Hosting Hearsay for Today

It is time once again to get caught up with some of the latest Web hosting news from around the globe. The Web Hosting Show, podcast 46 has officially hit the air. Other than your usual hosting headlines, we also discussed on this week’s show server side includes, GoDaddy being a winer and a loser and much more. As always though, here is a taste of what is going on in the Web hosting industry this week.

HostMySite.com, a leading Web hosting provider for small and medium-sized businesses, today announced it has attained Gold Certified status in the Microsoft Partner Program with a competency in Networking Infrastructure Solutions and Advanced Infrastructure Solutions, recognizing HostMySite.com’s expertise and total impact in the technology marketplace.

So what is this whole “gold certification” thing? Well, it show they demonstrated expertise with Microsoft technologies and proven ability to meet customers’ needs. Microsoft Gold Certified Partners receive a rich set of benefits, including access, training and support, giving them a competitive advantage in the marketplace.

In today’s competitive web hosting market, the consumer is more knowledgeable and less afraid of switching web hosting companies. HostMove allows website owners to feel comfortable switching hosting companies. HostChart has found that most people using its directory already have websites but are unhappy with their current hosting provider or plan.

I can’t tell you how well it works, because I haven’t seen the service in action. I can say however that I hope it does work, because moving between Web host to Web host can really be a big pain in your data center.

Internet security giant VeriSign announced on Tuesday it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Seattle-based online analysis application developer CallVision.

Sorry for the vocabulary lesson during the news today. CallVision will allow VeriSign to deliver converged electronic bill presentation, payment and customer self-care applications to mobile operators, tier 1 carriers, broadband companies and consumer-brand mobile virtual network operators worldwide.

Also, don’t forget that you have a chance to win a free Web hosting account, a free domain name and $50 credit from BrowseHosts.com. Check out the Web Hosting Show’s Web site for more details!

Last week I talked to you about picking the perfect domain name, now this week I am going to teach you how to shop for that domain name in the wide market of choices you have available. There are a few things you should keep in consideration and a few questions you should ask yourself as you shop.

Web Hosting Podcast Turns One Year Old

On February 13, 2006 the self proclaimed one and only voice of the Web hosting world, the Web Hosting Show will turn one year old. With the also self proclaimed media rock star of the Web hosting industry at the helm, Mitch Keeler, the Web Hosting Show has grown to become a cult favorite inside and outside of Web hosting circles around the world. To ring in the one year celebration, Drift 2 Hosting (http://www.drift2.com) has donated a free domain name and Web hosting account into the mix to be given away on the anniversary date.

The Web Hosting Show is a weekly podcast. For those not familiar with the term, a podcast is a way of publishing files (usually audio or video) to the Internet, allowing users to subscribe to an RSS feed or visit the Web site manually to get new content. “Something like this would have never made it on traditional radio, but thanks to podcasting a niche audience gets content they are interested in.” Mitch says about distribution of his show. Late in 2005, the Web Hosting Show’s content was picked to become a part of the lineup on CoolCast Radio (http://www.coolcastradio.com). Also last year, the Web Hosting Show was named the best Web hosting industry related service for the month of September 2005 by the Web Host Magazine and Buyers Guide (http://www.webhostmagazine.com).

“I couldn’t have reached the one year mark without the Web Hosting Show’s fans and supporters. Without the help of Web Hosting Chat (http://www.webhostingchat.com), I doubt I could have even gotten this idea off the ground. Nearly everyone I’ve met over the past year has wanted to help the show out in one way or another, so I don’t see it being killed off any time soon.” says Mitch while looking back at what has made the podcast a success.

As far as the giveaway in conjunction with Drift 2 Hosting, Mitch says he wants the Web Hosting Show fans to simply drop him an E-mail and tell him why they need the one year of free web hosting and the domain name that goes along with it. “Since day one I’ve wanted to help folks both inside and outside of the usual Web hosting circles, so if anybody needs the hosting just drop me an E-mail at mitch@mitchkeeler.com!” Mitch says. As the date draws closer, Mitch hopes to have a few more surprises lined up for the big show.

