Garfield Without Garfield is Funnier

Who doesn’t love the American classic, Garfield? Sure I still love the regular comics, but I do have to say they are much funnier without Garfield. Somebody has gone though the effort to remove that fat cat from a ton of old comics. What you are left with is John going from a guy with a cat to a guy who is a bit schizophrenic.

14 Guru Networking Tools

Here are some of the best networking tools on the Web these days:

  1. Network-Tools.com – Ugly interface but a little something for every network tool loving freak.
  2. Pingdom Tools – The best looking set of network tools, ping, traceroute and page loading tools included.
  3. DNS Goodies – Lots of goodies here to love from whois, ip check, ping and more.
  4. Traceroute.org – Need to do a traceroute from more than one location? The interface is horrible but the info is handy.
  5. DNS Stuff – Another list of your generic domain name tools. Also has a paid service for more perks and choices.
  6. My Nameserver – Tons of DNS related lookup tools here. Also good to look up abuse, domain name worth and more.
  7. DNS Tools – Ping, traceroute, whois and more. I really like the fact you can “search for all” here too.
  8. DomainTools.com – Probably my all time favorite, DomainTools.com has everything you could want under the sun.
  9. Ajax DNS – Look up your DNS info in a crazy cool ajax powered interface. Not just eye candy here though, good all around resource.
  10. IP Tools – Another “we do everything” network tool web site. Dozens of search boxes with dozens of tools.
  11. Internet Tools – A handful of Internet query tools so you can do quick searches for things such as various whois searches.
  12. Ajax DNS Bench – Drop and give me 20! 6 ajax powered DNS tools here to pick from.
  13. My IP Neighbors – Now you can use this site to do a reverse DNS search to find out who else is on your server.
  14. Who is Hosting This – Find out the host or server that a domain name is using. Quick and effective (for nosey people only).

Now I wouldn’t recommend trying to use all of these, as many of them preform the same functions. Find the ones that work best for you, and next time you need to do a ping, traceroute or whois search you should be more than ready for the job.

Best of? Dual Monitor Wallpapers

Figuring out how to stretch my desktop wallpaper from one monitor all the way across to the next was one of those tasks I felt stupider about after words, because it is so simple. The secret to it all is to find a really long and large wallpaper and then set it to “tile” in your wallpaper preferences.

I can’t tell you how long I searched to figure that one out, so consider it a freebie from me to you. Now that I have one 22 inch (widescreen) monitor and one 19 inch monitor side by side I had to find some cool wallpaper to tickly my desktop fancy.

DeviantArt saves my day yet again! They have a slew of widescreen wallpapers to pick from, and here are a few of my favorites.

Retro World - Widescreen Wallpaper

Lucid Vertices - Dual Screen Wallpaper

Know of any other resources that have really wide wallpaper? They seem to be few and far between but they are out there.

Poking Holes in Start Pages with Pageflakes’ CEO

PageflakesYour start page says a lot about you. Do you like tons of information flying your way – or do you like to keep it short and simple? I recently got the chance to have a quick chat with one of the leaders in the start page arena Dan Cohen, CEO of Pageflakes. From taking the start page idea of out Pageflakes to what his favorite pagecasts are – I tried to cover it all with minimal fluff.

How important is user feedback and experiences (good and bad) when it comes to the Pageflakes product?

Dan: It’s extremely important and we have ongoing dialogues with our users through the blog and support forum. We monitor this full time and read & respond to every email. Our product plans include user requested information by way of reviews and feedback. We always have a representative from customer services support team involved in our product sessions.

This is to not only know how our site is produced & written, understanding sessions etc but also to represent the user base and their comments/suggestions into our future plans. They aggregate the most popular requests and common denominator feedback so we acknowledge this as paramount in our product plans. Ongoing dialogue internally and with our users are taken extremely seriously into our product design development strategies.

Start pages have a history of being something that people spend five minutes on, get caught up on whatever they want to watch – clocks or kitten saying funny things. Why should somebody invest the time to spend more time with Pageflakes?

Dan: A great number of users spend more time on Pageflakes than email and social networking sites. The old generation of personalize pages i.e. my Yahoo would result in people clicking for a moment and then visiting another site. But the old RSS information was sports, news and stocks related so if the user wanted to read more, they’d click through or venture to other websites.

With Pageflakes, users can check bank balances, email, network, visit social networking flakes so the interactive elements on Pageflakes is richer and includes flakes that users couldn’t do before. We are revolutionizing what people are doing on the Web. Technology has changed and Pageflakes is more of an engaging experience by definition to keep users on the page longer. They are learning and digging deeper into topics individually and interacting with other like minded individuals.

Open Google Notebook in Firefox Sidebar

I like using Google’s Notebook feature but the extension they give you is a little lacking. I think it is too small and doesn’t allow me to open and shut it very quickly. What’s the solution? Well I took the Google personalized homepage widget for Google Notebook and added it to the sidebar of Firefox.

Google Notebook in Firefox Sidebar

This is much like the “Add Google Talk to the Firefox Sidebar” trick that was so popular a few weeks back.

  1. Create a new bookmark (right-click and select “Bookmark this link…”) for this address:

    http://www.google.com/notebook/ig?hl=__MSG_locale__

  2. Right-click on that bookmark and select “Properties”.
  3. Check the box that says, “Load this bookmark in sidebar” and you are good to go! It isn’t exactly rocket science so everybody should be able to enjoy this one.

Now you have a full note taking application to work with in your sidebar and it beats that tiny default extension Google provides you any day of the week.

Don’t miss out on any more geek candy!
