Does Google PageRank Matter?

Does anybody even care about Google PageRank anymore? I remember a few years ago it used to be all that you would see on the Web development forums out there. Everybody wanted to know how to make it better, bigger, faster, stronger.

GoogleThese days though I just don’t see that as much as I used to. It seems like I used to hound on my Web sites a little more as well. I’d watch every time the search engine went through a “Google Dance” and hopped that my numbers would go up. Maybe these days we just have too many alternatives to choose from. Sure Google is still a power player in search, but there are other ways of generating traffic. Ways that did not exist a few years ago.

So Google PageRank, where did you go? Why are you not so important to me anymore?

Comments and Feedback

I think that Google PageRank largely judged pages based on the number of links pointing to a page. It didn’t take long for people to figure out that they just had to get a ton of links to be ranked well. Google filed some patents and adjusted their algorhythm to incorporate other factors to improve the quality of results. Just my take.
