As I have learned, producing popular content on YouTube that people want to watch is no easy task. It takes a lot of planning, a lot of hard work and maybe even just some luck. To learn more, I thought I would turn to one of my personal favorite YouTube “Let’s Play” content producers out there, VintageBeef. With over 64,000 subscribers, VintageBeef has been able to build a popular brand that people really seem to enjoy.
I got a chance to ask VintageBeef a few questions about Minecraft and content production on YouTube, here are his answers:
In your opinion, what makes a video interesting or fun to watch?
I think what makes a good video is the level of enjoyment that the commentator has while making it. I find that I can tell when something is forced and when it isn’t. I would much rather watch someone with bad video and audio quality who enjoys what he is doing than someone with 1080p and surround sound videos who is bored and uninterested.
On YouTube (or out of other LPers) who has been your biggest inspiration and why?
My biggest inspiration has been Guude. The fact that he built his channel to be what it is from the ground up and gathered all these great people to play together on one server is amazing.
Is popularity on YouTube luck? skill or a mixture of both?
It is definitely a mixture of both. There are a lot of skilled people out there making videos who just haven’t been noticed yet. And in a place where there are so many Minecraft, or even gaming videos in general, you do need that extra bit of luck to get noticed. Having said that though, if a person lacks the skill to be a good commentator, then he/she will not get very far even if they do get lucky.
When you are creating new videos, how do you decide what to do when? As far as you’ll work on the castle today, go mining, maybe pull a prank on somebody?
I always try to switch things up. I will rarely ever do similar videos more than twice in a row. So as far as picking what to do in a video goes, that all depends on what I did the last couple videos.
Why do you think let’s play series based around Minecraft have gotten so popular?
I think that Minecraft “Let’s Plays” have gotten so popular because the game is just an interesting game. It really is one of the very few games where a person can hop into it and make the game what they want it to be. You can be an adventurer, a fighter, a builder, an engineer… the possibilities are endless. And because of this, people want to see how others play it, and what route they take or what decisions they make.
