Content is Key to Web Site Success

No matter how flashy or great your Web site looks, if you don’t have good content you are in a boat without a paddle. I can not count the times that I have said that content is key to a Web site’s success. Too many times to count. There are other things you should know about your Web site’s content though that you may have not thought about before.

Rule number one is to keep your content easy to read. When folks are reading things Online, they don’t like to scan through huge paragraphs of information. Instead, try to cut your paragraphs up into smaller sections. This makes it easier for the Web site visitor to read through all that you have to say.

The second thing to remember is to make every single word count on your Web page. Don’t fill your Web site with a lot of fluff and hardly any substance at all. The one reason why people visit a Web site is to get information. Where is your information? If somebody has to ask that about you, then you might worry more about adding more content and less about other things on the Web site.

The third thing to get down is that spell checker is your best friend. As a writer, you’d probably expect that I have a great mastery of the human language. Not so. The funny thing is that I love to write, but I am the world’s worst speller. That is when your friend and mine, the spell checker comes into play. Now I no longer have to sound like a total idiot when I am writing about something I feel strongly about. Well, okay I might still sound like an idiot from time to time. As least I spelled it right though.

Write with passion. It is fairly easy to tell when somebody is writing about something they have no clue about. Make sure you cover your topics and interests in the Web pages completely. If you are working on a rather dull Web site, then find a way of making it’s content less dull. After writing it, you should be able to sit back, relax and admire your work. If you feel more like that you are making a mistake than having a job well done, then do it again. Practice makes perfect.

Another topic is I want you to remember is that nobody likes to have to scroll across the page horizontally to read your Web site’s content. Horizonal scrolling on a Web page is a big problem. many folks get turned off by a Web site if they have to move their mouse left and right to get what you are trying to say. Make sure you test your Web site’s layout at a few different resolutions to make sure you are not forcing folks to scroll horizontally to get the information that you have posted.

Other than that, it is up to speculation. If you ever have a problem, there are lots of second hand stores out there that will sell you old school English books for you to do some studying on. Yes, those years and years of English in school will finally pay off. As you might guessed, I wasn’t a very good English student either. I have learned more though out of school than I ever learned in it though.

Last but not least, any good writer will tell you to read more if you want to write more. The more you read of other folks work, the better your own work will become. The reason is you start to develop your own style and content in your own way. You can pick and choose from different methods, and you will become a better writer.

So remember, that your Web site is only as good as the content that is in it.

Web Hosting Comics?

Just to show you that not all my ideas are good ideas, I at one time thought about doing a weekly comic strip dedicated to those in the Web hosting business. This was due to some inspiration by the old Phil, the IT guy comics that Matt used to do.

Then I came to the realization that I just couldn’t come up with that many funny topics to cover. Sure, the world of Web hosting has it’s wackiness. Just don’t know if I could deliver that in a way that could be funny to the folks both outside and inside the Web hosting world.

Who know though, maybe I’ll end up doing it sometime. Right now it just isn’t at the top of my list of things to do.

More AutoLink Discussion

Personally I have just about given up on efforts to keep AutoLink from creeping slowly into our lives, changing our content and causing more problems than it would ever solve. My mindset is that Google is going to do what they want to do if you like it or not. Do I like it? No. Will I have to learn to live with it? Probably so. Thankfully though, there are some folks out there who have made living with it a much better option now.

I noticed this comment left on my blog a few days ago from John Magnus:

I’ve written a rather lengthy rant about this issue on my blog that you or (your readers) might be interested in. Although it raises few points that haven’t been voiced elsewhere (such as your longer post on the issue), I’ve also posted a script that removes the malarkey (and fixes a couple of issues with the script that’s currently “floating” around.). Also some info on what’s being modified and how to “capture” it…

You can find the article and fixes he speaks of over at his own Web site. I do have to say it is worth reading and checking out.

On the humorous side of the debate, the folks at Better Bad News have put up a very funny 12 minute video discussing Google’s new AutoLink feature. If you feel like fighting the good fight, make sure you go sign the Opt Out Petition and let Google hear your voice on the matter.

