Get Ping! Zine for Free

Ping! Zine Free Subscription DealIt looks like Ping! Zine has gone from a free Web hosting magazine to a “subscription” based one. This is big news because I think at least, it means they have a chance of becoming successful enough to charge for it. For the folks out there that still want one of the best hosting magazines for free though – I have a place to send you. Lets just keep this our little secret. ;)

Interview with an Entrepreneur

When you want to know how to make it to the top of any field out there, it never hurts to read about what others have done to become successful.

There are very few places Online where you will see Web hosting personalities interviewed and it doesn’t sound like an info-mercial. Thankfully Reseller Guide is one of those few places that get right to the juicy ‘bits.

Jesse Rasch is an entrepreneur who co-founded DynamicWeb Hosting which eventually grew to become WebHosting.com and InQuent Technologies. He started the company in 1996 with the help of his partner Mike Apted. The company grew quickly and eventually entered the web hosting wholesale market by providing branded web hosting to large telecoms. In 2000 he sold 51% of the stake to AT&T for 115 million in cash! Jesse has a great blog that goes over the story of how he got started and it is a great read. Here is a quick timeline before we get to the interview.

Check out the interview Reseller Guide did with Jesse Rasch. It is a good read for anybody even slightly interested in the Web hosting business.

TV Downloads Not Perfect Yet

The ShieldOh crap, I missed The Shield!

That was my thought Wednesday morning while working. Now when you miss a TV show there are several ways you can go to see it again. I could have searched for a rerun, but that would take too long. I haven’t ever downloaded any TV shows via one of the many services out there – so I thought this would be a perfect chance to try it out.

My first thought was to go to iTunes to download it. I checked, and it was available. Where’s the problem? I don’t want to keep it on my computer, and I want to be able to re-download it. There does the iTunes idea out the Window.

Next I remembered Amazon’s Unbox service. I found The Shield listed, but they still did not have Tuesday night’s episode.

There is always the torrent way – finding a seed for it somewhere, but that was ridiculously slow. Plus, if I can get a good quality video and get it fast, I don’t mind paying for it.

My last ditch effort paid off though. I found Direct2Drive after doing a little searching, and they had what I needed. Whoo hoo! Other than needing Internet Explorer to get it going (yuck) it was not a bad experience at all.

Podcast Themes are Hard to Find

whs125×40.gifOver the past few weeks, I have been considering changing the Web Hosting Show’s theme to something different. I’m getting the itch to get something new in there – but the more I search, the luckier I consider myself that I found my first theme when I did.

It seems like no matter where I look or who I talk to there is always a catch or several catches that just scare this old country boy off. I just replied to an E-mail conversation I started with with Mark of PodcastThemes.com, letting him know I’ll probably look to go in a different direction just because of all the loopholes and agreements that must be made. I don’t blame him or anybody else for it. It is their creation and they want to make sure they get plenty of credit for it. Just seems like there should be an easier way.

I want a McDonalds for podcast themes.

I have also considered finding an independent artist that wouldn’t mind me using their song (or doing a song for me) for some free pluggage and a paycheck. The only problem with that is I would have to start listening to song after song till I found something I liked.

So this is an open offer to anybody who wants to take me up on it. Want to do a rock theme for the Web Hosting Show podcast? Let me know and I’ll do my best to make it worth your wild.

Get Rid of WordPress Comment Spam

WordPress SpamBack when this blog was on Blogware, fighting trackback and comment spam was impossible. The filtering scripts were not that good and all around, I just had to moderate by hand, which is no easy task for a popular Web site of any shape or size.

When I moved to my own hosting account with WordPress installed, my battle with spam got a heck of a lot easier.

For me, 99% of my spam and trackback spam is filtered out by the Askimet WordPress plugin. If Askimet doesn’t do it for you, or you need even more protection though – I have a few suggestions.

Spam Karma 2 – This plugin works by running all of your comments and trackbacks through a list of tests, and then grades it by “karma”. It also has a few other spam prevention tools built in as well. If Askimet wasn’t working for me, this would be my number two choice.

Comment Timeout – This neat tool allows you to turn commenting off for older posts. Chances are if they haven’t added a comment in a year, they never will. This will leave less holes for spammers to find to post their “v1agra” loving messages.

