Web Hosts Protect Teen Model Sites?

We have all seen the headlines and heard the news stories about these teen model Web sites where kids from the ages of 13 to 17 pose in bikinis and other sick positions for the sake of “getting known”. Now we all know that these Web sites (for the most part) are for the sick and perverted that get off at the idea of looking at a little girl in her underwear.

Now I had always thought, “Well why don’t these reporters go after the folks that are hosting these Web sites?”. I didn’t think that any Web host in its right mind would want to be associated with protecting these places.

Well I was wrong.

I did a little investigative reporting myself and tracked down the Web host for an entire series of these types of Web sites. They are known as Webe Web Corp. I was not able to contact them directly, as of right now they have not returned my E-mails. So after no response from them I went up one level higher and decided to hunt down the folks that host the Web host.

That is when I found myself talking with Host.net. I sent the folks at Host.net an E-mail about the Web sites and asking them if they knew they were hosting somebody that was hosting these Web sites. They did, and this is what they told me about where they stand in all of this:

We have thoroughly investigated the content of these sites in the past and while they may contain some material that is offensive, they are legal. We appreciate your concern; however, these sites do operate within the boundaries of our AUP and are legal as far as their content offerings. Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

We neither endorse nor censor our customer’s content and we abide by the laws of the State of Florida. Should you have questions or concerns regarding the content of said sites please contact WeBeWeb as they are the content provider, we are merely the host.

I did some more homework on all of this and Host.net is right, technically this is not an illegal thing to do. While it is not illegal, a Web host should still have the right to refuse hosting to any place they do not wish to provide hosting to.

I am not a legal mastermind here (a lawyer I am not), but one would think that if you changed your acceptable use policy then you could help in getting Web sites like this off the Internet. A Web host is a private business and as a private business it should be able to refuse services to places like this.

If I was standing on a street anywhere in America and I had a 13 year old girl with me posing in sexually suggestive positions, people would say I was sick. If I was doing that and I was asking people to give me money to see more of it, I would probably be arrested on the spot. That is how the world should work.

Now if I turn around and do it Online – that makes it all OK to do? That is not right.

My Own Disclosure Policy

I think some folks might be taking this whole transparency via writing on the Web a little too far. After checking out Eric’s disclosure policy that he wrote up – I thought I would create one myself. I mean, you can never have enough bases covered, right?

Here it is, short and sweet.

I disclose that if somebody is willing to pay me money, I will be willing to take the said money because I am not an overly egotistical Internet celebrity and I do have bills to pay. As for an apology for the “noise” I might be creating, have created, or will created in the “blogosphere” you can and should let the door hit you on the way out.

If that door does hit you on your way out, I am not responsible for any injuries you might undertake while using the proverbial door.

So to translate that for everybody else – I will do what I want to do, say what I want to say and I will not be told by an advertiser or a mob of bloggers how I should act. You will just have to trust the fact that my personal ethics are keen.

Then again, if you have enough time to wonder about the ethics of my writing you need to go outside and see what daylight looks like again.

Master of Some Domains

I have been helping Matt with a few things here and there on a new project, and he was nice enough to make mention of it via Lockergnome’s IT Professionals. Here is what he had to say:

Actually, perhaps this is something that he could also do for others as a business? Not so much a tech support type of thing, rather a guy who comes along and helps out “ding-dongs” such as myself when they find themselves in a pinch. I really don’t think that at this point his schedule would permit such a thing, but I do believe that it presents an interesting idea if nothing else…

I don’t know if I could make a business around it. I just like doing favors for folks and tinkering with things here and there. It could lead into a WordPress blog about WordPress – but they will have to be put on the back burner for right now. I think I am busy enough right now as it is.

On the other hand, I can be talked into just about anything if somebody was willing to pay enough. :)

Get Helm for Free

Those wacky folks over at Web Host Automation have decided to give Helm (the control panel software they created) away for free. There is a catch though.

Web Host Automation announced Helm Lite 5 which will give users the ability to host up to five domains, providing them with all the benefits of Helm, for free. The product is ideal for small Web hosting startups. The Helm Lite 5 package gives Web hosting startups, with a small customer base, that critical piece of hosting software they need right away, for free. The product also allows a user to host five domains. From there, it is a simple process just to upgrade to the next level.

Any amateur Web hosts out there? This could be a great deal for you. Big Web hosts? Well, you already have enough money, you can go ahead and buy yours still. (link)