Show Update, Good News and Bad

The latest edition of the Web Hosting Show is up, and it is up one day early! The reason? I think I have finally caught the cold that has been going around here lately. I figured while I was feeling good enough to do so, I should go ahead and get it posted. I’m just lucky I got most of it recorded last Thursday or you’d be hearing a lot more hacking and wheezing going on. So the good news is the Web Hosting Show is up, the bad news is I’m sick.

Video Game Kick

I’ve been on a video game kick for the last few days. Not just with my own personal time, but with my writing time as well. Check out some of these latest articles I just posted for Lockergnome’s Game Invasion.

Tekken 5, Worth Your Time?

I have played a lot of video games in my day, but not till just recently had I ever played one of the Tekken games. Well, let me take that back, I think I played the first Tekken game back in the arcades many moons ago. Never the less, I had never played one at home and never played one after that. So when I heard that Tekken 5 came out it was about time to give the game a chance. You see I was raised with Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter. When I was growing up, if you played anything else you were a “traitor” to your favorite game. Now that phase of gaming history is over I can give a fair review of Tekken 5, without the worry of a lynch mob coming to beat me with a sack of oranges.

Punish the Game Makers?

There is a bill in the House of Representatives that says that the video game creators should be held liable if somebody under 17 years old commits a crime because he played it on a video game. Now we do already live in a society that likes to pass the buck when it comes to taking responsibility, but does anybody really believe this is the answer?

New Video Game Rating

There is a new family member in the Entertainment Software Ratings Board! The new rating will be known as “E10+” and is for everybody ten years and older. This makes a lot of sense. There are some games out there I wouldn’t want my six year old nephew playing just yet, but I wouldn’t want to make it just a “Teen” rated game either. This creates a nice middle point between those two genres.

Another Sims 2 Expansion Pack

With the The Sims 2: University expansion pack just out of production, the team at the Sims 2 are already working on another way to start taking more of your money. We all know our little sims like to have fun right? Well, now they will have a night life as well. Oh great, now my sim is going to have a drug problem and be up all night racing cars! Will the next expansion pack be, The Sims 2: Rehab Clinic?

Also, I just posted a full preview of what you can expect to see on next week’s edition of the Web Hosting Show! Check it out and let me know if there is anything else you’d like me to cover on next Monday’s show!

News Points

I am a little stretched for time today, so instead of just writing about one topic or one thought bouncing around in my head I figured I would touch upon a few instead. Just think of it as more bang for your buck, well that is if you were paying for my services. Sound a little dirty? Well with the new AutoLink problems that might not be such a far off idea. Could we someday be living in a world where you have commercialized Web content one side, then “premium” Web content you pay to read that has no advertisements or “false advertising links” at all? I think it could, but we are still a ways off.

If Google wants to come up with a quick and easy solution to the AutoLink problem, I have it. Just create an opt-out list of Web sites that do not wish to have their content changed no mater what browser comes to it. Then every time somebody wants to use the feature, just have the toolbar contact home base and ask if the Web site they are wanting to AutoLink on is on the list. It is just that easy. These days though, it seems like more people are willing to innovate for the user rather than the provider.

Yahoo will have their 10th birthday tomorrow. That just makes me feel like an old man! Then again, I guess that would make me 12 years old when they started. Maybe I’m not so old after all.

The newest episode of The Web Hosting Show is up and running. I have to say that show number three was my favorite so far of the five that I have done. By now I figured I would have ran out of things to talk about, but I’m happy the wild and wacky world of Web hosting has been ripe with information these days.

The book previously known as “The Web Hosting Book” and now known as “Lockergnome’s Guide to Web Hosting” is now out as well. Have you picked up your copy?

I ordered Tekken 5 over the weekend, and it should be getting here today. I haven’t really been a big Tekken fan over the years. I was raised in the generation of Mortal Kombat fans fighting Street Fighter fans. Oh the good old days. Does anybody else remember the old battles that Super Nintendo fans and Sega Genesis fans used to have? It used to be like a religion, now if you don’t have more than one system then you are lame.. or a poor Internet columnist and author who writes about Web hosting. Not like I would mention any names though.

Well that is it for today. Make sure you mark your calendars and listen to The Chris Pirillo Show this Thursday. You might hear an update from a surprise contributor on the show.