The Web Hosting Show’s one year anniversary will also be the fiftieth hosting podcast that has been produced by Mitch Keeler. As the executive producer and host of the weekly podcast, Mitch say that he is looking forward to the future of the show the most and bringing in as many listeners as he can. HostingCon 2006, Hosting Industry Podcast

It is time once again to gather the family around the podcast player of your choosing, sit down and enjoy the latest and greatest the Web hosting industry has to offer via the Web Hosting Show yet again. It’s Monday morning, so that means I have a few of the most important news and headlines from the wild and wacky world of Web hosting to share with you.

Hosting.com has announced the acquisition of a 36,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art data center facility in Southern California. The facility is located in Irvine, Ca. and will offer managed collocation hosting solutions and provide additional redundancy to Hosting.com’s global customer base.

It never hurts to expand your Web hosting business. Hosting.com is one of the biggest dogs in the fight, and so they can afford to have data centers all over the globe. This is good news for Hosting.com customers and bad news for every other Web host out there.

DirectI, a leading Web Services Company and one of the fastest growing ICANN Accredited Domain Registrars, recently announced the sale of .INFO domain names, at an unbelievable price of $1.49 for a year. The new promotional price, effective from December 31st 2005, will be available up to June 30, 2006.

This has to be the cheapest price I have seen for the .info domain name. However, I don’t ever really see too many .info Web sites making that much buzz. The only one I can think of that I visit that often would be WebHosting.info. Hopefully with this price drop, a few more .info domains will be getting my attention.

Following the success of the inaugural HostingCon in June 2005, several industry leaders have signed on to sponsor the upcoming HostingCon 2006. HostingCon 2006 is the leading conference and trade show focused on the hosting industry and will take place July 17-19, 2006 at The Mirage Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The more folks you can get behind you, the better off you will be. I am happy to see that HostingCon 2006 is looking to be the be all and end all Web hosting event of the year. Now if I can only talk George Roberts into bringing the Web Hosting Show into the media fold for the event, I’d be one happy hosting guru.

Be sure to check out the rest of this week’s podcast to get more Web hosting news, information help and more. This week and this week only, I can also promise you that you will get my personal views on Web hosting for the undead.

HostingViews.com Hiring Writers!

If you ever wanted to see your name in print some place, look no further than HostingViews.com! Right now they are looking for a few good men (and women) to do some Web hosting article writing. You’ll get “by line” credit on all your work, and it is a great way of getting yourself known out there. Before I started at Lockergnome, this was the way I got my own name out there inside and out of the Web hosting world, so I can tell you it does work.

Finding the Perfect Domain

There are a lot of aspects that come into play when you talk about domain names. What are the best ones out there? How do you know which one is right for you? How should you shop for one? Well over the next four weeks, I hope to answer a lot of your questions every single Thursday right here on the Web Hosting Show. As part one of this four part podcast series, I thought I’d talk about picking the perfect domain name.

So how do you pick the perfect domain name of your dreams? Well a lot of that has to do with what you want your Web site to be about. Some people might argue with me on this point, but I am a big believer in having keywords in your domain name. Keywords that are associated with the idea behind the Web site.

For example, lets look at WebHostingChat.com. When you read that domain, you already know what you should be getting. You have already been told that the subject is Web hosting and it is some sort of chat. Now chat is one of those words that could mean a lot of things. It could mean a chat room. It could mean discussions. In this case, it is referring to the fact that WebHostingChat.com is a set of forums about the Web hosting world.

Now lets say the domain name for WebHostingChat.com was FunkyForumsR.us. At the domain name, you would already be confused as to the reason or purpose of the Web site being up. With that domain, you would expect some odd things happening. Not a bunch of hosting gurus talking about the hosting industry.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Stay away from hyphenated domain names. Sure, some search engines might like them more because it makes your keywords a little easier to see. As far as human use goes, it doesn’t make it very user friendly. So if you can stay away from it, please do so.

Another idea that you might want to keep in consideration when you are domain name shopping is buying out your domain name with the word “sucks” after it. Why would you want to do that? You would want to buy it out to keep it from falling into the hands of somebody who doesn’t like you very much.

So that is it for your first of four lessons from the Web Hosting Show. If you have any questions, or you’d like to tell me what you think drop me an E-mail at mitch@mitchkeeler.com. Next Thursday we will be talking about how to shop for a domain name. Till then, may your hosting be happy and your account stay running.