Bad Behavior – Bad Behavior is a set of PHP scripts which prevents spambots from accessing your site by analyzing their actual HTTP requests and comparing them to profiles from known spambots.

One word of caution, don’t go overboard with spam filtering or you are going to piss off your readers. If they have to jump through 20 hoops to post a comment and so that you can say you get no comment or trackback spam, you are not going to see too many new comments on your Web site.

You need to find the thin line between filtering crap and keeping comment posting easy for your readers.

Need more? Check out this list of anti-spam plugins via the WordPress Web site. The list looks a little out of date with some of the links, but should be a good place to get started at least.

Geek Certified Goes Up for Sale

Geek CertifiedWell it looks like one of my favorite Web hosting “middle man” Web sites is possibly being sold.

Geek Certified is a good support certification outfit inside of the hosting industry. The best thing that they do is moderation for support between Web hosts and Web hosting clients.

So why sell a good business? Well it looks like the reason might be because they never charged user fees to the Web hosts or hosting clients, and they can not afford to keep the service up and running.

That’s a death nail that not enough of us think about till it is too late, I’m afraid.

So what does the future look like for Geek Certified? Well, I hope it is picked up by somebody who will really do something with it. Too many hosting Web sites these days are being bought out just for the sake of saying you own the service, then it sits there and nothing is done with it.

For the companies out there that have been certified by them this might be something to keep your eye on. You want to make sure they stay fair and active – because nobody is going to want to associate themselves with the product if it goes downhill from here.

Finding Wrestling Matches on YouTube

YouTubeEvery so often, I run into a little ‘bit of time where I have nothing else to do. So where do I turn for some entertainment? Like everybody else I start typing in random phrases into YouTube and watch some uploaded content. It looks like there are a lot of wrestling matches and segments up and running on YouTube right now. Now searching for “WWE” or “WWF” might turn up much – but try typing in a wrestler’s name.

Here is a good result I got for searching for (one of my all time favorites) Chris Jericho. It is his WWE debut on RAW.

That’s not all. After searching for “WWE Ashley” I found this short video of Ashley Massaro unrevealing her “entertaining” magazine cover. ;)

You can find a lot of rare content as well. Try searching for NJPW and you will get a load of classic New Japan Pro Wrestling matches. Now how legal is all of this?

I am sure lawyers and lawsuits will get involved eventually, so enjoy it while it lasts.

5 Most Popular Hosting Podcasts

Hosting PodcastsI was looking through the archives for my podcast and a few popularity tracking scripts for WordPress and it really is neat to see what podcasts really are the most popular ones. Why keep this list secret though?

You deserve to see the most popular hosting podcasts. Heck you are the reason these are to the top choices – and the best of the best.

1. Lieberman Hosting Woes, WHIR TV 2.0 – Episode 73
Poor old Joe Lieberman just can’t catch a break. First the democrats turn against him, and then his Web site goes down. Is it the work of hackers or just bad Web hosting? Also, WHIR TV is back in the news but is it any better than it was before?

2. Assassinating Spam – Episode 100 – Episode 100
Need to know how to kill off your spam? No need to hire a hit man. I’ll let you know how to do it with your own SpamAssassin. Also customer service tips, often asked question in hosting and some of the latest headlines from inside the industry.

3. Ads, Girls and Xbox Giveaways – Episode 99
Girls, games and marketing – if this Web Hosting Show episode hasn’t gotten you at least a little excited about the fun you have in store for you, I don’t think anything will. From big boobed advertising ploys to getting yourself a free Xbox 360 just for reviewing your Web host you can see there is a lot in store for this episode of the Web Hosting Show.

4. What is Dedicated Web Hosting? – Podcast 77
The shared Web hosting that we all see from day to day isn’t the only type of Web hosting plan out there. You also have the dedicated Web hosting plans. Now you have heard the name before, but do you know what it really means?

5. Ecommerce Web Hosting Guide – Episode 93
You know Joe right? Joe lives down the street from you and runs a little comic book store downtown. Joe doesn’t know much about the Internet but he does know that he would like to expand his business. What should Joe do? Joe should look into getting into ecommerce.

Do you have a favorite episode of the Web Hosting Show podcast? If so – leave a comment and tell us what it is!

