Helping to Build a Great Resource

When leaving Lockergnome and mainly the web developer newsletter, I was sad to see it go. Now though I am excited to drive the working and dedication to a new project – helping to build up Lunarpages Lunartics blog. This blog is the official blog of Lunarpages, and I think I have done some good things for it.

Covering topics like learning the basics of HTML might be shunned some places, but due to the nature of being a helpful resource for both hosting experts and novices, I have a better and bigger chance to write for a wider range of subjects.

Now don’t get me wrong – I highly doubt I am a really huge factor either way for it’s slowly growing success, I am just happy to be along for the ride and helping people who need it.

Lunarpages customer or not, I would highly suggest subscribing to the RSS feed for Lunartics and if you have any feedback, suggestions, thoughts or anything else – you know me I am an open book and easy to get a hold of.

Spotlight: Canadian Blogging with BlueFur.com

BlueFur BloggingFor a while now I have had the idea in the back of my head to use Mitchelaneous.com as more than just a soapbox for my own ideas. I want to use it to show you (yes you, the everyday blog reader) there are good content sources outside the norm.

Sure we all love the popular web sites (or they wouldn’t be that popular) but they are not the be all or end all to all goodness that comes from the Web.

One place that continues to surprise me is the blog for BlueFur.com. Why is it a winner? I am not even a BlueFur.com customer and I still like to read it – that is how you build a successful business right there. Here is just a sample of some of the cool posts that have been done there in the past:

Gary Jones, the monster behind the magic over there, is also a brilliant guy all around I must say. I recently had a blast talking with him on my podcast over at WebHostingShow.com. So if you want to learn more about BlueFur.com that might be a good place to start:

So go subscribe to Gary’s BlueFur feed and keep up to date with what this innovative Canadian web host is doing at blog.bluefur.com.

Simple Hosting Links, News, Resources

Hosting HooplaFeeling like I should go touch up a few older projects of mine, HostingHoopla.com has gotten a major upgrade and refocusing. Hosting Hoopla is now the best “link blog” the web hosting industry has ever seen.

Has the hosting business seen any others? Shh.. don’t steal my thunder.

I’ll be putting up links there on a day to day basis, combing through the press releases and neat web development resources to find the best of the best for all of you. With each link I pass your way I’ll give you a quick description and let you sort of know my feelings about it. I guess you could say it is a kind of extension from the Web Hosting Show podcast. Just think of it like WebHostingShow.com but without all the text and podcasts getting in the way.

Of course you can subscribe via the RSS feed or even get daily e-mail updates. Don’t forget the mobile device friendly version of the Hosting Hoopla link list as well. Many ways to take in the hosting goodness.

Feel free to let me know what you like, what you don’t like, what you need and what you want. I am totally open to suggestions, just send them my way.

Proud of Lunarpages Blog

Over the past few weeks, it really has been an hour to be a small part of the Lunarpages team.

I am really happy with the way their blog is shapping up as well. Once just a place for their “master of marketing” Amy Armitage, it is now quickly becoming one of my favorite places to read (and write!). This goes way beyond just being a blog for a Web hosting company. They are putting together one heck of a writing team – and it shows.

Ugly Design No More!

newlook.jpg

After hearing complaints about people thinking the old Web site design was ugly, I decided to tinker for a little with the layout last night and here is what I came up with. It is a little better looking, but still very readable. I will probably continue to tweak it when I have a few free minutes here and there for the next few days. Leave me your thoughts and let me know what you think of it.

Top 5 Web Hosting Industry Blogs

I have been maybe the loudest voice when it comes to Web hosts and Web hosting related services needing to blog, and it sounds like finally somebody has been listening. A year or two ago when I started talking about this, there was maybe two or three Web hosting blogs out there. Now the numbers have grown.

The numbers have grown enough to where I can actually do a top five list without feeling like I have to make half of them up.

The WHIR Blogs

OK, so maybe this isn’t just one blog – but I am going to sum them all up together, because they do give you the nice option of subscribing to all of them at once if you would like. Now what is so great about The WHIR’s Blog?

Well they give you a lot of interesting voices and views from the Web hosting industry. They have some voices from one side and other voices from another. The thing some people don’t understand is Web hosting is a really big tent – and the WHIR Blogs try to fit a lot of the industry biggest spots under their feed.

Amy’s Blog

Amy Armitage (from Lunarpages.com) has a nice blog that I would say is the closest thing to a professional blog Lunarpages has got.

I like the feeling of the whole thing. It has a much more personal feeling to it, and shows that Web hosting doesn’t always have to be about servers and uptime. You can create interesting Web hosting content without feeling like you are putting folks to sleep.

FastServers’s Blog

The folks over at FastServers.net also have a blog for both industry insiders and folks interested in the world of Web hosting to check out and read. Now the content here usually is a little more business focused, but that is OK too.

It gives you a secret window to look through when it comes to running an impressive data center. With multiple authors and interesting content – there is a lot of promise for this company blog to do great things in the future.

Inside ISPCON and HostingCon Blog

The two most important conferences inside of the Web hosting industry both have blogs as well. Now some of the content might be more relative the closer you get to the events, but there is more than enough content to read through and keep you happy all year long.

Both also have podcast content of the conferences as well.

Now sure, that isn’t all of the Web hosting blogs out there – but most of the best ones have been listed. If you need some more hosting content in your RSS reader, check out these Web sites as well. If you have one I didn’t mention, please leave a comment and I will add it to the list.

Oh yeah, just as a final reminder – you can’t forget about one of the best blogs/podcasts out there today for the Web hosting industry, the Web Hosting Show!
