AutoHotkey – Create Your First Quick Response?

autohotkey-help I really love AutoHotkey but some people are still confused as to how you can get it to work for you.  After my article about it in the recent issue of Ping! Zine I have had a few questions so I thought I would touch on the basics here for all to see.  Here are the basics you need once you get it installed.

Right click on the desktop, select “New” and then “AutoHotkey Script”.

On the desktop icon created for the script, I want you to right-click on it and select “Edit Script”.  This should open up a Notepad window with your empty script inside.  Go to the Notepad window, hit enter twice so you are on a new line.  Next I want you to type in the following:

:o c:testscript::

Now this is telling your script that the word “testscript” is your keyword to type to get your longer response to launch.  Next add some text to the end of that – such as…

:o c:testscript::Thank you for your suggestion.  I really appreciate it.

Now that you got that text typed into there I want you to go to “File” and then “Save” to save your script.  Now lets go back to the desktop where you created your quick response, and double click the icon created on your desktop to launch it.  You should see the green box with the “H” in it in your taskbar now.

Now go into any text field, e-mail, search box, anything and type in testscript then hit enter after typing it in.  Presto – you just saved yourself a few more seconds in your day.  You can now quickly type out phrases you use multiple times in the day and save your keyboard (and fingers) from all that extra work.

Become a Blogging Success (advice from the CyberNet)

One of the popular blogs out there that I really enjoy a lot is CyberNet. They always have fresh content, good reviews and reminds me of a younger and more influential Lockergnome.com. The minds behind the project – Ryan and Ashley are brilliant at what they do and have had a lot of success along the way. Then it came to me, who better to ask for advice about taking your blog to the next level than them? E-mails were sent, virtual handshakes were made and a conversation was had…

When did you know it was time to really put your all into CyberNet and try to do your best at making some money with it? Was it your goal from day one or was it something that you decided to do later on down the road?

Ryan: Our goal from day one wasn’t to make money; CyberNet was originally started as a hobby. Our goal was to do our best and put our all into it, and to write great content and tutorials that you wouldn’t find on many other sites out there. I guess you could say we were focused on quality and not quantity. We were actually surprised at the time it took to maintain a site with quality articles and we realized if we wanted to continue to provide the content, we had to find a way to make money with it. It wasn’t until about a year ago that Ashley and I both started working on CyberNet full-time.

Out of all of the money making methods out there today, which has been the most and least successful for you thus far?

CushyCMS = Only the Fun Parts of Content Management

The main problem with content management systems (or sometimes referred to as CMS) is that many people find them complicated, too technical and way over their head.  If your searching for an “every man” way of managing your content take a look at CushyCMS. A hosted CMS solution.

cushy-cms-screenshot

Hosted by them and edited on their servers, you can quickly create your content, with no worry about installing software or learning any programming languages. They say that your final product will be a standards compliant (and search engine friendly) masterpiece that can not be beat.

CushyCMS promises to be the easiest way to get a web site up in no time at all. I do have to say it is an interesting idea (and I wish them all the best). Curious to see how many people will turn to these types of solutions over your normal web hosting account and Joomla install for example?

Easily Add Related Posts to WordPress Install?

best-related-posts The WordPress Related Posts plugin might be the best of the bunch.  I have added this to a few of my various projects and online homes and I have to say I am really impressed that all you do is pretty much install, fill in some options and you are done.

Once activated, this plugin will automatically slip related links after all of your stories, articles and posts on your WordPress powered blog.

To your right here you can see what the admin interface looks like for the plugin.  Pretty simple stuff.  If you wish it will also add related posts to your RSS feed too.

If you want a simple way to keep people on your web site a little longer – related links to other stories they might be interested in is one of the best ways to do it.  This WordPress Releated Posts plugin is hands down the easiest of the many out there that do this sort of thing to get up and running.  On the web page for it, it says it is only for WordPress 2.3, but it has given me no problems at all on WordPress 2.5.

Voice Training Tips for Podcasters

I have more talent in my big toe...

Searching the Web for ways to make myself sound better when recording I ran into a lot of voice training tips for speaking and singing. Funny enough, some of the singing ones work too to help you sound better when recording a podcast (such as the Web Hosting Show).

Here are a few of my favorites:

Yawn three times before you start talking. Now I am sure there is some science behind this I don’t understand. I do have to say though it helps a lot, especially if you think you sound a ‘bit nasally when you record your voice (think Fran Drescher).

Hum to yourself for a few minutes, without having your top teeth touching your bottom teeth. Try going up and down in pitch and see if you can find the right tone for your voice that way. Try to stay natural though, or you’ll sound like your doing a bad Barry White impression.

Last voice training tip that I think a lot of people would get use out of would be to practice. Record yourself talking and see what you like or don’t like. Maybe you need to speak a little lower? Maybe you need to speak a little louder? Maybe you need to speak a little slower? Any long time listeners to my podcast can tell you I can get easily excitable – but I have been trying to do a better job at telling myself inside my head to sloow dooowwwn.

Make a Mix Tape

mix-tape Want an easy way to create a simple mp3 mix tape for others?  For those of you who may not know, mix tapes we’re what people passed around before all this music downloading and fancy mp3 stuff took place.

Now it has a new Web 2.0 look and feel with Muxtape.  I have yet to create one of my own (might make a best of the Web Hosting Show?) but after listening to a few of the others this is a great way to get a sample of a lot of different music.

Here are a few samples I picked at random:

Give it a shot, and if you have created a mix tape of your own feel free to share!

Legend of Zelda Movie Trailer?

Out of all the April Fools Day jokes that made their way around yesterday, only one made me really sad. After watching the trailer that IGN put out for the “New Legend of Zelda” movie I was so excited – but damn, I had to look up at the calender and be reminded of the fact that I too was made a fool.

I want it to be real! Just in case you missed it, I had some fun on Firefox Facts for April Fools Day too. Of course by some of the comments, I am not sure that some people checked their calendars at all yesterday.

Goodbye Web Hosting World

Today I’ve decided I will no longer be the self proclaimed “media rock star of the web hosting world“. After thinking about it long and hard – I’ve decided to become a real rock star. Plans are already in place for me to give up on web hosting and data centers to tour with a band of midgets that some-what look like Kiss (but aren’t due to copyright issues).

Mini Kiss?

I want to thank those in the hosting world that welcomed me in with open arms. Now I look forward to do the same with my new band mates, I’ll just have to work with shorter arms this time around. Look for us touring in a location near you!
