Where is the Web Hosting News?

My only major complaint with the Web hosting news industry is that there isn’t one. Almost every single big source of news inside of the Web hosting industry is nothing more than a press release dump. Now I have some good friends that write these press releases, so this is nothing against them. They are playing the game along with the rest of us.

I would like to see a source come out that did real Web hosting news though and didn’t just cut and paste press releases and call it news.

I want to see people doing investigations, research and putting together facts and information. Looking around the wild and wacky world of Web hosting, these places are few and far between. Why? It is too hard, that’s why. It is cheaper to pay one guy to sit there and cut and paste than it is to hire a team of writers who can give us something a little more than just the “company line”.

So where are the real Web hosting news Web sites?

Merry Christmas, What is Thanksgiving?

It is the one big pain in the butt that we all complain about around the holiday season. It seems like the Christmas stuff comes out in the stores just a little too early for everybody.

Now I am no scrooge, but I think in a few more years Thanksgiving will probably be nothing more than a start of the Christmas holiday season. Is there a war on Christmas? Heck no! There is a war on Thanksgiving. Every year it seems to die down in importance.

Ok, I feel better now that I got that out of my system. :)

Personally, due to the wacky working schedules of my family – we will not be doing our Thanksgiving here till Saturday, so I have a little extra time to be thankful for a few other things right now.

As always I am thankful for still being at Lockergnome, it is a place that never seems to get dull because there is always something new to read or something new being done behind the scenes. I am also thankful that Lunarpages brought me on to help the Web hosting public, one confused newbie at a time.

I am thankful I have had more than 20,000 download of my eBook Firefox Facts. Also, I am thankful that you have allowed me onto your mp3 players for almost two years now via the Web Hosting Show.

Last but not least, I am thankful for all my readers (even the ones here) that follow my ramblings at all the different places that I share my views on the world.

SlanXP Visual Styles

SlanXPNow I usually love to browse through the Windows XP visual styles on Deviant Art, but lately all of them have sucked.

They are either ugly or Vista and OS X ripoffs. With that in mind, I have to say I was pretty surprised and happy to see SlanXP had been released. I have been using it this morning and I can’t find a thing hardly wrong with it. Personally I just had to change a few of the font settings – other than that it is as good as they get.

Send Your Files Via Pando

Pando File SharingNo, a Pando isn’t what you get when you cross a Panda bear with “free unlimited hosting services!”. Pando is not your normal file hosting and sharing service. So what is Pando?

Think of it as a small network peer to peer file sharing program. The idea behind it is that you download a client, get your friend to download the client, and then you can send files to each other. It isn’t exactly a hosting service but it is still a neat idea to see a company get behind.

For people who want to share photos or videos with their friends or family, this could really save a lot of time. The best thing about it all is it seems like they are fighting to become an alternative for sending large E-mail attachments.

zShare Your Files

zShare HostingStupid and cute names usually get on my nerves, but with this free hosting service, it is kind of hard to stay mad at zShare for long. Here is what they are providing.

With zSHARE you can upload files, images, videos, audio and flash for free. Simply use the upload form below and start sharing! You can also use zSHARE as your personal file storage: backup your data and protect your files.

They are advertising “free unlimited downloads” but as I have said time and time before, there is no such thing as “unlimited” in hosting. Up to 100 MB is your file limit as well, so you might find a limit there if you want to share really big files. Overall, zShare isn’t too bad and I really like the simple layout of the Web site in general.

Free File Upload Service

Files UploadI have yet another free hosting solution that I happened to stumble upon the other day. Files Upload is yet another of many doing this type of service and by now the song and dance should be one you know.

You login, upload files, get free hosting. You can upload 300 MB per file via HTTP and 1 GB per file via FTP, not too bad for a free service. How long with your uploads stay there? Well, files have a lifetime up to 6 months after last download.

I have not tried them out for myself, but they look like another great free hosting alternative for folks out there.

More Free Photo Hosting – ImageThrust

ImageThrust.comAfter writing about SendSpace the other day, somebody pointed me in the direction of ImageThrust. I like the fact that the interface looks simple and clean. Here is a little more information on them.

If you want to keep track of your uploaded images you need a free account, it just take a second to sign up and you can start uploading images directly into your account within seconds. You need to create this account before uploading any images since we cannot keep track of images that is not attached with an free account.

As you can see, they want you to create an account as well. I don’t have that big of a problem with it, as long as they give me a quick alternative for hosting photos quickly. Sometimes I don’t have time to go through a sign up, I just want to get something uploaded to show friends, family, or crazy Uncle Fred. To get an idea of what the service will look like after you have uploaded something, check out the public photo galleries.

For the most part, ImageThrust does a few things pretty well, and makes for another nice quick photo hosting alternative.

Does Google PageRank Matter?

Does anybody even care about Google PageRank anymore? I remember a few years ago it used to be all that you would see on the Web development forums out there. Everybody wanted to know how to make it better, bigger, faster, stronger.

GoogleThese days though I just don’t see that as much as I used to. It seems like I used to hound on my Web sites a little more as well. I’d watch every time the search engine went through a “Google Dance” and hopped that my numbers would go up. Maybe these days we just have too many alternatives to choose from. Sure Google is still a power player in search, but there are other ways of generating traffic. Ways that did not exist a few years ago.

So Google PageRank, where did you go? Why are you not so important to me anymore?
