Well I found that somebody a little higher up at Blogware as commented on this issue over at Chris’s blog.
Hi Chris, Kim Phelan, product manager from Blogware here.
I’d love to tell you all that we have a new system that blocks trackbacks, but…we had a human adding to the trackback list over the holidays to get rid of a large number of bad trackbacks and they were overzealous.
We are conducting some cleanups at this point to make sure that blogware hosted blogs are not blocked (I suspect it will be sorted in the next day or so), but if you notice any please notify your retailer and we will make sure it gets rectified. Sorry for the confusion :(. My mantra today is “the road to hell is paved by good intentions”
As for the new trackback system, that is due in February, and details will be shared through documentation and release notes. It won’t be shocking or inaccurate like our humans…
Now knowing that, I have a few more questions than I have answers. I was told this by the Blogware support person I’ve been in contact with during this entire problem.
The blocking lists are system wide (all of Blogware). I have also asked for an investigation as to why these sites have been blocked. I’ve been told that they accept complaints from Blogware resellers and then confirm them prior to listing, however I am questioning the procedure due to these recent blocks.
Now if I had notified my retailer (Lockergnome.net aka Chris Pirillo himself) he wouldn’t have known anything more about the problem that I did. I had to E-mail Blogware’s support team directly to get an answer and a fix to the problem. What we need is a public list of the Web sites that are being blocked, so we can make sure we are not on it. We need a public list to see if people we know are on it. What is the purpose in not telling us who you are blocking? What if somebody gets “blocking happy” again without “confirming” before blocking?
There are still a lot more questions here than answers.

Well the cat is out of the bag, so I’ll go ahead and spill all that I know about the Blogware linking problems. I first started noticing that all my trackback links were disappearing inside my Blogware control panel for both my blog and the Web Hosting Show’s Web site. The one that I remembered most was being mentioned on Blogebrity, so I checked there first. Then I was told that Blogebrity was blocked across Blogware because of user complaints of trackback spam. This is the exact message I got from Blogware support:
Apparently Blogebrity.com is blocked from linking to all of Blogware hosted sites due to spamming complaints (trackback and/or comment spam) by Blogware customers. I’m working with Tucows to try and get the block removed.
Blogware has now removed Blogebrity.com from the filtering list. I think I deserve to be a C-List blogger for that at least! The problems don’t stop there though. Blogware was also blocking me from linking to myself. All trackbacks between this Web site and my podcast were being blocked because they thought it was trackback spam. That has been fixed as well after I asked them to remove the blocks there as well.
Chris seems to be having problems as well. So is Nick Bradbury. I’ve never been in more elite company!
Now the newest area where I am having problems is them blocking Lockergnome via the Web Hosting Show’s Web site. I usually write an article every Monday that has something to do with the podcast and post it to Lockergnome. Well, right now Blogware is blocking Lockergnome’s Web Developer channel from linking to the Web Hosting Show.
There is hope though. The support person I have been talking with has been fairly helpful. This was the last response I got from him:
The blocking lists are system wide (all of Blogware). I’ve gotten them to remove Blogebrity.com and I just requested lockergnome.com as well. I have also asked for an investigation as to why these sites have been blocked. I’ve been told that they accept complaints from Blogware resellers and then confirm them prior to listing, however I am questioning the procedure due to these recent blocks.
I sure hope change is coming. It is a pain in the butt to try to remember every Web site that has ever linked to me to see if they are blocked or not from doing so again.

In search of bringing you new and exciting content week after week, I’ve decided to change things up a little ‘bit by brining in a monthly theme. To help us ring in the new year, domains will be the first thing we’ll cover on the Web Hosting Show in 2006.
Each Thursday in January will be packed full of informative podcasts on and about the subjects of domains. How do you pick a good domain name? Where is the best place to get a domain name? Are there any domain name secrets or tricks of the trade? By the end of the month, you should know all there is to know about domain names.
So make sure you either subscribe to the RSS feed or keep coming back to WebHostingShow.com all month long!

It’s that time of the month again, the time of the month where I get to look forward to seeing what great Web sites the folks over at WHM have given an editors’ choice award to. The winners for January 2006 are…
For Specialty Hosting Services:
DailyRazor.com
For Dedicated Server Hosting Services:
Peer 1 Dedicated Hosting
For Technical Services:
CentralOps.net
For Multiple Services:
Register.com
For FrontPage Hosting Services:
FrontPage Web Hosting Network
For Software:
X Cent - xcInfoBase
Congrats to all the winners this month! It might be a little late to do this now, but I’d like to see WHM do a yearly set of awards as well. They could set up all the past award winners up as contenders and go on from there. Then again, maybe I just want another award myself.

Now with the holidays behind me, I can get back to doing what I do best, tackling the wild and wacky world of Web hosting week after week. The first Web hosting podcast of 2006 is now up and running over at WebHostingShow.com. What was the latest and greatest news from the hosting world this week?
BrowseHosts.com, an interactive pay-per-click web hosting directory and community forum, announced today that it is offering new advertisers a $15 bonus on pay-per-click listings. The company is also celebrating a milestone on its network of showing more than 1 million pay-per-click listing impressions each month.
BrowseHosts offers a great service out there to the Web hosting world. I can say from experience that Pinny and the gang know what they are doing, and you can see some real results by signing up either as an advertiser with them or as an ad displayer. They don’t give you the punch the monkey win an iPod junk. They give you real links back to real Web hosting companies. If your interested, sign up today!
Interland, a leading provider of websites and online services for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), today announced that it has completed its asset acquisition from Web Internet, LLC and Web Service Company Inc. Included in the assets are the domain name Web.com, web hosting business comprised of approximately 9,000 subscribers, accredited registrar business and trademark rights.
Interland paid $4.8 million in cash for all of this stuff, and I just hope that they really do something with it. Sure, a domain name can take you a long way, but you also need some content and services worth sticking around for once that deal is done.
Web hosting provider 1 and 1 Internet announced on Monday that it would again increase the standards features of its Web hosting packages while maintaining current price points. The move, part of a valu-added campaign kicked off in September, comes just weeks after the company upgraded the same plans, again without a corresponding increase in prices.
1 and 1 really does seem to be picking up steam in the world of Web hosting. I think in the past few weeks they might have even broken GoDaddy’s record of the number of times I’ve mentioned them on this show. You can’t go wrong when you offer your customers a better deal, so my two freaky thumbs up this week go up for 1 and 1.
