SendSpace – Send Files to a Buddy

Send SpaceI have had a lot of folks asking me about free Web hosting and free file hosting alternatives out there, and I have to say I have not played with many of them.

One of them that I do see used a lot is SendSpace. The interface is pretty straight forward if you have a file to send to somebody. One thing to remember though is you are limited to 300 MB. Just type in your name and E-mail address, and the name and E-mail address of your friend and hit send.

They gain points from me on making things simple, I just wish they gave a few more options for folks who just want to send a file quickly and do not want to sign up for a service.

Get McAfee Off SiteAdvisor Button in Firefox

sa.jpgWasted space is a real pain in the butt for me.

I really like the SiteAdvisor extension for Firefox. The only problem that I have with it is that it takes up too much space on the bottom of the browser window. Now before McAfee took them over I could live with the icon.

How about now? It is just annoying. This is what inspired me to want to fix this problem. With this quick extension edit you can down size that icon and take the “McAfee” part off of it. I love SiteAdvisor but I do not need a McAfee looking back at me every time I glance down there.

If somebody wants me to do so, I can post longer instructions on how I got this done. In all reality you can replace the graphics here (just .gif files) with anything you wish. I figured ninety percent of the folks out there just want it done and don’t care how to do it on their own.

First thing you need to do is download this file.

+ Download This File! (safe.jar)

Now that you have that downloaded, search your computer for this folder:

{1650a312-02bc-40ee-977e-83f158701739}

If you have a problem finding it there, then check out this path:

C:\Documents and Settings\(user name)\AplicationData\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\(random number)\extensions\

Look in there till you find the folder for SiteAdvisor. It might take some snooping – hence the reason why I included the “find the folder” method above.

Once you have found it, open it up then go into the “chrome” folder. Now inside this folder you should see a file called safe.jar. This is the one you want to replace. Drag the safe.jar that you downloaded from me into this folder, then replace it.

Restart Firefox, and your new down sized SiteAdvisor button should be there. Want more Firefox help and tips like this? Make sure you go visit and subscribe to FirefoxFacts.com.

Congrats to SB-1 and Monica

Sean and MonicaI just got the phone call not too long ago and Sean (also known as the indy wrestling sensation, SB-1) told me his proposal to another good friend of mine Monica went off without a hitch.

After the match, he called her into the ring and then got down on one knee and asked her if she would marry him. It is one of those moments that I wish I was there for, but thankfully it will be out on DVD pretty soon. I guess that would be one of the perks of proposing to your girl friend via a live wrestling event.

I am sure SB-1 Online will have full updates through the week of all that went on last night. Both Sean and Monica are two of my best friends, so I have nothing but the best to wish them. You couldn’t find two nicer people and two people more meant for each other.

Web Hosting Resources and Links

I was looking at my list of hosting resources and I realized it has been a while since I updated it. I have no new ideas at the current time, so I figured I would open this one up to the public. Do you know of any Web sites that deserve to be there that are not there right now? If you do – let me know and I’ll get it added.

Review Me Shows Promise

Now I have touched on the topic of getting “paid to post” entries and how stupid all of this fighting back and forth has been with the ego bloggers against the regular “Joes” and “Janes” on the street. It all comes down to one simple idea. Do you want to do what you want to do or do you want to let a small group of popular bloggers dictate the “rules of blogging” to you? I picked the first choice.

This afternoon I signed up with Review Me, and in turn I am going to be getting paid $30 once this post is posted and done with. With that said, if you go through the Web site and want me to write about something it will only cost you $30 as well (looks like they bumped me up to $60). Not too bad of a price, I must say. Some people are getting up to $250 – but I don’t know who is going to really pay that much for one post. I probably could have had a higher number, but since the domain name switch a few months ago I have been building link popularity all over again.

The idea behind Review Me is simple, you sign up and they judge how much you are worth by popularity. Once that is done and you get in, advertisers will come to you and ask you to write about them. Now you do not have to post a positive review but you do have to disclose somewhere that you are doing paid posts. I think this is a nice balance and should keep the ego bloggers at bay for now.

I am looking at this as more than just another way to get some cash. That is nice and all, but I sometimes really need to find a good muse. Interesting ideas are not that easy to find so if I have people feeding me ideas and offering to pay me to write it, that is every real writer’s dream come true.

Ugly Design No More!

newlook.jpg

After hearing complaints about people thinking the old Web site design was ugly, I decided to tinker for a little with the layout last night and here is what I came up with. It is a little better looking, but still very readable. I will probably continue to tweak it when I have a few free minutes here and there for the next few days. Leave me your thoughts and let me know what you think of it.

Sick of Hosting News

The Web Hosting Finds Blog hits my feelings like hammer hitting the head of a nail when it comes to ninety percent of the Web hosting news Web sites out there today:

Like many of us, Mitch observes the dullness and bordom surrounding many web hosting news and information sites and wanted to generate some buzz and excitement around the hosting niche (I actually believe he is accomplishing this through the Web Hosting Show). Chalk up another victory for the “nerds in white buttoned up shirts and black ties,” who seem to be behind the web hosting industry. We’ll never be rid of them, it seems.

Damn you lackluster hosting nerds!

Affiliate Programs in Web Hosting

Signing up for an affiliate program with your current Web host (if they offer one) is a really easy way to make a little cash and support the Web host you like. I have always been a big fan of “word of mouth” advertising, and affiliate programs make sure you get something back in return.

For Web hosts out there you might have to pay a little here and there – but in the long run you are brining in more customers with little or no cost to you. Taking what you have made and investing in a program like this could mean more clients in the future, which means even more money to give back to your biggest affiliate partners.

For Web hosting clients this is a nice way to earn a few bucks on the side. Just about every major Web host out there today has an affiliate hosting program, so finding one shouldn’t be apart of the problem. You might not be rolling in the cash by doing this – but it is a nice way to make a little extra money on the side.

Geek Free Web Hosting

The folks over at Your Web Department are promising to deliver a “Web in a box” type service for those people out there looking for a simple and direct Web hosting solution. One quote in the news coverage I read about this story in caught my eye.

99 percent of our customers don’t care what servers we use, what operating system we run on, or where and how we provide hosting. They just want it to run and be there for them all the time. Your Web Department takes away the pain and complexity. It’s designed to allow anyone who has the ability to create, save, cut and paste to put together and maintain their own Web site easily and affordably.

I have to agree, a lot of people do not care if they are on a Linux box or a Windows box. They could care less what DNS configurations are or what the server load times tell us. So is aiming your business at the people who know least about Web hosting a good idea? I think it is. This is probably the biggest market of people out there, so Your Web Department or any other Web host out there would be silly not to reach out to them.
