Stress Relief Tips for Geeks

ying-yang.jpgWhen I have myself bogged down with too many projects, I get really stressed out. Like many of you out there, I have tried just about everything and anything to calm down and find the place where my yin is equal to my yang. Here are a few stress relief tips I have found helpful.

1. Soak your feet in a tub of warm water. For those of us who spend a lot of time working in front of the computer, you could slip a tub under your desk. Personally, I like to go to another room, because water and all those things plugged in under my desk really don’t mix too well.

2. Sticking with the water theme, go take a shower. Clearing your mind while washing yourself might sound kind of corny. It might even sound like something you would read out of a fortune cookie. I know after some of my five or six hour writing sessions, I get a lot of pleasure from just standing in the shower. That is as far as I will go there, because I know not everybody really wants the visual image of me standing in the shower.

3. Go outside and walk around for a while. Just about every morning I’ll take a break from my Online duties to go outside and walk around. This is really handy if you are trying to come up with something, and it just isn’t coming to you in front of your computer. Who knows you might see a tree limb, a blade of grass or a passing car that inspires you to create the next big thing Online.

4. Slurp yourself down a spoon full of honey. No, I am not going all Marry Poppins on you. Honey contains potassium and magnesium which will help relax the arteries and allow more blood to flow to the brain.

5. Mint tea is a must. I went through high school almost living on honey ginseng mint tea. Not really sure where the medical part comes in there to help you out.. but it works for me, so I promise you that it will work for you.

6. Get somebody to massage your neck and lower back. This one is a pretty obvious one, because these areas are where you carry a lot of your tension and stress. If you have no friends or loved ones who will do it for you – go back to my shower idea.

Have any more tips to share? How do you get rid of your stress? Leave me a comment and let us all in on your secrets of stress relief.

Simple Flash Image Viewer

Flash image viewers are becoming more and more popular these days. I ran across one today that is as good as some of the big expensive ones out there, but it is available for you for no price at all.

SimpleViewer is a easily customizable gallery viewer. I have been looking for something like this to display some of my art on a future project. This project might not be as updated as some others, so I do not need a really complicated way of posting things. I just need an easy interface that I can slap images into. SimpleViewer does just that.

Maria Kanellis Wallpaper

I create oddball things like this when I have way too much time on my hands. Then again, having a WWE diva on your desktop can’t exactly be classified as bad thing at all – not in my opinion at least.

Yahoo! Search Builder

Now I was just saying the other day that I needed a good resource for creating a personalized search engine. I think Yahoo! has delivered.

+ See Yahoo! Search Builder in Action!
+ Read About Yahoo! Search Builder on Tech Crunch!

I am looking forward to playing with this. Yahoo! has actually done a better job than Google has at re-indexing all my Web pages since I moved from Blogware to my own server space. It has been a while since I used Yahoo! as a default search engine, but it is looking pretty sweet with the search builder tossed in there.

Easy Form Generation

Looking for an easy way to generate Online forms? You know the kind that will give you a few options to fill out (such as a survey) or your thoughts and name (such as a contact page)? Go check out The Form Assembly. They make it super easy to get a form up and running in just a few minutes. The only downside to this service that I can see is that for the free version, you do have to look at ads. Other than that though, quality stuff!

Word HTML Cleaner

This is yet another handy helper to have when you are working on a Web site layout or design.

A tool that strips proprietary Microsoft tags and other cruft from Word HTML documents, leaving basic formatting intact. File sizes are greatly reduced, and the returned HTML is easier to read, revise and employ. This is intended for fairly basic styled text documents; there is no support for notes, sectioning, ‘widow’ and ‘orphan’ control, etc. Typographic quotes, proper dashes and other special characters, if they exist, will be converted to HTML entities to increase their portability among browsers and platforms. Links, tables and image references should come through fine. Everything else is stripped.

Deviant Art Redesign

For the most part, I have to say I am pretty happy with the redesign of Deviant Art. Things look much cleaner as far as interface goes. I also see they have tossed in a few RSS feeds as well. This morning I played around with updating my profile there (which I had not touched for over a year) and it all went smooth.

The only place I have a problem is when it comes to searching for images by resolution. I used to like to search for computer wallpaper there, and it was handy to cut them down to resolutions that only matched mine. Right now I don’t see a way you can get that done. Maybe one of you can point me to the right place.

Other than that one little problem, everything else is super! It makes me want to go out there and create just that much more!

Date Fighting and the WWE

I haven’t read all the facts on this yet, but the wrestling fan in me wants to lash out at yet another attempt to try to make me look like a dumb redneck that beats women. Here is all the information you need on the subject:

+ DuRant’s study on wrestling and violence
+ Media Life article

Here is what Vince McMahon himself had to say about the issue:

We regret that this seven year old junk science was re-issued. It was junk science then, and is junk science now. It took them seven years to get someone to actually read it and it hasn’t even been subjected to a peer review. There is nothing new in the study, and we think it is recycled garbage put forward by some obscure professor who finally got someone to read his paper and is trying to get his name in the media.

I totally agree.
