Going for a BlogRush

BlogRushAnybody who knows me well knows I am not usually a sucker for the “get traffic now” schemes out there. Then again, maybe I am missing out on a good deal? Just too soon to tell right now. I want to be proved wrong but I have a feeling I’m going to be disappointed. So while enjoying my temporary sucker status here – I decided to go ahead and give BlogRush a shot.

As you can see – I have added the sidebar widget on my web site and so far I haven’t noticed a darn person leaking in via this deal. It could be too soon to tell though if this is going to be a winer or a loser. Continue Reading →

Mitchelaneous’s New Skin

Change is good every so often, right? I have just finished doing some spring late summer cleaning on Mitchelaneous. Just mainly wanted to give things a new look for the next few months and clean up some of the crap on the layout I wasn’t really that excited about anymore.

New Mitchelaneous Skin

So what do you think? Like it? Hate it? Seems like I am cleaning up a web project a week! Last week I did the Web Hosting Show, this week it was Mitchelaneous – next week to be Firefox Facts?

My Only Beef With Ubuntu

I have been trying out Ubuntu via Wubi for a while now, and I can honestly say I have only had one big beef with it during my tinkering. There is no good one, two three step process for editing the monitor settings. Now that might be more a problem with my computer than the OS itself – but it has kept me from using Ubuntu full time.

Trying to search around and find a way to edit the brightness and contrast to where things don’t look ultra-bright has been a pain. If that could be made into an easier process – then sure I might give it a permanent chance. Other than that, it does seem to fit all the rest of my needs.

Of course there is probably some Ubuntu gurus out there having a good laugh at the fact I can’t figure this situation out. Afraid this old HP desktop computer though might just not have it in it to go too open source.

Also there are a lot of different Linux flavors I haven’t gotten to try out yet either, so maybe I can find one that fits me just right.

ShinRa House Blu WordPress Theme

ShinRa House WordPress Theme

I found another great looking WordPress theme that I just had to share with the masses, while I had the masses attention. ShinRa House Blu has that type of “Web 2.0″ look but still doesn’t bug me with being too simple or large. Two thumbs up for usability, design and all around awesomeness.

How to Recruit Guest Writers

Always willing to try a new thing, if you have not noticed lately we have had a number of great guest postings here on Mitchelaneous. From copywriting to Ubuntu – I think it has been nice to see a few new posts from another opinion here on the web site. Apparently so do you – because the number of page views over the past few weeks has gone up.

Want to get a few guest writers on your own web site? Here is something to keep in mind.

Make sure you go after your friends first. If anybody will be willing to help you out, it will be the people that know you best. After that – recruitment might move into the realm of blogs you like to read or people who like to read your blog. All I did was post the offer or deal out there, and I have been more than happy with the result. Continue Reading →

Do Your Copywriting Right!

Copywriting TipsI am often asked by business owners, entrepreneurs, consultants, coaches and others for copywriting tips. Here are my top six:

1. It is actually about them, not you.
Don’t write for yourself, your college professor or your next-door neighbor. It’s not about your style, your preferences or your own “voice.” It’s not even about what you like or want. It’s about the audience, the product/ service and, ultimately, about selling.

2. Be eye-friendly.
Nothing tires the eyes like big blocks of endless black and white text. So include bullets, sun-heads, questions, sidebars and headlines to break your copy into manageable, scannable chunks. Continue Reading →

Care to Ubuntu? Part 3

Got Ubuntu? To continue from where I left off previously, my installation of Ubuntu’s Feisty Fawn (7.04) has been full of nothing but pleasant surprises. It just works! Right out of the box, if you will. So far, the experience has been smooth. Now, like most of you out there, I was hyped to see what all I had to use that was comparable to Windows. Granted, not all applications/software/games will work on Ubuntu….yet.

But thanks to some clever people over at the Wine project, that is soon to be a thing of the past.

Applications Galore! OK, let’s see what we have here:

Word Processing

  • Windows: Word
  • Ubuntu: OpenOffice.org’s Writer

Spreadsheet

  • Windows: Excel
  • Ubuntu: OpenOffice.org’s CalcPresentation

Presentations

  • Windows: Powerpoint
  • Ubuntu: OpenOffice.org’s Impress

Spotlight: Canadian Blogging with BlueFur.com

BlueFur BloggingFor a while now I have had the idea in the back of my head to use Mitchelaneous.com as more than just a soapbox for my own ideas. I want to use it to show you (yes you, the everyday blog reader) there are good content sources outside the norm.

Sure we all love the popular web sites (or they wouldn’t be that popular) but they are not the be all or end all to all goodness that comes from the Web.

One place that continues to surprise me is the blog for BlueFur.com. Why is it a winner? I am not even a BlueFur.com customer and I still like to read it – that is how you build a successful business right there. Here is just a sample of some of the cool posts that have been done there in the past:

Gary Jones, the monster behind the magic over there, is also a brilliant guy all around I must say. I recently had a blast talking with him on my podcast over at WebHostingShow.com. So if you want to learn more about BlueFur.com that might be a good place to start:

So go subscribe to Gary’s BlueFur feed and keep up to date with what this innovative Canadian web host is doing at blog.bluefur.com.

Lost My Mind, Found a WordPress Theme!

Lose My Mind WordPress Theme

It is not that often I find a WordPress theme that impresses me – so mark this date on your calendar of choice because it is a special occasion indeed. I really like the LoseMyMind 1.0 theme. It is simple, yet not too simple. Clean, but still gives you some features. As I look towards redesigning a few of my projects, I might just have to keep this theme in mind.