Mitch’s Web Writing Stats

crazy-mitch-small.jpgI have spend some time here lately trying to figure out exactly how much I write in the span of a year. If you follow any of my other projects or places that I post you probably know I do an awful lot. What is my digital footprint? Well here are some estimates by project:

Lockergnome’s Web Developers
20 Articles in a Month / 6,000 Words in a Month
I would estimate that I write around 300 words per article and I write five articles a week, so that ends up being around, well… a big number. Never realized I go on and on about Web development issues that much!

Lockergnome’s Windows Fanatics
8 Articles in a Month / 2,200 Words in a Month
Here I do 2 articles a week, with around 250 to 300 words per article. For argument’s sake, lets just call it 275. Loads of good freeware reviews there.

Mitchelaneous
20 Articles in a Month / 6,000 Words in a Month
On this fine Web site I do around 5 articles a week at around 300 words per article. Very similar with my numbers for Lockergnome’s Web Developers.

The Web Hosting Show
20 Articles in a Month / 7,000 Words in a Month
Sure, this is my podcast – but there are still a lot of show notes and posts to make. Here I would raise the average length per post to be around 350 per article with 5 posts per week for the hosting podcast.

Firefox Facts
20 Articles in a Month / 5,000 Words in a Month
This one might be a little lower than average since the posts are kind of simple and “quick tips”. At Firefox Facts I try to post 5 times a week and the word count comes in at around 250 per post.

Lunartics
4 Articles in a Month / 1,200 Words in a Month
This is the 1 place I write the least at. When doing my best, I try to have a least 1 post a week (even though I have missed the past 2 weeks because I have been so busy). That 1 post per week is around 300 words.

So what do the final numbers say about how much I go on and on about the topics I like to write about?

In 1 Month I Write 32,800 Words.
In 1 Month I Write 92 Articles or Posts.

In 1 Year I Write 393,600 Words.
In 1 Year I Write 1,104 Articles or Posts.

If the average number of words per page in a book is 250, and the average number of pages per book is 300 then the average book has 75,000 words. With that being said, I will write the equivalent of a little over 5 books (5.348 to be exact) in the span of 1 year. What is your digital footprint? How many books could you have written out of your blogging ways?

Productive Google Reader Tips

Google ReaderSince everybody seemed to enjoy my Get More From Google Reader Guide, I figured it was about time for a sequel. Although a lot of things were covered there, I did not get into many tips that will make Google Reader more usable. Here are a few productivity tips that should help you get through your feeds a little faster.

Expanded View Link

Google Reader Tip 1 : Use Expanded View – I like expanded view because it makes it very easy to scroll through all the feed items and speed read my way through them. No I don’t read every single item from every single feed. I quickly browse and watch for things that get my attention.

Google Reader Tip 2 : Use the “J” Button to Go From Item to Item – Now you could scroll down or use the down arrow key to slowly make your way down the list. If you want to skip down to the next entry though, all you need to do is hit the “J” key. If you want to go backwards, use the “K” key to go back to the previous post you have already viewed. (awesome keyboard photo by paolovalde via Flickr)

Wide View

Google Reader Tip 3 : Ditch the Sidebar to Get More Reading Room – To hide the sidebar that shows your lables and links, just hit the “U” key. This will give you even more room to read when you have a long list of feed entries to go through. To un-hide it, just hit the “U” key again. Get more keyboard shortcuts here.

Get New Items First

Google Reader Tip 4 : Get the New Stuff First – I don’t need to see the home page for Google Reader when I want to go catch up on my RSS feeds. Click on the link for “Settings” and then “Preferences” and find where it says “Start Page”. Here you can select what page or selection of labels you will start looking through when Google Reader starts up. I have mine set on “All Items”.

Reader Trends

Google Reader Tip 5 : Watch Your Feed Reading Trends – If you point your browser towards the Google Reader Trends link you can see a plethora of information about how you read your feeds. You can see popular tags, subscription trends, and reading trends. Seeing what time of the day you check your feeds is cool. They will give you the most popular day of the week for your feed reading ways as well. You can also see the number of posts you have read per day in the last 30 days.

Starred Items

Google Reader Tip 6 : Star Items to Save for Later – I subscribe to a lot of wallpaper related RSS feeds, so when I find one I like – I might not have time to save the wallpaper at this very moment. That is where “staring” entries in the Google Reader can be helpful. You can do so by clicking the star icon at the bottom of any entry. To view all the ones you have starred, click on the “Starred Items” link on your left sidebar.
