EMFF – Easily the Best Audio Player via Flash

The Easy Musicplayer For Flash, or otherwise known as EMFF, is in my opinion easily the best free audio player, built in flash.  I have been using it to provide a player on up to six of my latest shows on webhostingshow.com.

What makes it so cool?  Well, for one, it does not take a college degree to get started with.  The creator of the player gives a simple four steps to get it up and running:

  1. Download and extract the latest ZIP file from here
  2. Use the Code Generator to create your own HTML code
  3. Copy the appropriate skin file (e.g. “emff_standard.swf”) from the “skins” directory to your website directory
  4. Have fun!

It does not lack in the features department either.  It provides volume control, keyboard shortcuts, play, stop, pause, previous, next, Show information about a track and much more.

So if you have looked at my past list of the 5 best flash podcast players, and they didn’t do it for you, give EMFF a chance at playing your MP3s.

Listhings is Your Virtual Stack of Sticky Notes

Listhings virtual sticky notes in action!

Want a new place to store your virtual notes to yourself?  Listhings looks to be your personal dashboard for storing notes.  The service is very easy to use and understand.  Click “Add” to add new notes and… yeah, that is about it.

Here is a little more about the web site application from the developers:

Back in the days, people used fridges to stick notes to. Nowadays, people are green and don’t waste paper on notes. Instead, they use Listhings – the free online tool for storing notes. You can use Listhings to store ToDo’s, titles of great songs, phone numbers, shopping lists, you-name-it. It’s very simple and straightforward. Everyone should be able to use it from any web browser.

It is a neat idea, and I am looking forward to seeing what they do with the project in the future.  If your looking for a place to store your notes, give Listhings a shot.

Best Tower Defense Games

I like to think things out and strategize plans of attack, so the desktop defense games are really right up my proverbial ally, because they allow me to do just that – without the need of actually raising my own army of oppressed chickens.  Time to defend your virtual plot of land with some of the best tower defense games on the Web.  Here are some of the games I would consider to be the best of the tower defense category of games right now.

Stickmen want their revenge!Revenge of the Stickmen

Revenge of the Stickmen, unlike other desktop tower defense games, actually has a ‘bit of a plot.  For eons stickmen have been enslaved in computers; forced to do terrible things… very terrible things for their evil creators. They have had their fill of slavery – a rebellion has commenced. They will no longer sit still while their brethren are being chopped, smashed, mutilated, burnt and tortured. ENOUGH is ENOUGH!

Defend your tower!Desktop Tower Defense

The original, and still the best, will have you addicted for hours upon end as you try to strategize the best way to defend your little area of the desktop.  You also have several different versions of the game to choose from.  You can play Desktop TD Pro, Desktop TD 1.5, Desktop TD 1.2, and Desktop TD 1.0.

Kill the printers! Onslaught

This award winning masterpiece of a flash game should keep you occupied too.  The object here, as with our other two, is to pit your wits against a never ending stream of bad guys coming at you.  Never thought that printer icons could be so scary!

Which is YOUR Favorite? Now that I have shared with you my three favorite tower defense games, it is your turn.  Do you have any other good favorites that didn’t make it onto the list?

The Rise and Fall of Geocities

Where did Geocities go wrong?

Over on the Web Hosting Show, I have been talking all week long about our good ‘ol departed friend, Geocities.  After looking back at what went wrong, and what was or was not done, one thing can be said for certain.  The main reason Geocities fell is because they failed to innovate.

If you too want to follow the rise and fall of this free hosting giant, check out these articles and be sure to download the accompanying podcast too.

A Lesson in Geocities History

You might have heard of Geocities in passing, however if you are new to the Web, or the way things once were – all this concern about a free hosting service might be a little confusing.  So I figured, what better way to pay tribute to the web host that once was, than to give you a history lesson in Geocities.

Saving Geocities for Future Generations

In an effort to save the content that was on Geocities, a group calling themselves the Archive Team is working hard to save the Web that way it once was.  Time to pack away the animated gifs, blinking text, and web rings into their own individual boxes, so that someday we can look back what was once considered, “cool” in web site design.

Alternatives to Geocities Hosting

With the word that Geocities would be closing, “sometime in 2009” many of the Geocities users are looking for other places to host their content.  Even though Geocities is closing the door on it’s free hosting, there are still many free hosting alternatives to Geocities.

Why Did Geocities Fail?

The reasons as to why Yahoo! dropped the ball with Geocities will be a great debate over the next year or so.  However, I feel the main reason Geocities ended up fading off into the sunset is that Yahoo failed to evolve the product into what people needed.

For more web hosting podcasts, interviews, tips and more be sure to check out WebHostingShow.com.  It is tons of fun!
