Roll Up to Your Title Bar – WinRoll

It isn’t very often when I really love some of the free software I review. Sure, all of it is good and all of it has it’s own time and place for being. I just don’t find myself using every single program I review every single day. Well, the times must be changing, because I am in love with WinRoll 2.0.

What does WinRoll 2.0 do? Here is what the author of the program has to say about it:

Make a window roll into its title bar, send it to the back or make it stay on top. Minimize, maximize or close all visible windows, including minimizing to the tray area. Make a window translucent on Windows 2000 or above. WinRoll is lovingly hand-crafted in 100 percent pure assembly language to give the fastest response and the smallest memory footprint. WinRoll is proudly a freeware and open source application.

As you can see, it is a tiny program that does a lot. Once you make your way to the Web site, all you need to do is download the install file and you will be on your way to a neater way to organize your desktop.

I am an organization nut. I love anything that can raise my productivity without lowering my CPU cycles. That is just one of the many benefits I have found while using WinRoll 2.0. The ability of rolling up your windows just makes sense.

Podcast Ad Feedback

This week, you should have more than enough podcasts to play catch up on. So instead of launching something else you need to listen to, I want you to give me some feedback. This time around, I’d like to know if you think I should cut back on the number of supporters per Web Hosting Show episode.

Hostingcon 2006 Audio Debate

hostingcon2006.pngWell, it looks like the head honcho of Hostingcon noticed my comments about the Hostingcon CDs being a little over priced. This is what George Roberts had to say.

Please keep in mind that the price you quoted is for the whole program on CD, which is 32 CDs. We do make individual tracks available for a lower price as well as each individual session available. For those that just want to pick up the audio for a couple sessions they missed it’s pretty reasonable at $15 per session.

Now I like George. As I have said before, he is one of the brilliant minds of the Web hosting industry. I just think he is overlooking a few things.

Ok, I do realize that it is a big load of CDs you would be getting. If the price can’t be lowered though, how about giving us a few “Hostingcon bundles” to check out? Give me three or four CDs grouped together, and set the price under $100.

I want to look out for the Web host out there that couldn’t afford to go to Hostingcon – but still wants to learn something from the experience. I realize that profits have to be made, but cutting a few people a little slack should not hurt the bottom dollar.

Hosting Hoopla – Simple View

shoop.gifWell here is another feature to Hosting Hoopla that I have been working on for a while now. Some people E-mailed me and told me that Hosting Hoopla was too complicated. I can see where they might be coming from with that, so I have created Simple Hoopla!

This new view will give you a single column aggregated resource of the latest Web hosting news and links from a variety of different Web sites. This time though they are all blended together.

As usual, I’ll proably get ignored by the big Web 2.0 blog watchers – but as long as I made a few folks happy, that is good enough for me.

Best Blogging Advice

I have noticed more places and people mentioning how to make your blogging habits better. Sure, we all need help from time to time – but I have noticed something. I always seem to do my best writing when I toss the rules to the side, open up NoteTab Pro and just start to “go” from whatever is on my mind at the time.

Try not to get yourself too stress out over making a comment about everything. A lot of folks just want to jump on everybody’s bandwaggon and add that, “Yeah, me too!” to the conversation. I want to read something that either informs me or entertains me. Before you make that next post on your blog, ask yourself if you are doing either one of those first.

For more tips and help check out the post Chris made a few days ago about eliminating the echo chamber. He lists a lot of things even I had not though about till I read it.

Hostingcon on CD – Too Expensive?

hostingcon2006.pngMaybe this is just the cheap white boy coming out in me, but I think that paying $300 for a “Complete Conference CD Set” of Hostingcon 2006 is a little nuts. I’m not even sure I would pony up that much cash to go to the conference in person – let alone to hear it all on CD.

Want a cheap alternative? Go check out the Web Hosting Show podcast. There is more free audio and interviews there than you can shake a stick at. I won’t even charge you a penny to go listen to them.

To cut the Hostingcon guys a little credit, it does look like they have uploaded a free podcast for everybody to enjoy.

Mega Man Addict

megaman.jpgThe entire Mega Man series is one that I grew up playing religiously. I am not sure if I can put my finger on exactly what in it is so addicting to me though. Maybe it is all the pits with spikes? Maybe it is that face to face with one of the bosses? Whatever it is, I recently got hooked again.

The other day I picked up Mega Man Powered Up for my PlayStation Portable. Now the “cuteness” of the game might make more than a few folks avoid it. If you can get beyond that though – there is a lot of fun to be had. Out of all the PSP games I have played thus far, Mega Man Powered Up is the best.

The best part about the game is the construction mode. Even when I have beat the game, there is still more fun to be had. I can create my own stages with the easy to use editor inside of the game. I really wish more games came with this feature.

Now I know I don’t give my thoughts on video games that much here. For what it is worth though, I suggest everybody who has a PSP to drop $20 and pick up this game.

How To Get Attention

attention.pngNow it is no secret that I write a lot of articles and posts on a lot of different topics. From web hosting to Firefox to even freeware files, I pretty much cover it all. One thing that gets on my nerves more than anything else is somebody ordering me to write something about them.

I recently got an E-mail that started something like this:

Hi, I saw that you reviewed *Insert Random Topic Here* the other day. I can’t belive you missed reviewing my product. I have been around five times as long, and I have gotten so many awards. Why are you ignoring me?

Remember what your mother said about catching more flies with honey than vinegar? It was true! You think I am going to bend over backwards to help out a person like that? I don’t think so. Now how should have that have gone?

Hi, I saw that your review of *Insert Random Topic Here* and I loved it. Since you gave it a try, I would love it if you try my product as well. I have won a few awards for it, so I do think you might like checking it out. Thanks for your time!

If you want people to give you attention, try not to come off as an egotisical jerk.
