Learn More About Domain Name Jargon

I did my first two-part podcast series this week on the Web Hosting Show.  This week, in podcast 180 and 181 we covered some of the most confusing domain name terms you might hear being tossed around inside of the web hosting industry.

On podcast #180 covered these specific domain terms:

On podcast #181 rounded things out with these domain terms:

I would highly recommend checking out both podcasts, as I think they will be a handy addition to have for anybody who is wanting to learn more about the domain name jargon that is being tossed around.

For more web hosting podcast fun, talk, help, interviews and more check out webhostingshow.com.  Speaking of which, that project of mine is about to hit the 4 year anniversary mark – so that alone should let you know there is a ton of information posted over there for the newbies all the way to the gurus out there in the web development world.

10 Free Ways to Search for Files Online

Need to find a file fast?  Over the years, I have collected some of the best (and maybe not so best) free file search web sites out there.  Here are the ten best resources to search for a file online.

What About Google? Of course, the ultimate alternative to all of these would be doing a file search in Google.  How do you do so?  Well, just start any Google search with filetype: and then put in the file type you want to search for.  Taken from Google, here are the most popular file formats you may want to search for using this trick.

  • Adobe Portable Document Format (pdf)
  • Adobe PostScript (ps)
  • Lotus 1-2-3 (wk1, wk2, wk3, wk4, wk5, wki, wks, wku)
  • Lotus WordPro (lwp)
  • MacWrite (mw)
  • Microsoft Excel (xls)
  • Microsoft PowerPoint (ppt)
  • Microsoft Word (doc)
  • Microsoft Works (wks, wps, wdb)
  • Microsoft Write (wri)
  • Rich Text Format (rtf)
  • Shockwave Flash (swf)
  • Text (ans, txt)

So if you are looking for a .txt file about hosting, you would type into the Google search box…

filetype:txt hosting

So, if you are searching for a file on the web – you might try these resources or this neat Google tip.  Either way should get the job done for you.

Much Love for the Hosting Industry Organization

hosting-group

I am really becoming a big fan of the Hosting Industry group on LinkedIn.  When it was first launched, I mentioned it on the Web Hosting Show podcast, however – I had no idea how useful it would be till now, a few months down the road.  Here recently, I used it to get a few guests lined up for future interviews on the Web Hosting Show – and thus far the response has been really superb.

As much as I like the mix of hosting customers and web hosting professionals meeting in one place, the highlight of this group on LinkedIn is that thus far it is only people who are working in the hosting industry in one way, shape or form.  With that said, it kind of blocks out some of the discussions, such as “Is ‘X’ web host any good?” or “Stay away from ‘X’ as a Web Host, they just robbed me!” and well – you get the idea.

If you want to learn more about the Hosting Industry Organization and the LinkedIn group that is related to it, be sure to check out HostingIndustryOrg.com.

Mitch in Print During 2008

This year, I set a new record for myself – I made it into print four times!  Now in this digital era, that might not seem like much.  Heck, it might even be a step backwards.  However, holding a magazine with an article you have written inside it still something that gets me all excited.

Here are all the issues of Ping! Zine that I have made an appearance in this year:

+ Download Issue 26 of Ping! Zine (.pdf)

+ Download Issue 27 of Ping! Zine (.pdf)

+ Download Issue 28 of Ping! Zine (.pdf)

+ Download Issue 30 of Ping! Zine (.pdf)

Hopefully they’ll have me back next year too.  If you have never heard of Ping! Zine before, it is a web hosting magazine for web hosting professionals and fans.  One of the two biggest out there in the hosting industry to date.

A Look Inside Hosting Bookmarks

hosting-bookmarks Since I am from the web hosting world and industry, HostingBookmarks.com is a favorite stop of mine.  It is a digg-like social news site for the web hosting elite.  At the helm of this project is Dimitar Avramov, the well known web hosting blogger.  I recently had the chance to pick his brain to take a deeper look at HostingBookmarks.com and some other projects of his.

What made you want to organize and create HostingBookmarks.com?

Let me first say “Thank you Mitch” for the opportunity to speak to one of the finest audiences in hosting industry – yours. So, what made me to create HB… well, to be honest I’ve seen an empty niche and asked myself “Why don’t you create a web site with reference to web hosting related content”. I had two options – to develop branded software or to use any Open source application. The first would take much time so I find Pligg used it to create Hosting Bookmarks. I maintain the web site much-more as a hobby than to profit from it.

How has the success been since your launch?

There aren’t too many people who are willing to contribute. There are five to ten people who are looking to bookmark quality content. Others try to spam or mostly to do promote own content which in most cases is far from web hosting. They get banned. Up to date the web site refers to more that 3,000 quality articles related to web hosting.

New Web Hosting Show Theme Suggestions?

images I have been looking for a new theme to use for my podcast, the Web Hosting Show.   I have been using the same awesome theme (which I still have much love for) but after so many years, I am getting the itch to try something new.  Really want something with a little less techno beat and something more “rock” related.  Think I have narrowed it down to these two choices:

Which one do you like more?  Found them both at PremiumBeat.com, which I am really looking forward to seeing how well working with them will be.  Thus far, for the budget podcaster – they seem to have the cheapest deals for royalty free music.
