I did some editing and style changing on my personal Web site, MitchKeeler.com. It has gone through many different versions, but I think this one finally finds the right balance of giving you information about me and directing you to my various different projects.
Dear Netscape – Pay Me All You Want!
So Jason Calacanis of the new Netscape actually wants to pay folks for finding stories. I say good for him. People need to make money, and as somebody who earns a living off of what he makes from the Internet, I like seeing this type of system work. I don’t know one person who could honestly say he would turn down money for just sitting around and finding links on the Web. Eric Rice has it right.
Now where I see a problem to this idea of stealing away the top Digg users is that I don’t go to Digg to go see what top poster number one through five is posting. I go to Digg because I want to see what is on Digg. Five guys leave, five guys come in to take their places. I think if Netscape really wants to win, they are going to have to take a look at Digg and do whatever Digg isn’t able to do right now. Don’t steal ideas, make ideas.
So to sum things up, getting paid is good. Stealing “talent” and ideas? Well, that one seems a little sleazy.
Are Archives Dead?
Recently when I was looking through some WordPress plugins for making a better looking archive Web page, something hit me. After realizing somebody swatted me in the back of the head, I thought, “When was the last time I used archive links?”. I couldn’t come up with a date and time, but I know it has been many moons past.
So what do we do these days if we don’t use archive Web pages? Can we exist without the Web page listing everything by date? I think we can. I think (thanks to Google) we use search a replacement for archives. If I want to go see something I talked about on the Web Hosting Show wrote 3 months ago, I don’t go digging through my archives. I search for the subject, and I get a result.
So you tell me, are archives really dead? Should somebody reinvent the way we view our past? Give me your thoughts.
Mitch’s Must Have WordPress Plugins
Need a few WordPress plugin suggestions? Well I might be able to say a few nice things about a few of them. To tell you the truth, these have been the icing on the cake when it comes to moving my Web site over from other services.
+ Askimet
Askimet has pretty much killed everything it should have and plays nice with all my other stuff. Comparing my old Blogware 100 or more trackback and comment spam (a day/per blog) I got with this is like comparing apples to oranges. Askimet has at least saved me 20 minutes or more a day from deleting trackback spam to doing more important things.
+ Audio Player WordPress plugin
This is the perfect addition to any podcast’s Web site. I used this most of all on the Web Hosting Show’s new layout, but it might have to make an appearance on some of my other projects as well. Adding a player is as easy as typing in a few keystrokes into a post.
This Plugin really helped me when it came to moving my Web sites from Blogware to WordPress. I love using FeedBurner, and didn’t want to give it up. The FeedBurner Plugin just needs a little setup and then you don’t have to worry about it ever again. I like that.
Want to add a contact form to your WordPress Web site? This is the tool for you. All you need to do is configure, then cut and paste a little code in, and you are done.
There are many more great WordPress plugins that I didn’t mention as well. All and all, I have to say I am becoming happier and happier with my new WordPress setups.
My Deal With Hostaga
Some of you have asked about the new Hostaga image and link on the Web site. Well, since the route of sponsorship (or as I like to call it “supporter”) worked so well for the Web Hosting Show, I figured I would try it out here. I’ve known the owner, Tris, for some time now, and I know he runs a tight ship.
So how has the experiance been so far? I have to say I have been more than impressed. They might be a little smaller than your average Web hosting company, but that isn’t always a bad thing.
So if you are looking for a good Web hosting deal, you might give them a shot.
New Domain, Same Great Mitch Taste
Well I finally pulled the plug on Blogware and moved things over to Mitchelaneous.com. Hopefully I will be able to get all my Blogware stuff canceled soon so I can focus more on creating content and less on managing the backend. Blogware hasn’t been too bad of a service, I think I just out grew them. I needed more and they just couldn’t get it to me.
My RSS feed will stay the same, only the main URL is changing here. So make sure you update your bookmarks to my new blogging home Mitchelaneous.com. Leave me a comment and tell me what you think!
Blogging Limbo
Well, right now the whole Mitchelaneous Web page (http://mitch.lockergnome.net) is sort of in limbo. I wanted to be able to move the blogging from Blogware over to my own server space running WordPress, but I’ve hit a rock and a hard place. Right now I am waiting to get the thumbs up or thumbs down on if I can do it.
If I can’t do it, then I am stuck with either staying on Blogware and keeping all my search result ranking in place or moving to a better system and having to change my domain name. I do own Mitchelaneous.com, so if all else fails I could use that.
In other Blogware waiting news, I am also still waiting for them to cancel the account I had for the Web Hosting Show there. I sent in the request last Thursday to have it cancelled and still haven’t heard anything yet.
Update: Well, I just got my most recent reply to Blogware’s support system bounced back to me. Seems like they really don’t want me to cancel my old Web Hosting Show account.
Backordering Expired Domain Names – Podcast 69
So is backordering a domain name and waiting for it to expire really worth all the trouble? It seems like you are tossing your money in before you get the goods to me, but I decided to do my homework and see what I could find out about it. Come explore the world of backordering expired domain name with me! The Web Hosting Show, podcast 69, is now on the air.
Project Updates
I figured while I had the time, I would update everybody on some of my various projects:
Well, as soon as I can get the hosting space set up and sweet talk Chris into redirecting mitch.lockergnome.net to the new hosting space, I’ll be ready to start the move to WordPress. I am really excited to get this going, because I have found a great new supporter and sponsor for this space right here. I will give you more on that once the move is done.
+ The Web Hosting Show – My Podcast
Right now I am just trying my best to get the Web site back to normal after the move from Blogware to WordPress. I have gotten most of the archives fixed up and hopefully (get a month posts edited each day) I should be at 100 percent by this time next week. The Web site already looks 100 times better than it did, so if you haven’t checked it out in a while or listened to my show, what are you waiting for?
+ Firefox Facts – Firefox Tips and Tricks
Firefox Facts (both the Web site and the free eBook) have been my best success of the year. Thanks to the support from Lockergnome and others it has really taken off. We are getting more downloads and readers on a daily basis, so that is cool.
+ Hosting Hoopla – Hosting News and Links
I think I have done all I can do with Hosting Hoopla for the time being. It (for the most part) takes care of itself. Since it is aggregating data from all over the Web on “web hosting” I don’t have to worry about updating it by hand so much. The only thing I need for Hosting Hoopla is eye balls.
+ Mitch’s Midgets – My Side Projects
I haven’t really had much time to work on side projects as of late. Once I get all my other Web sites straight, I’ll be sure to update this a little more often. Once again, I just need some eye balls here as well.
