is simple, you sign up and they judge how much you are worth by popularity. Once that is done and you get in, advertisers will come to you and ask you to write about them. Now you do not have to post a positive review but you do have to disclose somewhere that you are doing paid posts. I think this is a nice balance and should keep the ego bloggers at bay for now.

I am looking at this as more than just another way to get some cash. That is nice and all, but I sometimes really need to find a good muse. Interesting ideas are not that easy to find so if I have people feeding me ideas and offering to pay me to write it, that is every real writer’s dream come true.

More WHIR Blog Feedback

Now it looks like I might have rubbed a few people at the WHIR the wrong way with my commentary on how the only folks that are commenting on WHIR blogs are the other WHIR writers. It’s funny this catches their attention and me mentioning that WHIR TV would be a lot better with Anastasia Tubanos in a bikini doesn’t. For the post that started all of this – click here.

Let me comment on something Liam Eagle said though:

Mitch seems to think he’s unraveling some sort of conspiracy. But this is hardly a revelation. It ought to be patently obvious to anyone reading the WHIR blogs that we’re posting comments on each other’s entries. We’re certainly not doing it in secret.

Nobody said it was a secret.

The reason I thought it was funny is that the Web Host Industry Review is one of the biggest dogs in the fight. They are the “leaders of the pack” in some people’s eyes. When you look at other Web hosting leaders blog (take Bob Parsons for example) he gets comments all over the place. Why isn’t the WHIR Blog team getting the same reaction? That is what I thought was “odd” and then “funny”.

Just to make it clear yet again, just because I might question or highlight what the WHIR is doing doesn’t mean there is a “negative meaning” behind it. Heck, I even wrote for the WHIR once upon a time (did one article too my whole month there :) ).

One thing that the WHIR does very well is Web hosting news. I am in no way, shape or form in competition with the WHIR team. They have a bigger budget, a bigger team, and more leverage in the business than a little old Web hosting podcaster like me has. I am only trying to bring attention to what I see.

Now one more comment on what Liam had to say in his own comment:

Hey Mitch. I was going to reply here, but I thought maybe nobody would see it, so I put something up on my blog. :)

Yes Liam, maybe nobody would have seen it here, but then again – where did WHIR TV go anyways?

Guest Blogging for Lunarpages

Well Amy told me I was free to post whenever I wanted or needed to, so I figure I would take her up on the offer. Go check out what I had to say about my first three weeks working for Lunarpages.com. I really like that Lunarpages is one of the few Web hosts who do blog. That was a major factor into me wanting to go there. They don’t seem so closed off to the idea of bringing in new ways to get in touch with the customer base.

Best Blogging Advice

I have noticed more places and people mentioning how to make your blogging habits better. Sure, we all need help from time to time – but I have noticed something. I always seem to do my best writing when I toss the rules to the side, open up NoteTab Pro and just start to “go” from whatever is on my mind at the time.

Try not to get yourself too stress out over making a comment about everything. A lot of folks just want to jump on everybody’s bandwaggon and add that, “Yeah, me too!” to the conversation. I want to read something that either informs me or entertains me. Before you make that next post on your blog, ask yourself if you are doing either one of those first.

For more tips and help check out the post Chris made a few days ago about eliminating the echo chamber. He lists a lot of things even I had not though about till I read it.

Blogebrities Need a Vacation

On an Internet where we are suppose to have millions of voices talking about topics; why is it we are forced to read the same ones over and over again? Do not get me wrong, I have nothing against somebody being popular.

The thing that gets me is that the way you make a buck these days is you just milk the most popular A-list blogger you can find. I challenge somebody out there to create me a Web site where I can find new voices, not the same old tired posts I see everywhere else.

Let us lighten the load on the blogebrities for a little while and invest our time and eyeballs with somebody new. Who know? You might even like it.

Widgetbox

I just got accepted into the Widgetbox beta, and I have to say from what I have seen thus far, it is pretty slick. It makes it painless to add a number of different widgets to your blog. The only area where it has a problem is the number of widgets available. I would like to use a few, but none of the ones they have really tickle my fancy. I’m sure that will be a problem solved over time though.
