DreamHost Over Charge You Yet?

Dreamhost’s Nightmare

Looks like the DreamHost people fell asleep yet again at the wheel. What they describe as a “teensy eensy weensy little billing error” turned out to be $400 to $9,000 in overcharging their customers. Feedback is coming in quickly with the story being posted all over the ‘net.

Usually finding themselves being bullied by DreamHost themselves, Lunarpages has rolled out a great deal for any DreamHost people wanting to switch.

Use code DHRefugees to receive $40 off hosting with Lunarpages and we will also buy out the remainder of your contract with DreamHost! (Up to 9 months!)

Here is more about the fiasco from the Web:

Not a good time to be a customer of DreamHost, that is for sure. Also as a point worth mentioning for all fairness, I am a contracted worker for LP… but anybody who has seen my publicly viewable resume and mention of if here time and time again can see that. :)

Update: Looks like by watching the DreamHost blog they have posted a few more posts after the one that was heard around he Web. Seems like they are doing a better job the second time around discussing this issue than the first. I’ll give them two thumbs up for that.

Update #2: No, I was not bullied by anybody to update this post (removing some of the negativity) - I took in feedback, and adjusted my thoughts, it happens. :) As for those who want to try to drag me into a public fight over one of my employers - no thanks, got more important things to worry about than people trying to make a name out of themselves by trying to shoot me down.  Thanks for reading!

Comments and Feedback

Man this really sucks but thanks for the heads up about Lunarpages. I think I looked them over once before but decided against it. Maybe I made the wrong choice? Know where we can complain?

Just saw this over on the WHT thread and thought you might think it was interesting:

If they billed 7.5 million at a 3% merchant rate this mistake will cost them $225,000 in merchant fees. Of course you would need to factor in somewhere around 2.5million in papal that’s unaffected and about another 20% for cards that declined.

Also after some of the stuff they left posted about you on their blog, I don’t blame you for pushing Lunarpages offer. Definately a bunch of kids over there.

Hey Mark, yeah - I ain’t even going to worry about previous comments about me I just want to do my best to report the facts, my opinion and help out those poor customers. I know if I saw that on my credit card, I’d be pretty mad. “Whoopsie” just ain’t cutting it in that regard.

I got charged twice for some reason. But I just got an email from Dreamhost saying they’ve refunded me the money. Strange.

You might want to add that they have refunded the over charges and are going to be paying any fees people incurred during their mess up, bank fees, over draft charges, ect.

Sure, they could have posted with a bit more tack but the facts remain…

1) They messed up
2) They are fixing it
3) They are paying the fees they caused.

If you are going to report the facts, you may want to report ALL of them. Not just a choice few.

More than happy to Jenn, hence the reason why I included all the links so we could all keep up with the story.

Lunarpages vs Dreamhost = Coke vs Pepsi?

No, more like Coke vs Coke II.

If you are a victim of this.. I highly recommend you get ahold of your bank and get this disputed.

DreamHost is still charging people three days after they claimed to fully refund their money.

Nor has any banks seen any activity besides the collecting of their money.

What Do You Think?
